Ahhhhhhhh, curriculum!!!!! This is one of the biggest stressors for new homeschoolers. Is there a perfect curriculum? Is an all-in-one curriculum the best? Should I just choose a curriculum and make my child do it? What do I do if the curriculum we chose isn’t working? Hear Emma’s & Beth’s perspectives in today’s podcast.

Spoiler alert, for some subjects, we didn’t even use a specific curriculum!

We’ll also be talking about various choices of curricula that have worked (or not) for our kids, and some of their favorites.

We’ll also tell you why the curriculum you use is NOT the most important part of homeschooling.

7. Homeschooling Through Major Life Changes Jun 01, 2022

Babies, job changes, divorce, moving, death/illness in the family, and even a burglary - in today’s episode, Emma & Beth are talking about big life changes and how they’ve been able to successfully homeschool through the death of Emma’s mom and through Beth’s divorce, among other things.

Life can be very challenging, and changes (even wonderful ones like a new baby) can throw off your family’s rhythm. Changes, however, don’t mean you have to put your child in public school while life happens. Instead, you can find ways to support your child during stressful, sad, and even joyful times while homeschooling and keeping them close as you help them learn to cope with big life changes, and while you support each other as a family.

Homeschooling is more about life and learning, than it is about the bookwork.

6. The World is our Homeschool Classroom May 04, 2022

In this episode, Emma & Beth are talking about learning outside of a textbook using unit studies, hands-on experiences, and out-of-the-box thinking.

We’re sharing ideas for a geology study and a country study, and some life skills ideas for all ages. We also talk about how Emma’s kids started earning flight hours and started learning to fly a small plane, and Beth’s opinion on Charles Ingalls.

5. How do you socialize your homeschool children? Apr 27, 2022

In this episode, Emma & Beth are talking about the big socialization question. Do homeschool kids have friends? Do they know how to play with other kids? Do they stay home all day?

We’re chatting about the idea of socialization and what that really means (does it mean sitting with 30 kids of the same age in a class all day, or does it mean something else?), along with sharing lots of ways our kids have made friends with people of all ages.

We include some tips to help you along the way, and our kids’ favorite homeschool socialization video that has made us laugh for many years.

4. Do you have to do sit-down schoolwork all day when you’re homeschooling? Apr 20, 2022

Today we’re talking about whether homeschooling needs to look like public school at home. Homeschool kids can usually complete their schoolwork in a few hours compared to the seven hours in a public school day.

About how many hours a day do your homeschool kids need to spend on sit-down work/bookwork? Check out our handy chart for a basic idea of sit-down time and find lots of other ways to incorporate learning into your day.

In this episode, Emma and Beth also talk about block scheduling and schooling kids of multiple ages together.
