Great leaders are great coaches, and great coaches are curious. In this episode, we continue our conversation about the five principles of effective coaching and talk about three areas you can focus on in order to become more curious. We also walk through a framework for asking better questions about where a person is and where they are going.

    • Leadership is about unleashing the best in others (0:46)
    • When trying to influence and lead, motive matters (3:47)
    • Good coaches give answers to people, but great coaches extract answers from people (6:31)
    • To convey curiosity, focus on the tone you use, the questions you ask, and the way you listen (9:54)
    • Your tone can convey interest and invite people to share more (10:27)
    • Asking questions is key to curiosity (21:14)
    • We think asking questions is difficult and abnormal (22:13)
    • We don’t ask questions because we believe the gap between failure and success is information (25:23)
    • We avoid questions because we assume we understand (28:32)
    • Ask about where they’ve been, where they are, where they’re going, and what the path looks like (32:24)
    • The passive coach hears concepts, but the active coach listens to language (43:50)
