    Parenting Our Future

Parents! We CAN change the world, starting with the way we’re parenting our future.
Up to this point in history, children have been seen as less than and parented in a way that uses power over a child. Most of us were parented in this way but there is a shift in thinking about the way we raise our kids. Parents don’t feel good about using shame, blame, criticism, punishments, and even rewards, to get their kids to listen. Parents are wanting a different way because they know from their own childhoods this type of parenting hurts and leaves us with scars we take with us through our adulthood.

Each one of my episodes is designed to help you navigate the difficult journey of parenting but in a way that is more peaceful and intentional. I’ll show you how to get your kids to listen and cooperate without yelling, punishments and rewards. I’ll show you how to understand your own feelings and those of your kids.

My intention is to bring you to a place where you feel connected with your kids and yourself (we often get lost when we become parents!). Tune in weekly for all the inside tips, tools and tricks I teach my private clients to help you build the family you always wanted, and to become the parent you always envisioned you would be. I promise to provide you with fun and entertaining content that will leave you seeing your kids and your reactions in a whole new light!

Please make sure to share the episodes that give you goosebumps, and leave you feeling inspired! I am always grateful for every person who subscribes, leaves a review and rates my podcast 5 stars.

If we don't, our kids think they need to be in charge and that's when things get really hard and challenging! Learn how to solve some of the hardest parenting struggles just by showing up as an "In Charge Parent!"

    From the Podcast:

Your struggles in parenting are not happening to you, they are happening for you to help you grow yourself up.

How do you know if your child is the one in the lead? They are precocious, bossy, demanding, unwilling to take your lead and defiant. We usually want to shut these kids down but in fact what they are saying is that I don't feel seen, heard or understood, so we need to get even bigger to get them to see we are their best bet so they can relax.

How to bring swagger. Your child, if they are in the position of being in charge, will be two steps ahead of you so that means you need to jump forward and anticipate the needs your child. This means you have to do some work to plan what your child's needs are going to be. Not easy but worth it!

Being "Large and In charge" means you show up with kindness, empathy, wisdom and firmness (holding firm boundaries). You are constantly looking for cues from your child to say, I see you, I hear you, and I get you.

Child: "I wanted to go for ice cream!!!"

Parent: "I can't even believe you said that ice cream today it's actually international take your kid for Ice cream day and I'm actually driving to the ice cream store right now"

Child: "you are so mean, I wanted to watch more TV"

Parent: "I knew you were going to say that, which is why I already have another show ready for you"

Child: "I don't want to talk to you!"

Parent: "Now isn't the time to talk."

Child: "get out of my room!"

Parent: "I'm going to need to go now"

Parent: "You sound really frustrated right now"

Child: "I'm not frustrated, I'm angry"

    Parent: "yes, you are angry"

Child: "I'm not going to school today"

Parent: "Yes, I know today feels like a not going to school day, I get that. I could tell from the minute you woke up that it would feel like that." (then it's up to you to decide if they can stay home or not. If they have to go and are upset, you give them empathy).

I knew you were going to ask for that____ so I got this ready/did this/am going to get you_____

I knew you would want more___ so I did______

How to Advocate for Your Child | POF34 Mar 03, 2020
    Show notes

It's hard enough to bring a typical child into this world but what if your baby is born sick? You are thrust into a world that is completely foreign to you full of medical jargon and often confusing and counter-intuitive information. You want to use your intuition and protect your child but its so hard to know what you should be worried about and what is just normal for a new baby. You can be left feeling angry, confused, lonely, ashamed, helpless, overwhelmed, scared, and lost. What if you have an older child at home? How do you make sure they don't get lost in the mix? What if your marriage is suffering because of this? What if you need to go back to work?

Through Annette Hines' experience, she now teaches you how not to be brushed aside and advocate for your child so you are heard, taken seriously and ultimately get the best care for your child.

    About Annette Hines

Annette, an award-winning powerhouse advocate for the special needs community to share an important with your listeners. According to the CDC, disabilities affect 1 in 7 children. Over the past 2 decades, the number of children with chronic health conditions doubled from 12.8 percent to 26.6 percent. Not only can taking care of a child with a disability seem like an insurmountable task for a parent but making sure their child has a secure future when they are no longer there can seem daunting as well and can cause increased worry, stress and struggle.

She is the author of the best-seller Butterflies and Second Chances: A Mom's Memoir of Love and Loss, the inspiring true story of a mother's special needs journey, and her struggle to secure the best possible life for her child in the face of bureaucratic resistance and marital crisis. It is a story of sacrifice, dedication, and the life-altering adjustments a special needs parent has to make when confronted with the unthinkable—the loss of a child. But most of all, it's about love and an extraordinary mother-daughter relationship that flourished without words in the darkest shadows of adversity.

She has spent the last two decades as a professional advocating for people with special needs through her firm, Special Needs Law Group of Massachusetts, PC and is the host of Parenting Impossible – The Special Needs Survival Podcast

    From the Podcast:

If you are struggling with a special needs child take these into consideration:

    • Go easy on yourself – so it's frozen pizza again tonight! Your kids are getting fed.
    • You are the expert when it comes to your child. The expert isn't somebody else! You are the one who has the most information about your child from all the different areas and experts. YOU are in the seat of authority.
    • Communication is key. You can't communicate through emotion, even if you are feeling so many emotions. Be clear, concise and able to communicate the end goal – both written and orally. Come to the table with ideas as well – don't rely on everyone else to have the solutions.
    • Know when you are in danger. This might be the time to get some legal support or opinion
    • Embrace what you CAN do!

How to Use Fun and Play to Get More Cooperation and Connection|POF 33 Feb 25, 2020
    Show notes

Are you silly? How comfortable are you acting goofy? Sadly, we don't have much room in our lives for fun and games. We are tired, stressed, rushed and exhausted. We may be stiff and tired and easily bored when we try to get on the floor and play – especially when it means we have to switch gears from our stressful days or when you know there are a million other things you need to be doing. BUT fun and play makes our kids happy and us too!!!

Did you know that play is how kids sort out and make sense of their world and experiences? If your child is too young to tell you what's going on with them, you can find out through play.

Does your child refuse to do what you ask? Why not diffuse the situation with a joke or a tickle? We don't always have to be so serious!

Listen to find out how you can harness the power of fun and play!

    From the Podcast:

Here are some simple tips and guidelines to follow when you are playing with your kids (from Lawrence Cohen's book, Playful Parenting).

    • Follow the child's lead but make sure the game is safe, don't allow it to get out of control.
    • Play with the child but don't take over, let the child change the game.
    • Listen but don't tell what to do.
    • Talk about what the child is doing and encourage, eg. "It looks like the spaceman wants to rule the world. What are the people going to do?"
    • Allow plenty of time.
    • Allow for experimenting and mistakes.
    • Don't compete with young children; this can discourage them from wanting to play with you.
    • Appreciate and encourage your children's effort, eg. display their works of art. I like playing with you. That was fun.

    Play Ideas

    • Card Games
    • Dress Up - Instead of simply watching your child play dress up, join in! Put on a fancy dress or suit and have fun.
    • Sports Games -Get outside and throw a ball! It's exercise and it's FUN!
    • Science experiments and really cool! Bonus: it's an excellent way to clean a shower! Go on an adventure or scavenger hunt
    • Play Grocery store where you take turns to be the cashier
    • Build a fort
    • Have an inside or outside picnic – we love this
    • Random parties – have a surprise birthday party for one of your child's stuffies or favourite toys!
    • Opposite day
    • Pretend you are mad at something your child did right
    • Pick up a book and open it backwards and announce THE END and then argue with them about putting it back.
    • Have them make you laugh as you sit straight-faced
    • Pour water down your front and pretend you can't drink (great for a hot day)
    • Put drops under your eyes to fake cry and pretend you are really upset about something
    • Pretend you can't find your child even though you are right in front of them

Normally we are asking our kids WHAT do they want to DO but Être Girls and founder Illana Raia are asking them WHO do they want to BE? Illana talks about how parents can nurture your child's interests and find mentors to connect with your child. Why? Because it's this age group are more likely to quit their activities because they are overscheduled, self-critical and often underestimated. Matching girls with professional, successful female leaders is all about inspiring young girls and showing them what's possible for them and what they can achieve. Besides, these female leaders were once middle schoolers too, and can share how they made it through!

The Power of Forgiveness for Yourself and Your Kids |POF31 Feb 11, 2020
    Show notes

Are you holding on to anger for your child? Your children? Are you angry at yourself?

In this episode, I'm talking about forgiveness. As parents, especially moms, we hold ourselves up to an impossible standard of the type of mom we think we should be. One that we will never achieve (because it's a ludicrously high standard). Then we beat ourselves up and put ourselves down, we feel shame, we think we are bad parents and we sometimes hate ourselves.

We also have anger towards our kids. We feel resentment, bitterness, frustration, helpless, trapped, unappreciated and depleted

I want to show you how you can forgive yourself and your kids because forgiveness puts you in the driver's seat of your life and it means you take your power back.

Holding on to disappointment and shame for yourself, for how you see yourself as a parent, robs you of your happiness and peace. Holding on to resentment and frustration with your child stops you from entering into empathy.

Forgiveness opens the door to self-acceptance, connection and empathy.

    From the Podcast:

    Your thoughts are not facts.

When you have a negative thought about yourself as a parent and your child, you can challenge them so you can let go of the negative emotions that are holding you back!

Byron Katie, in the book, Love What Is, uses a series of questions to help you challenge your thoughts.

When you can isolate one that doesn't serve you, ask yourself,

    1. Is it true? You may want to say yes right away but that's your brain on autopilot
    2. Is it really true? Is it 100% accurate or not? Can you see it another way?
    3. How does it make me feel? Notice any storylines you ae holding on to. Name the feelings.
    4. Who would life be like without this thought? How would you feel? How would you see yourself or your child?

Repeat this process for you and your kids and see what you can release, let go and forgive. Write it all out if you need to. It can be cathartic to purge all that you are holding on to on paper.

    Empathy by Thich Nhat Hanh

"When you plant lettuce, if it does not grow well, you don't blame the lettuce. You look for reasons it is not doing well. It may need fertilizer, or more water or less sun. You never blame the lettuce. Yes, if we have problems with our friends or family [kids], we blame the other person. But if we know how to take care of them, they will grow well, like the lettuce. Blaming has no positive effect at all, nor does trying to persuade using reason and argument. This is my experience. No blame, no reasoning, no argument, just understanding. If you understand, and you show that you understand, you can love, and the situation will change."

    From the Podcast:

Easing into mindfulness – just with breathwork alone, we can see changes in the brain that can make a positive impact in your life. These techniques and many more are found in Jennie's book, Mindfulness for Teens in 10 Minutes a Day.

    4 Square Breathing

This Breathing technique is probably one of the easiest and quickest ways to calm the brain and bring you back to the present moment with an alert and stress-free mind. If possible, use this breathing technique for at least 8 minutes to maximize results.

Close your eyes and imagine a relaxing environment. An example is to picture the beach or ocean. As you inhale, imagine the waves gently rolling up the beach and you exhale imagine the waves rolling back out.

    1. find a comfortable position to sit, with both feet placed firmly on the ground.
    2. Take a minute to notice your current body state and the pattern of your breathing.
    3. Once you have settled into place and your starting point, place both hands either on your diaphragm or, with palms up, resting on your thighs.
    4. Slowly inhale for a count of four (counting in your head) inhale, 2, 3, 4. Notice your belly rise
    5. Hold a count for four (counting in your head) hold, 2, 3, 4.
    6. Slowly exhale for a count of four (counting in your head) inhale, 2, 3, 4. Notice your belly fall
    7. Hold a count for four (counting in your head) hold, 2, 3, 4.
    8. Repeat the exercise a minimum of four times

    Superhero Stance

Some Psychologists have identified the concept of power posing. They note that how we hold our bodies and our posture influence how we think and feel about ourselves. Combining the power pose with a positive statement is a great way to connect to your internal strength and set powerful intentions for your day. Do this exercise on days when you have a big project or need to have a tough conversation with someone. Let the Super Hero Stance help you raw on your inner strength.

    1. Standing in front of a mirror, with your feet shoulder-width apart and your hands on your hips. Look yourself in the eyes while taking five deep breaths.
    2. say to yourself or out loud, "I seek strength, wisdom, and courage." Stand for 1 minute in this pose; look at yourself and hold these words to be true.
    3. Say to yourself or out loud, "I find strength, wisdom, and courage." Stand for 1 minute in this pose; look at yourself and hold these words to be true.
    4. Say to yourself or out loud, "I have strength, wisdom, and courage." Close your eyes and imagine yourself conquering the tasks of the day. Repeat this step again.
    5. to finish, take 5 deep breaths

    Self-Care-Ation

Self-care is about taking a mini-vacation from your worries and stresses. This one takes a little preparation but is worth the time. Take a zipper-lock bag and fill it with a combination of these items; flavored lip balm, mints, gum, lollipops, lavender essential oil, spearmint essential oil, scented lotion or any scented body care item. Keep this kit in your purse, bag or backpack. On those days you feel a little stressed, it's time for a Self-Care-Ation.

    1. find a quiet place to sit or walk and set a timer for 7 minutes. Pick a mint, piece of gum or a lollipop from your self-care-ation kit and start your 4, square breathing.
    2. look at your treat. Slowly remove any wrapper, if needed. Notice the sound, colour, shape and density of your treat. Smell your treat and notice any fragrance. Place the treat in your mouth. Notice the flavors. Roll the treat around in your mouth. Notice it's sensations and textures.
    3. Next, select a body care item and start another round of 4 square breathing. Open your body care item. Hold the item near enough to smell it. Notice any fragrance. Apply the body care item to your body. Notice the sensation as you apply the item. Notice any changes to your skin or lips as you apply it. Notice the smells once you apply the body care item. Take a moment to deeply breathe in the fragrance.
    4. finish with one final round of 4 square breathing

    Moving Through Motherhood - POF29 Jan 28, 2020
    Show notes

Hey there Mamas! I see you, I feel you and I understand your struggle. It's my mission to help you drop the mom guilt, stop feeling overwhelmed, embrace your body, let go the ridiculous expectations you have, release shame and all the "shoulds" you have for yourself!!

Join my guest, Amy Griffith, and I talk about how to surrender to YOUR UNIQUE journey of motherhood! Learn how to embrace the mess, ask for help (and not try to do everything!!) and take things one moment at a time.

    About Amy Griffith

Amy grew up dancing since age 5 and has been fortunate to make a career out of it. After experiencing life as a dancer in New York City and learning more about determination, hope, struggle, and community than she ever thought she would, the transition to yoga seemed natural to her. Stepping onto her mat and out of the constant, electrifying buzz that is city life, gave her the opportunity to simply slow down. Yoga taught her how to breathe, how to really listen to her body and how to find more compassion for herself and for others. Amy received her certification through The Prenatal Yoga Center and learned just how strong women are. Amy believes that "Our bodies are designed to create life and birth can be positive!" She was inspired and determined to share this positivity with her students. Having experienced two home births and one hospital birth, she's witnessed the power of trusting her body. "I learned that there is a strength within us that is revealed during pregnancy, then birth, then motherhood."

POF28: Setting Limits For Your Kids Jan 21, 2020
    Show notes

Our Children, at their core, need safety and protection to grow. As Parents, we need to construct a scaffolding of support around a child within which they can learn and explore the world and what it means to be in relationship with others.

There are a number of ways parents can create this scaffolding around a child. This is done through daily routines, limits, connected communication and empathy. One of the most important foundational elements is values.

Values are so important because when you clearly determine your values, you can set up your limits/boundaries for your kids. limits are much easier for kids to 'buy into' because they are attached to a value that everyone in the family holds.

Learn how to set up your values and limits and how to peacefully set them for your family!

    About Robbin McManne

Robbin is a Certified Parent Coach, author and speaker. She works with parents from all over the world to help them build more connection and find more joy and cooperation in their parenting.

Robbin is a former 'Angry Mom' and for over 12 years, Robbin juggled a full-time corporate career while being a mom and wife, prior to becoming a Parenting Coach. In her corporate career, Robbin has a background in marketing and public relations, training, and event planning. She understands firsthand how many moms struggle to balance work and family.

It's because of her struggles as a parent that she found the world of peaceful parenting and has dedicated her life to teaching parents how to build a strong family, so their kids thrive.

Robbin's work focuses on building and strengthening the parent-child relationship so that children grow up with resilience, confidence and strong emotional intelligence. She works with parents to help them understand their own emotions and frustrations in parenting, so they can help build their children's sense of self without losing themselves in the process!

In October of 2018, Robbin released her first book, "The Yelling Cure – How to stress less and get your kids to cooperate without threats & punishments." Her book is being read by parents all over the world 1000,000 copies sold to date. www.yellingcurebook.com

    From the Podcast:

What is the difference between a rule and a limit you ask!?

Limits are carefully and consciously planned with family values in mind. They are rooted in an understanding of developmentally appropriate expectations of the child's development.

Limits are NOT, demands coming from an expectation of complete obedience, but are a process of teaching and support. Limits emerge from the parent's fundamental responsibility to keep children safe, to teach them the skills of being in social relationships and to teach them the values of the family.

Both rules and boundaries can prevent misbehavior, but with rules, the payoff to children for compliance is simply avoiding a negative consequence or punishment, not because they want to do the right thing.

Rules are the end of the conversation and with limits, they can be part of the conversation. Let me break it down for you:

Rules are inflexible and use fear and punishment in order to enforce them and are rooted in control over the other person. They also focus on negative or punitive reaction – in other words, punishment. Rules are often enforced with statements like, "If you do/don't do this, I'll do this to you." "you must follow or else!"

They create a scenario where one person wins while the other loses. Children may not feel heard and it doesn't leave any space for empathy. This can lead to disconnected communication

You want to use limits because they can be both firm and flexible – you set a limit that you want to hold but there is also room for compromise. It has a value at its core but the way we honor this value can change, that's why we have flexibility.

They allow for cooperation – you can work together to find a solution that works – parenting with, not over

A limit makes your child feel supported and not controlled and most importantly, create a win/win scenario!

POF27: School Choice Week with Andrew Campanella Jan 14, 2020
    Show notes

Our education system is changing in ways we might never have predicted. Most parents value education as one of their top priorities, and for good reason! We want our kids to succeed in school so they can grow to be intelligent adults with good jobs. BUT, what if they are struggling in school? Do you know you can choose a new education path for them? We all want our kids to get a good education and be successful in school BUT not every school fits your child's unique needs and abilities.

Is your child gifted? Does your child have learning disabilities? Is the school your child in just, not a good fit? Do you know you have a choice and the right to choose a school that fits your child? Are you aware of the many options that are available? This may seem like an exciting concept but also daunting because where do you start? In this episode, Andrew Campanella, the President of National School Choice Week in The United States, talks about how and when parents can look for alternatives for their kids based on their needs and where to start.

Why should you care? The fact is that if kids are unhappy in school, even if the school is considered a good school, it can lead to higher rates of dropouts and for students that drop out, this affects their confidence and self-esteem. Studies show that students who dropout are at higher risk of incarceration, will earn less over their lifetime and have shorter lifespans. This episode is of great value to every parent with school-aged children, no matter where you live!

    About Andrew Campanella

Andrew Campanella is the president of National School Choice Week, the largest public awareness effort in the U.S. focusing on the opportunity in K-12 education. With the goal of informing parents of their school choice options, Andrew and the NSCW team work with more than 21,000 schools annually—along with thousands of organizations and homeschooling groups. Under Andrew's leadership, NSCW has experienced remarkable growth, from 150 events and activities in 2011 to more than 40,000 in 2019. In recognition of this work, Andrew was named by PRNews magazine as the Event Marketer of the Year for 2015. Andrew is the author of the forthcoming book, The School Choice Roadmap: 7 Steps

to Finding the Right School for Your Child, a guidebook that helps parents identify education environments that meet their children's needs. (Beaufort Books, January 2020).
