47. Homeschooling with Music May 17, 2023

Listen in today as we chat about incorporating music into your homeschooling - instruments, voice, dance, musical theater, music in unit studies, music during chore time, music to help with mental health, music for memorization, studying different genres of music, music throughout the world, artists, and so many other ways to incorporate music into learning and to reap the benefits of incorporating music into your lives.

Learning through music doesn’t have to be expensive. You may be able to swap with a musically-inclined parent, attend local contra dances as a family, have older homeschoolers teach an instrument or dance, or find low-cost ways to learn through community resources or churches.

Even the littlest kids can make musical instruments out of recyclables and learn about rhythm and beat, and can learn their address, days of the week, and how to spell their name easily when set to music.

46. Benefits of Serving Others and Volunteering as a Homeschooler May 10, 2023

On today’s episode, Beth & Emma are talking about having a heart for service. Kids can learn so much through serving others - those they know and those they don’t know and may never meet.

Kids of all ages can participate in various service opportunities including making blessing bags to keep in the car, packing food at a Feed My Starving Children MobilePack, volunteering at church, working at the food bank, helping at Project Birthday Bag, or volunteering with kids, veterans, the elderly, or animals.

In addition to community service projects, kids can learn so much by serving others in their own home, helping to make food for new moms or when someone passes away, helping clean a friend’s house, or keeping kids company so their mom can have a break.

We’re chatting about the benefits of raising kids who serve (and who become adults who serve), and why it’s important in our lives. We also share how we’ve been on both the giving and the receiving ends of service and how it impacted us - even if it means having green bananas for years.

44. Finding Mentors for Your Homeschooler Apr 26, 2023

Join us on this episode as we talk about mentors in homeschooling - we’re including info about mentors for our kids as well as mentors for us as homeschool parents.

People often worry about their homeschool child learning only from them. However, we share the many ways our kids have had good, healthy mentors in their lives.

As homeschool parents, it’s also helpful to us to have others who have “been there, done that,” whether referring to homeschooling high school or having a child with special needs or dealing with a rough situation. It’s helpful to have other parents to bounce ideas off of, to gain perspective on our parenting/homeschooling, and just to commiserate with us or encourage us on our journey.

42. Teaching Together: Combining Multiple Ages in Homeschooling Apr 12, 2023

On today’s episode we are chatting about how we’ve combined multiple ages in our homeschooling in order to teach our kids together instead of separating them all by ages or grades to do their own things. We’re sharing some easy ways that we’ve combined social studies, science, novel studies/literature, etc., and how that gave us extra time in our schedules since we weren’t having to try to find time to teach each child every subject separately.

Teaching to the older kids and allowing the younger kids to pick up knowledge is one of the ways we’ve accomplished multiple age-homeschooling. We share some ways we’ve kept it hands-on so the kids all stay engaged and learning together as a family unit.

We also include tips to keep your younger kids busy during those times that you do need to work individually on math or another advanced concept with an older kid.

There are also many benefits to having the kids learn together with kids of all ages. Don’t shy away from the opportunity of having your three-year-old pipe in with the correct answer of “endoplasmic reticulum!”
