255 - My Son is Dead, My Faith Didn't Work Sep 28, 2020
    Show notes

Preview of upcoming episodes at the beginning of this show. (REBOOT) - This episode aired 2 years ago, I often refer to it as my favorite episode, one that represents perfectly what this podcast is all about and why I'm motivated to continue making episodes. Art Rash discusses the loss of his son a couple of years ago. Growing up in his Pentecostal faith resulted in his belief of universal protection and continual favor for him and God’s other kids. Standing on God’s promises guaranteed his provision and rescue to those who believe. But what does one’s faith in God’s provision mean, when He doesn’t provide nor rescue?

254 - Sarah Bessey and Our Modern Day Apocalypse Sep 21, 2020
    Show notes

Our guest today highlights the monumental changes the church undergoes every 500 years, and guess what, folks? It’s that time. Sarah Bessey is a best-selling author. She co-created and co-leads the conference and community of Evolving Faith and also is President of the Board for Heartline Ministries in Haiti. Sarah gives Joey, "guest co-host" Trisha Wilkerson, and all of our listeners reason to have great hope and joy during seasons of monumental shifts in our faith. We discuss the gift of ditching conservative and progressive fundamental Christianity for more important things like love, grace and kindness. She gives some guidance for parents who are raising kids while deconstructing, highlights the need for borrowing hope from others, and discusses another way of viewing the term “born again.” If you are going through spiritual deconstruction and maybe experiencing discomfort (or even fear) along the way, you are in for a treat.

253 - "Will There Be Sex in Heaven?" Episode Sep 14, 2020
    Show notes

So is there sexual activity in heaven? We hear from lots of contributors on this one. In the beginning all things were good. Food, work, companionship, all of creation, perfect connection with God, perfect beauty and I presume, perfect sex. Things got screwed up along the way, ruining everything; and most Christians believe Jesus will redeem “all things," enjoying them forever in a new, perfect world. Everything redeemed. Except sex. Hmmm. The only thing "off the table" is sex? That’s odd, right? It’s at least worth a discussion.
Regulars Ellen Mauro and Pastor Chip Judd, a couple of priests (Fr. Wesley Walker and Fr. Chris Foley), Craig Gross, Preston Sprinkle, and more. Even Joey’s wife, Pricilla, doesn’t get off the hook on this one. Or should we say, since Joey had to talk about his proposal of sex in heaven with multiple partners to Pricilla, JOEY doesn't get off the hook.

We've heard the stories, we've seen the signs, our jaws have dropped, our stomachs have turned. Why do they do what they do? How do they reconcile their actions with the teachings of Jesus? How do they claim to practice love? Jack Hoey III and Joey talk to one of the leaders of Westboro Baptist, Tim Phelps.

248-Interrogating and Respecting Atheism (w/ “The Friendly Atheist”) Aug 13, 2020
    Show notes

Hemant Mehta has a calling to open people’s eyes to the atrocities coming from the Christian church. As always, “The Friendly Atheist” is friendly, fair, insightful, eloquent in his observations and brings to the table many things to learn from. He points out the fallacy of Christians being persecuted under Democratic Presidents and makes a claim that most American stories of “Christian persecution” are skewed to fit the “every one is against Christians” narrative.
We talk about whether morality can exist outside of God, and Hemant argues that Christians themselves are subjective and selective in their assessment of “right and wrong.”
At the top of the episode, John Mark McMillan, Ellen Mauro, and Joey Svendsen speak about police officers and “weaponizing black voices.”

247 - Essentials of the Christian Faith. Who decides? Aug 03, 2020
    Show notes

My friend Pastor Colin Kerr wrote a book called “Faith Hope Love: The Essentials of Christianity for the Curious, Confused and Skeptical.” We talk about “essentials” in the context of denominations. Colin says, “A skeptic’s reasons for rejecting institutional Christianity might be, unbeknownst to them, more faithful to the nature of Kingdom Christianity than some claiming to be Christians themselves.” Bullseye. We talk a little about everything. Is it a win that many of these skeptics are leaving a misguided church? What does it mean for the bible to be authoritative? Is it fair to say love is more important than doctrine? This book is touted as concise in its content and interdenominational in its approach, a strong read for the curious, confused and/or skeptical.”
At the top of the episode, John Mark McMillan, Ellen Mauro and myself talk about the tenacity of John’s daughter, TikTok and having patience and love towards unlovable people.

246 - Sizing People Up With Love Jul 27, 2020
    Show notes

(Pastoring in an Evangelical church as a Non-Evangelical Part 3)
Continuing a mini-series (started with episodes 225 and 240), in this episode I reflect on my habit of categorizing people as good or bad, authentic or fake, honest or a liar. And my current desire to size people up with love and recognizing my hypocrisy when I don’t do this. I also talk out loud my thoughts (not always the best idea) concerning Pastors distinguishing themselves from their “flock” as “the superior one,” this leading to messes of all kinds. This line of thinking is also completely contradictory to the nature of humanity clearly seen in day to day life as well as in the bible.

245 - How Much Can We “Sway” God By Praying? Jul 21, 2020
    Show notes

Chip Judd and Jack Hoey, regulars on this podcast, have both been Christians for a long time and see prayer in very different lights. How much responsibility do we have to pray regularly and does God withhold blessings and provisions when we do not pray enough? Does God often communicate back to us? So many questions about prayer and we discuss many of them on this episode.
At the top of the episode, Joey, Ellen Mauro and John Mark McMillan continue their conversation about porn and today specifically we discuss how significant the difference is between seeing naked bodies and watching sexual acts. I also surveyed our listeners on their personal struggles with mental illness and share the results in the intro.

Song you heard: The Lost Chorus is a collaboration between Alex Albert (Project 86, drums), Ryan Dennee (Stavesacre, guitar), Dirk Lemmenes (Stavesacre, bass) and Andy Zipf (vocals, guitar). In 2009, Alberts, Dennee and Lemmenes wrote several instrumental songs in a rehearsal space outside of Los Angeles. They reached out to Zipf, who added melodies, lyrics and some additional guitar parts. This resulted in a self produced and self titled EP released in 2011. In 2019, new material began to take shape, and a series of singles produced and mixed by Paul Fig (Deftones, Ghost, Alice in Chains) are now in process. The first song from this series, “Soft Lies” was released June 26, 2020.Find the Lost Chorus where ever you listen to your tunes.
