    Parenting Our Future

Parents! We CAN change the world, starting with the way we’re parenting our future.
Up to this point in history, children have been seen as less than and parented in a way that uses power over a child. Most of us were parented in this way but there is a shift in thinking about the way we raise our kids. Parents don’t feel good about using shame, blame, criticism, punishments, and even rewards, to get their kids to listen. Parents are wanting a different way because they know from their own childhoods this type of parenting hurts and leaves us with scars we take with us through our adulthood.

Each one of my episodes is designed to help you navigate the difficult journey of parenting but in a way that is more peaceful and intentional. I’ll show you how to get your kids to listen and cooperate without yelling, punishments and rewards. I’ll show you how to understand your own feelings and those of your kids.

My intention is to bring you to a place where you feel connected with your kids and yourself (we often get lost when we become parents!). Tune in weekly for all the inside tips, tools and tricks I teach my private clients to help you build the family you always wanted, and to become the parent you always envisioned you would be. I promise to provide you with fun and entertaining content that will leave you seeing your kids and your reactions in a whole new light!

Please make sure to share the episodes that give you goosebumps, and leave you feeling inspired! I am always grateful for every person who subscribes, leaves a review and rates my podcast 5 stars.

    From the Podcast:

When you are in a "low vibe" state and feel like you are dwelling in a place of lack and triggered, follow these steps.

    1. What am I feel in and what is the story I'm telling myself? Is it true? How is this working for me?
    2. As I see this situation, am I aligned with lack/fear or abundance/love. Think of a sliding scale where zero is lack/fear and ten is abundance/love.
    3. What old worn-out pattern or habit-based in lack is being presented to me for clearing?
    4. What is the new action coming from the energy of love and abundance. If you had no fear, how would you show up?

POF24: How to Get Your Kids to Listen…THE FIRST TIME Dec 24, 2019
    Show notes

All parents hate it when they are ignored! We can't stand repeating requests that fall on deaf ears! Being ignored and unheard leads to frustration, resentment, anger and yelling!

There is a way to stop repeating and start getting cooperation and I share that in this episode.

I also talk about the power of listening to your kids and how it's a GAME CHANGER in your relationships with your kids and all the other people in your life!

    About Robbin McManne

Robbin is a Certified Parent Coach, author and speaker. She works with parents from all over the world to help them build more connection and find more joy and cooperation in their parenting.

Robbin is a former 'Angry Mom' and for over 12 years, Robbin juggled a full-time corporate career while being a mom and wife, prior to becoming a Parenting Coach. In her corporate career, Robbin has a background in marketing and public relations, training, and event planning. She understands firsthand how many moms struggle to balance work and family.

It's because of her struggles as a parent that she found the world of peaceful parenting and has dedicated her life to teaching parents how to build a strong family, so their kids thrive.

Robbin's work focuses on building and strengthening the parent-child relationship so that children grow up with resilience, confidence and strong emotional intelligence. She works with parents to help them understand their own emotions and frustrations in parenting, so they can help build their children's sense of self without losing themselves in the process!

In October of 2018, Robbin released her first book, "The Yelling Cure – How to stress less and get your kids to cooperate without threats & punishments." Her book is being read by parents all over the world 1000,000 copies sold to date. www.yellingcurebook.com

Robbin divides her time working with her clients, speaking at events and spending time with her two boys and husband. You can usually find her at a hockey rink or sports field cheering on her boys. Most importantly, Robbin has changed the way she parents and connects with her sons and is dedicated to helping parents find the same joy, connection and cooperation in their families.

    From the Podcast:

When we deeply listen to our kids, they feel loved & loveable and that what they have to say is of value to us (even if we might not be interested in the topic). We want them to know that their thoughts and ideas matter!

    Steps to listening:

    1. Listen with your whole mind and body. Be in the moment with them.
    2. Listen for understanding without judgement or criticism.
    3. Listen without formulating your answer before they are done speaking.
    4. Repeat back what you heard them say!

Steps to getting your kids to listen

    1. Connect – go to them and get their attention by giving them a 'lovie' – tap them on the shoulder, or rub their back, for example.
    2. When you have their attention, make your request
    3. If you get resistance, clarify if you can wait or if they have to do it now - try to model cooperation here and create a win/win
    4. Take them – "Come on, let's go together!"
    5. Give them any help they need in the spirit of being supportive! Don't push your kids to do things before they are developmentally able to! That creates stress for everyone so allow natural development to unfold and your kids will want to do things on their own when they are ready.

If you are worried your child is addicted to gaming, look for the following signs. Alone, these changes may not indicate a problem but in combination, this might suggest your child is having a problem:

Changes in personal hygiene – stop bathing, brushing teeth or caring about body odor and appearance

Sleep patterns – trouble falling asleep or staying asleep

Self-care – stop journaling, team sports, or other relaxing and recharging activities they used to enjoy

Socialization – withdrawing from their social circle

Change in personality – from cheerful to moody, angry or aggressive (for example)

High-risk behaviors – smoking, vaping, drugs, and/or sex

Abrupt mood changes – and abrupt change from calm to rage over a seemingly insignificant or unrelated thing – like a social media post

Overplanning – indicates your child might be trying to regain some control by over planning simple, straightforward tasks

Avoidance – of certain tasks, people, activities and/or places

TOOL: Choosing to Show Up for the difficult relationships in your life. Use this tool when the SAME relationship challenges keep showing up and you want to get the learning, do the healing and move on.

Your difficult relationships, with your kids, friends and/or family are assignments are happening FOR you, not to you. They are here to help you heal a pattern or stuck emotion so you can move forward and make progress.

Step 1: What's the situation that keeps happening or that you keep attracting that's triggering you?

Recognize that these situations/people/circumstances are here to help you heal. Decide to show up for the assignment by affirming you are ready.

Step 2: Give yourself permission to feel the feelings below the triggers. What are you feeling?

Step 3: Say a prayer for guidance and then open up to receive what comes to you:

Example prayer: "Thank you, Universe, for presenting me with this divine assignment for spiritual growth and healing. I am ready and willing to show up for this assignment with love. I welcome your support. Show me where to go, what to do and what to say. I trust I'm being guided." - Gabriel Bernstein

Gabby Bernstein's blog that shares this tool: https://gabbybernstein.com/how-not-to-wind-up-in-the-same-situation-again-and-again/

TOOL: Relationship Perspective Shifter. Use to interpret your circumstances, life events and interactions with people to understand what you are being called to learn so you can evolve and expand into your calling.

The purpose of the lessons that come in the form of life circumstances, life events and people is to likely help you to learn any one of these powerful life lessons:

    • don't let fear win, choose love
    • you are good enough just as you are
    • you have what it takes
    • you do have a purpose
    • THIS is your purpose
    • have courage
    • you are lovable just as you are
    • you are not your mistakes
    • you are forgiven
    • stand up for yourself
    • use our voice
    • have self-respect
    • own your value
    • believe in yourself
    • have faith
    • set boundaries
    • believe you are deserving
    • own your power
    • know your unique gifts
    • step into your brilliance
    • shine bright
    • align with love
    1. Who in your life is here to help you heal and evolve? (presenting as a V.D.P. = very difficult person)
    2. What is happening with this person?
    3. How are you currently interpreting the situation (what messages are you getting)?
    4. If this person is here to teach you something to help you heal, evolve and grow (something on the list likely) what are they trying to teach you? (often it's the very opposite of how these situations make you feel)

Once you get the lesson, the next step is to engage with this person from a place of having learned the lesson.

    1. How is this lesson meant to help you heal, grow and evolve?
    2. How would you respond to this situation if you applied the lesson?
    3. What boundaries would you set?
    4. What actions would you take or how will you engage differently?

Now it's time to engage from a place of worthiness and connection.

    From the Podcast:

    Researchers

In a study done by researchers Victoria Talwar and Kang Lee from McGill University describe three stages of lying:

Stage 1. Children begin to lie around age two or three. These first lies often focus on just denying misbehavior. They may involve wishful thinking more than deliberate efforts to deceive. From the perspective of young children, if they say they didn't do it, then their parents won't be mad, and it will somehow magically erase their misbehavior!

Stage 2. Around age four, children begin to be able to imagine how someone else might think. Their lies become more believable because they take into account what the listener does or doesn't know. They know the difference between truth and lying, and that lying is bad, but they also want to please adults, so they lie to cover up misbehavior.

Stage 3. Around age seven or eight, children not only are capable of deliberately deceiving someone, but they also can manage to stick to a false story and to look and sound sincere while doing so. Kids this age tend to lie because they don't want to get in trouble and because they don't want to think of themselves as "bad."

Don't forget to watch your own lying in front of your children! Lying is a learned behaviour so the TRUTH IS, having honest kids starts with you! 😉

POF19: Escape to the Wild with Andrea Hejlskov Nov 19, 2019
    Show notes

Have you ever fantasized about leaving everything behind to live in the cabin in the woods? Away from work stress, life stress, overwhelm, technology, keeping up with the Jones', and packed schedules?

When my guest, author and mother of four, Andrea Hejlskov's husband, in the midst of their chaotic life, said "what if it's not us that's the problem? What if the problem is what's out there" What he meant is that they always thought they had to DO more to be happier (go to the gym, bake bread from scratch, grow our own vegetables, etc) and this sparked a shift in them that made them want to stop endlessly running and getting nowhere and working so hard but never really having enough money.

The ups and downs of her experience are fascinating especially bringing four kids along for the ride!

    About Andrea Hejlskov

Andrea Hejlskov is a Danish author and journalist living off the grid in the wild woods of Southern Sweden. She has lived with her husband and four children in the forest for more than six years. When you or a child you care about needs a stress intervention, follow these recommendations of Dr. Sonia Lupien, the director of the Center for Studies on Human Stress in Montreal and follow the links for more information and tools. – Via www.heartmindonline.org

    1. Know the Signs

The more you are aware of both the physical and emotional signs of stress, the more quickly you can intervene. Stress can manifest in different ways. If any of the following show up, you might want to take a closer look:

    • Problems sleeping (this may indicate worry)
    • Changes in behaviour (for example a calm child who becomes agitated and vice-versa)
    • Very strong emotional outbursts
    • Difficulty with learning and memory (when a child is stressed they have a hard time focusing and distinguishing between what is relevant and not relevant)
    • Hyperactive behaviours (think fight and flight!)
    • Frequent colds and flus (this may be a sign of a low immune system)
    • Changes is hunger, appetite and digestion
    • Muscle tension and headaches
    1. Harness the Power of Others
      • Gather a circle of support
      • Connect with animals
      • Plan activities to support the child to do things for others
    1. Problem Solve
      • Name the feelings
      • Identify the trigger in the situation
      • Emphasize ways that the child can increase their feeling of control
    1. Release it
      • Breath
      • Be active - physical movement and play helps to release the extra energy caused by stressful situations
      • Listen to or make music
      • Laugh!

POF17: School Choice with Andrew Campanella Nov 05, 2019
    Show notes

We all want our kids to get a good education and be successful in school. BUT not every school fits your child's unique needs and abilities. Is your child gifted? Does your child have learning disabilities? Is the school your child in just not a good fit? Do you know you have a choice and the right to choose a school that fits your child? Are you aware of the many options that are available? This may seem like an exciting concept but also daunting because where do you start?

In this episode, Andrew Campanella, the President of National School Choice week in The United States talks about how and when parents can look for alternatives for their kids based on their needs.

Why should you care? The fact is that if kids are unhappy in school, even if the school is considered a good school, it can lead to higher rates of dropouts and for students that drop out, this affects their confidence, and self esteem. Studies show that students who dropout are at higher risk of incarceration, will earn less over their lifetime and have shorter lifespans.

This episode is of great value to every parent with school aged children, no matter where you live!

    About Andrew Campanella

Andrew Campanella is the president of National School Choice Week, the largest public awareness effort in the U.S. focusing on opportunity in K-12 education.

With the goal of informing parents of their school choice options, Andrew and the NSCW team work with more than 21,000 schools annually—along with thousands of organizations and homeschooling groups. Under Andrew's leadership, NSCW has experienced remarkable growth, from 150 events and activities in 2011 to more than 40,000 in 2019. In recognition of this work, Andrew was named by PRNews magazine as the Event Marketer of the Year for 2015.

Andrew is the author of the forthcoming book, The School Choice Roadmap: 7 Steps to Finding the Right School for Your Child, a guidebook that helps parents identify education environments that meet their children's needs. (Beaufort Books, January 2020).
