    296 - Deconstruction Used to Be Called Back-Sliding (w/ Mason Mennanga) May 18, 2021
    Show notes

Joey processes his worship of comfort and how he believes more money would make him happier. Chip Judd, John Mark McMillan and Joey’s therapist chime in to surprisingly validate some of these sentiments.
Joey, with Podcaster and Theologian, Mason Mennanga, reflect on being fundamental church kids “back-sliding” into a new world of “secular music,” they discuss whether some Christians enjoy the thought of "bad people" going to hell and they both share how they view, interact with, and love fundamentalists who have confused Republicanism with the Kingdom of God.

295 - God Has Never Been Violent May 09, 2021
    Show notes

Are Old Testament stories allegorical? Is there really no chance of eternal torment? If a loving God exists (and every one on this episode believes this) what are the chances of dirt naps for all of us when we die? Was God never violent? Bible scholars, Pastor Heath Bradley and Mason Mennenga process and discuss, in a conversation that covers tons of intriguing questions.

    294 - I'm Gay and “in Fellowship” With Un-affirming Christians May 01, 2021
    Show notes

Last Sunday, for the Seacoast Church weekend message, Joey and Pricilla joined founding pastor Greg Surratt to tell their story of Joey’s mental health crisis (2019). Joey implores the church to humanize pastors and Pricilla shares some "do's" and don't's" when interacting with people who are struggling mentally. We kick this episode off, sharing this recording which includes audio from a "bumper video" Joey also helped in.

And for the “main event,” Joey’s friend Hunter Gregory is gay, relatively conservative in his faith and politics, and is “in fellowship” with Christians who are not in alignment with his sexuality. He shares why he does this and also where he draws the line.

293 - Christians Are Not Entitled to Get Offended or Stay Angry Apr 25, 2021
    Show notes

Today’s guest, Brant Hansen, wrote a book called “Unoffendable.” He suggests that the idea of having “righteous anger” is a myth and not biblical. There's much peace to be found by recognizing the jacked up state of this world and adjusting expectations accordingly. And it's the right way, according to Brant.
Guest co-host Jory Micah provides some valuable pushback to round out the discussion. What about Jesus flipping tables? What about the pissed off prophets? What about the mother of an innocently slain child?

At the beginning of the episode, Ellen Mauro, Jack Hoey III and Joey discuss ableism as Joey thinks society as a whole is way too sensitive about the use of words.

292 - Downfall of Bill Hybels, Fixing Toxic Church Cultures, and Being “TOV” Apr 18, 2021
    Show notes

SHARE THIS EPISODE WITH YOUR PASTOR. YES, I'M YELLING.
Prolific theologian and author Scot Mcknight, along with his daughter Laura Barringer, recently released a book called “TOV" (TOV means “good” in Hebrew). This book was written partly as a response to the downfall of Bill Hybels, pioneering mega-Church Pastor of Willow Creek Church; but it is also a general exhortation for all churches to promote and follow “TOV leaders,” those with fullness of total moral behavior.
Co-host Chip Judd, Scot Mcknight and Joey discuss Bill Hybels' fall, toxic leadership culture in churches, and why pastors better take their damn masks off. Like, right now. Take them off.
Is there a solution to all this mess? Scot says, "YES, we need more TOV leaders."

    291 - Repenting From Bad Christian Apr 14, 2021
    Show notes

I've been reflecting on a lot these last couple of years. Recently I took the time to think deeply on my time with Bad Christian, a podcast and community I was co-founder of and co-hosted since 2014. What a journey it was. "Good times" is an understatement.
On this episode however, my reflections on that past season of life revolve around things I'm no longer proud of and no longer jive with. It took being far enough removed from that 5-year run, for me to see the thought patterns and convictions I'm happy to now be freed from; walking away for good. Repentance is a great thing.

    290 - Dirty Rotten Church Kids Apr 11, 2021
    Show notes

Please, pretty please, no sensitive ears need to tune in on this one. There's your warning. The dynamic duo, Josh and Adrian, of the Dirty Rotten Church Kids podcast join us to talk through their journey from church planters to “de-churched” and what led to them to starting Dirty Rotten Church Kids Podcast. We talk pastors who like to tell others every time they have sex with their wives, the power of community and whether “are you a Christian” is an annoying question.
At top of episode, Chip Judd, John Mark McMillan and Joey discuss their enneagram numbers, a “road rash” moment Joey is still shocked that he fell into, and a season in which Chip was an “unhealthy enneagram 8.” Oh, and way back in the day, John Mark used to look for fights.

    289 - I’m a Woman Who Re-Translated The Bible Apr 03, 2021
    Show notes

One of the few women to translate the Bible, Bonnie Lewis discusses her journey that led to this wonderful masterpiece. The journey was wrought with outside criticism revolving around a female’s audaciousness to do such a thing as translate the Bible. Bonnie's “inner Fundamentalist" wasn’t so quick to let her off the hook in pursuing this endeavor; but over time, her Maker made paths straight and vision cleared to proceed.

Part of Pastor With No Answers extended family, Bonnie, shares her journey that led to her writing the enlightening idiomatic translation of the Bible. It’s called Timshel, a collection of the most commonly heard stories in the Old and New Testament.
So, what do we make out of the chauvinistic nature of the Bible? When everyone is getting a different meaning out of the Bible, how do we know what to trust? And what finite being gets to be an authority of God’s work? We discuss this and more.
We also discuss a survival story from the big Texas snow that occurred this past winter. Joey comes clean with how Bonnie (and her husband, Cy) were recipients of some “anxiety texts” of his, around the time he was in crisis with his mental health.

288 - A Biblical Case for Medical Aid in Dying Mar 28, 2021
    Show notes

Our guest does not call this suicide, nor labels as euthanasia. Working with Compassion and Choices, Rev. Madison Shockley advocates for the humane option for the terminally ill to choose the means and timing of their impending death. Rather than facing the prospect of a ruthless and painful journey leading to the end, he advocates for freedom and peace that comes by giving them the driver seat of when and how they will die. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more gracious, loving and biblically sound outlook on this endeavor that is now legalized in numerous American States.
We discuss real-life instances in which people have benefitted from this option and how one goes about ending his or her life with this medical aid. We also dissect evangelically-postured objections to one being able to take the timing of death into his own hands.

Before any of this, Ellen Mauro, Jack Hoey III and Joey discuss and debate spanking kids and reflect on parenting children as an Enneagram 5.

287 - Christian Persecution in the USA? (w/ John Mark McMillan and Chip Judd) Mar 21, 2021
    Show notes

I mean, we’re not really persecuted here in the states, are we? And any flack the church receives is likely our own fault, right? Chip Judd and John Mark McMillan discuss with Joey whether Christians are persecuted in America. John Mark has an example of a time he was. Also discussed here is the all too common ostracization (and cancelling) of a person for simply having one unpopular opinion. Lastly, we look at the short-comings of science as well as that of post-modernism.
