276 - How Shall We Love? (w/ Jamie Lee Finch & Propaganda) Jan 17, 2021
    Show notes

Love your neighbor, love your enemy. Jamie Lee Finch (the Liturgists) and Propaganda (Red Couch Podcast) discuss with Joey “loving others” in the context of people’s personal journeys, social media “venting,” and the ability or inability to humanize others. Should we respond to “ignorant hate” differently than how we respond to just straight up, ‘ol hate? Do some legitimately have a harder time loving because of their place in society and past experiences? And should we be cautious in using the word “should” when it comes to another person's ability to love well?

275 - God [Can’t or Won’t] Stop the Little Girl From Being Raped Jan 11, 2021
    Show notes

Does God need our prayers to help Him stop evil? If He can defeat evil without us, why doesn't he? Today's guests appear to have some concrete direction on making sense of the "problem of evil." But they go in two different directions. Oord proposes that God simply lacks the power to stop bad things from happening and needs our partnership to minimize the effects of evil. Chip believes that an all-powerful God has willfully given humanity dominion over this world and suggests that people possess a God-given duty of using the "weapon of prayer" to unleash God's power in order to stop evil.
So, is God innately limited? Or is He self-limited? Both outlooks are a bit unnerving.
Maybe, let's just stick with good old-fashion mystery.
Thomas Oord appeared on episode 209 to discuss his book on Open Theology, "God Can't." Unique and intriguing territory is covered in this follow-up conversation, discussing his follow-up book, "Questions and Answers for God Can't."

    274 - A Sermon From the Pastor (“Being a Kid in 2021”) Jan 02, 2021
    Show notes

If we accepted our place as kids, would our prayers sound a lot different? By the way, did you know the Apostle Paul’s prayers sound NOTHING like most of ours?

What if life was mainly for our enjoyment? What does it mean that God really wanted to spare us from the knowledge of good and evil?
Enjoy a sermon from your friendly, bald neighborhood pastor.

273 - Brian McLaren & His New Book "Faith After Doubt." Dec 30, 2020
    Show notes

Author, speaker, activist, former pastor, and friend to this podcast, Brian McLaren, just released his newest book “Faith After Doubt.” He submits to us that questions and doubt are not the enemies of faith, but rather a portal to a more mature and fruitful kind of faith. We also talk a bit about “Learning to See,” his new podcast with Fr. Richard Rohr and Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis.

    272 - A Merry-Less Christmas, Newly Widowed Dec 17, 2020
    Show notes

Grieving During the Holidays Part II (Part one, episode 208), Liz Miller joins Joey and Pricilla to talk through her dreadful first couple of holiday seasons without her husband of 6 years. What does that kind of suffering feel like? Liz explains that when you’re going through this sort of suffering, any future seasons of joy seem impossible. She shares some tips, including the need to offer grace in all directions. It’s typically uncharted territory to the sufferer as well as the loved ones around them who make mistakes, even saying hurtful things out of complete ignorance and with good intentions. Oh yeah, and don’t send Christmas cards to people like Liz. Give it a few years, for crying out loud. We talk about her late husband, laugh about some memories of him as we tribute to Joshua Miller and the short life him and Liz shared. Our hearts are with those who are experiencing this sort of grief and at the very least, know you are not alone. Team humanity, we love you, and may God be with you in your sadness.

271 - A Bible App for Progressive Christians (with Crystal Cheatum) Dec 13, 2020
    Show notes

Crystal Cheatum created a bible app that “ditches toxic theology and provides resources for marginalized communities of faith.” We learn a bit about her upbringing, discuss faith essentials and hear what theological positions cannot be represented by contributors to the bible studies and devotions on this app. Crystal is a gracious soul, honors others' journeys, and recognizes the impact a person's upbringing has on his or her religious outlook. Unlike a lot of the antagonistic approaches seen often these days, her posture bids well for more conservative theological thinkers to understand more progressive outlooks of God and the bible. The app is “Christo-Centric,” the majority of the included bible studies are written by ministers or seminarians, but people of all spiritual walks can find a home here. Crystal has a podcast and offers various workshops. She also shares a bit about the harm of purity culture and her experience of doing the Lords work as a Lesbian woman.

Her father, who she still has a relationship with her, is currently writing a book on how being gay is a sin. 1946 is a revolutionary new film that chronicles how the misuse of a single word changed the course of modern history. 269 - Conservative & Liberating View of Women in the Bible (w/ Marlo Schlalesky) Dec 03, 2020
    Show notes

Jared Svendsen, executive producer of the show and older brother of the host, stops by to discuss his recent conversion to Eastern Orthodoxy and why despite Joey’s liberal theology, he still sees his brother as a fellow Christian. Joey also shares a story on how Jared prayed over his little brother "in tongues" when they were teens.

Marlo Schalesky wrote Women of the Bible Speak Out, which is a study of twenty women in Scripture and how God responded to them walking through betrayal, abuse, endangerment, blame, and shame. Despite their circumstances and labels, this book highlights God’s healing and transforming power, calling these women to wholeness, new vision, and holiness. In light of her work in this book, we discuss whether the Bible was written for men and what the implications of that would be. Marlo also does NOT lean into more progressive interpretations of the Bible that would typically make the treatment of women in the Bible more palatable.

268 - My Dear Friend Who Happens to Be Fat Nov 26, 2020
    Show notes

First of all, kids say the darndest things.
[11:30 minute mark] Three kids belonging to some listeners of this podcast, as well as Joey’s son Waylon, kick us off to talk about the deeper things in life. We talk about how God is good in the context of tornadoes, some specific times their parents have cussed, how the devil is apparently stronger than God sometimes, whether Biden will make a good president, and whether or not they would be nervous to babysit baby Jesus. One of these kids is an open theist, none of them are quite sure whether skin is an essential organ, Waylon has lied to his dad recently and a couple of them think Cobain was killed by his wife. Oh, and the devil created robbers and cancer.
[50:00 minute mark] Secondly, Joey talks to his friend Amy Alderman and what it’s like to be obese. Amy has been told by some that “she’s liked despite her weight” and that “no one would take her serious as a speaker because of her weight.” She shares how people see “fat” as contagious, recounts how she feels judged at restaurants, and outlines the many stereotypes and assumptions people have about fat people. Joey admits to falling prey of these stereotypes and asks questions about "fat jokes."

267 - How Can God be Fully Man? (w/ Dr. Sam Youngs) Nov 16, 2020
    Show notes

At the top of this episode, John Mark McMillan, Robbie Madison and Joey Svendsen give some examples of miracles in their lives they are convinced was the result of God’s supernatural hand. Oh, and Joey doesn’t know what the “WAP” is and John Mark and Robbie are uncomfortable to disclose this on the air.
MAIN INTERVIEW:If Jesus is fully God, we should worship Him. If he is fully man, we’d be sinning to worship him. Fully man, fully God? How in the world does this work? There’s many verses pointing to the inferiority Jesus had with the Father (John 5:30, Matthew 24:36). But isn't Jesus fully God? In this episode, we slow down to process this with author of "The Way of the Kenotic Christ," Dr. Sam Youngs, and focus on the “fully man” part. What are the implications of Jesus “fully emptying himself" (Philippians 2:5-8)?
Dr. Young has author copies of his book available for $16 apiece. If you email him (sam@missionchattanooga.org), you can arrange to pay by Venmo and Dr. Young will send you a copy of the book. Quantities at this price are limited. If you'd prefer to purchase the book online, please visit either the publisher's page or you can buy it from Amazon.
