Ellen, Jack and Joey kick things off talking about that eternal place of torment, Joey making a case for the "obvious and logical unfairness" of any one being eternally separated from God. The mere thought of this doctrine seems to make a mockery out of passages that claim God’s mercy to be everlasting.

Dr. John Dickson, scholar, author, documentarian, and podcaster from Australia just released his newest book, "Bullies and Saints: An Honest Look at the Good and Evil of Christian History” and believes we may be living in the darkest age of Christianity ever. At the end of our conversation, he explains why.
During this conversation, Dr. John walks us through a historical look at the church, a history full of bullies and saints, atrocious evils, and selfless activism that changed the course of history, making the world a much better place forever. From carrying out the Crusades to initiating the abolishment of slavery, the church has seen its share of both bullies and saints.

316 - Is Derek Webb Deconstructing His Deconstruction? Sep 21, 2021
    Show notes

Ellen, Jack and Joey kick things off with a conversation about speaking in tongues. Joey thinks he speaks in tongues and is just fine with not being sure.
Derek Webb has raised the eyebrows of many Evangelical Christians through the years, many of them huge fans of his prolific (former) Christian band, “Caedmon’s Call.” We’ve seen this a hundred times. One of our “Christian heroes” starts to express doubt and maybe makes a controversial statement every now and then; next thing we know, our hero has deconstructed his faith, gotten a divorce and probably behind the scenes, tortures little kittens.
Only Derek knows the ends and outs of his story, but on this episode, he invites us in to hear about it too. This includes his journey that landed him into this new space of re-investigating his faith. Derek now works at a church and is married to a singer and musician of a worship band. And he's traded in "beliefs" for hypotheses.
Joey takes this opportunity to put Jack Hoey on the spot to share with Derek the season of time in which Derek, Mark Driscoll and Rob Bell were the three main faces on Jack’s “Mount Rushmore" of Christian influencers.
Derek is one hell of a dude and is writing a new album, “The Jesus Hypothesis,” in which he’s reconsidering the possible implications of Jesus’ life, teachings and resurrection.

315 - The Bad Christian Divorce: (Part 5) of My Major Depressive Episode Sep 14, 2021
    Show notes

Subscribe here to keep up with all things "Pastor With No Answers" as well as a new digital family we'd love to have you a part of. You don't have to be alone in your spiritual questions and you don't have to play by society's "new standard" of taking sides and being polarized. Join us!
The story of my depressive disorder in 2019 is profoundly incomplete without including a narrative of my departure from the BadChristian Podcast and community. On this episode, I include insight from friends and family, recounting a story of great loss as well as my journey from brokenness to health. Or let’s just say healthIER. – Joey

BadChristian Podcast and community was started in 2013 by Matt Carter, Toby Morrell (of the band Emery) and friend, Joey Svendsen (pastor of a church in South Carolina). Brutally honest and often irreverent Christian podcasts like this are now a dime a dozen but at the time, “BC POD” occupied a unique space, and as a result of its quick rise in popularity, proved to be a vibe that many Christians had an appetite for. The three aforementioned hosts were not only co-workers but also good friends.
Unfortunately, all humans are flawed and sometimes, even when motivated by the best intentions, relationships get broken to an extent in which they aren’t salvageable. Joey shares his take on the “break up story” with his friends and co-hosts; the first (and hopefully only) situation of this kind he’s ever had to walk through.

Special thanks to contributors (in order of appearance):
Ryan Amick, Sean A. Scapellato, Jared Svendsen, Karen “PK” Simmons, Jack Hoey, Krystal Halvorson, and special outtake with Ryan Amick.

314 - Dear Earthling, We Are All We Got (w/ Propaganda) Sep 07, 2021
    Show notes

Jason Petty (known as Propaganda) joins Joey and his friend Robbie Madison who are fresh off of reading Prop’s new book, "Terraforming.” With this book as the backdrop, the three discuss why people do evil and ponder if humans can actually be evil. Prop describes how culture is made and how we, the Earthlings, can turn the tide and go in a better direction. He maintains an intriguing vibe of optimism (that Joey is jealous of) with his belief in the possibility of making a better world. The three also discuss how the "Gen Z kids" are bringing in a new wave of love and acceptance, and they reflect on September 11th 2001.

Sometimes we need to take a deep breath and laugh at how silly we all can be. From church conferences to pastors’ smoking hot wives, from “prom songs for Jesus” worship songs and ridiculous pastor jokes to every church wanting a black worship leader, comedian Shama4realz and Joey poke fun of, laugh at and lament about church culture.

311 - Pastoring an Evangelical Church after Deconstructing (w/ Abbey Norman) Aug 24, 2021
    Show notes

Pastor, author and bartender, Abby Norman, shares Joey’s zeal for loving people right where they're at, both seeing the Christian faith through more progressive lenses and are in fellowship with (and in shepherding roles with) those who are more conservative.
Abby shares some of her experiences in life, including the story that led to her writing, “You Can Talk to God Like That: The Power of Lament to Save Your Faith.” She shares the time when she grasped God's acceptance of the emotion of anger, even when directed at Him; and how this realization sealed the deal in her being a Christian from that point on. Joey shares how his current positioning in ministry is a more unique space than what his involvement was in the BadChristian Podcast.

At top of episode, Jack, Ellen and Joey talk deconstruction. Jack used to be a Calvinist and Ellen is in an uncomfortable season of rethinking the bible. Joey wonders if the influx of progressive Christian faith may be the beginning of a new reformation. Jack says “hell no” (my words, not his) to that theory.

310 - Pete Enns: Calvinism, The Fall, the Afterlife, etc. Aug 17, 2021
    Show notes

Podcaster (Bible for Normal People), Author (Sin of Certainty, Exodus for Normal People, How the Bible works and more), bible scholar (PhD) and just a heck of a dude, Pete Enns tries to answer tons of dumb-ass theology questions from the mind of Joey Svendsen. Some themes that come out of this one: mystery of the afterlife, the importance of the resurrection, how systematic theology is broke, The Message Bible, some of Jesus’ limitations and a different way to look at the story of Adam and Eve. How’s that for a jam packed episode!

309 - “The Billy Graham Rule” Dissected and Debated Aug 12, 2021
    Show notes

Regulars to the show, Chip Judd (30+ years counseling experience) and Ellen Mauro debate and discuss the risks of spending "alone time" with the opposite gender in date-like scenarios, car rides, closed doors, out of town business trips. Is this playing with fire? Or is this a dated policy that churches need to abort from, so females can stop feeling like they are merely hot-bodies, dangerous, predatory, male-slaying dragons? 308 - My Depressive Episode (Part 4): Our Pastors Walked With Us & the Mental Institution Aug 10, 2021
    Show notes

Here's to friends and hope. Joey and Pricilla reflect on Joey’s mental health crisis of 2019 with their pastors and friends, Josh and Lisa Surratt; these two who were in their corner, up close and personal like very few were. Josh and Lisa reflect on the sense of urgency they felt in prioritizing Joey’s health and as their leaders, doing whatever was in their power to keep him safe.
During this time Joey’s brain wasn’t processing thoughts in a healthy manner (major understatement). Fear of losing his job equated in fear of losing the house. The Surratts are the leaders of the church Joey is employed at so he [Josh] fielded a lot of Joey’s irrational questions pertaining to these fears. Lisa, a seasoned healthcare professional, wanted Joey to admit himself into the hospital right away. Joey eventually ended up there for a week, and he shares what that time looked and felt like.

Brian McLaren also joins to converse with Joey who shares the role Brian played in his eventual full recovery.

    307 - How to Have an Enemy (w/ Melissa Florer-Bixler) Aug 03, 2021
    Show notes

Mennonite Pastor, Duke Graduate and author, Melissa Florer-Bixler, talks about her newly released book, How to Have an Enemy: Righteous Anger and the Work of Peace. She explains why she is an "empathy skeptic" and how she can have rage for some one like President Trump while still wanting him to be free, as there's no healing that comes from a desire to see one punished. She poses an important question: what are some justice-related issues that Christians can agree to disagree on and what issues are universally intolerable and incongruent to the gospel of Jesus Christ?
“We need a radical reorientation to the reign of God.” -- Melissa
That sounds beautiful, doesn’t it? Umm, YES.

At the top of the episode, Joey, Ellen Mauro and Hayne Griffin discuss their issues with the word "heresy" and how the bible isn’t age-appropriate for kids. Hayne shares a story in which Bill Hybels "came to the rescue for women" and Ellen shares a spiritual awakening she’s walking through in how one can’t go wrong with focusing on Jesus’ love while also having critical eyes for everything outside of Jesus. Joey thinks he used to be brainwashed by Mark Driscoll.
