    Parenting Our Future

Parents! We CAN change the world, starting with the way we’re parenting our future.
Up to this point in history, children have been seen as less than and parented in a way that uses power over a child. Most of us were parented in this way but there is a shift in thinking about the way we raise our kids. Parents don’t feel good about using shame, blame, criticism, punishments, and even rewards, to get their kids to listen. Parents are wanting a different way because they know from their own childhoods this type of parenting hurts and leaves us with scars we take with us through our adulthood.

Each one of my episodes is designed to help you navigate the difficult journey of parenting but in a way that is more peaceful and intentional. I’ll show you how to get your kids to listen and cooperate without yelling, punishments and rewards. I’ll show you how to understand your own feelings and those of your kids.

My intention is to bring you to a place where you feel connected with your kids and yourself (we often get lost when we become parents!). Tune in weekly for all the inside tips, tools and tricks I teach my private clients to help you build the family you always wanted, and to become the parent you always envisioned you would be. I promise to provide you with fun and entertaining content that will leave you seeing your kids and your reactions in a whole new light!

Please make sure to share the episodes that give you goosebumps, and leave you feeling inspired! I am always grateful for every person who subscribes, leaves a review and rates my podcast 5 stars.

Clearing up Fears With Facts - From Covid19 to Kawasaki|POF45 May 19, 2020
    Show notes

It's mid May, 2020 and things are starting to open back up as the global quarantine ends and restrictions are removed. BUT this is leading to new fears about sending kids back to school and daycare and new fears are emerging about Kawasaki Disease. Fears and rumours are swarming about a new illness that's affecting children, but we don't yet understand it. My guest is Pediatrician, Dr. James Lewis who is here to clear up the fears with facts about what the medical community knows and doesn't know …yet. Dr. Lewis talks about medical fears, how doctors will handle returning patients, the emotional strain on kids and parents and how we will need to handle kids going back to school.

About Dr. James Lewis Dr. James Lewis, a Professor of Pediatrics at the Joan C Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University in Huntington, WV, is board certified in both Pediatrics and the sub-specialty of Neurodevelopment Disabilities.

In 1983, he and his family moved to Huntington, West Virginia, to join the Department of Pediatrics at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University. He practiced both general and behavioral pediatrics and cared for hospitalized newborns, children and adolescents. In 2002 he developed the School Solutions Center at the University, devoting his practice exclusively to children with school and behavioral problems. He continues to see new patients who have been referred for evaluation and follow-up care on a daily basis, teach medical students and train pediatric residents. Throughout the process, he successfully employs a parent-centered multidisciplinary team following the medical home model.

Dr. Lewis lectures regularly on ADHD and coexisting conditions to parents and professionals. He has presented his research interests in ADHD and its association with autism, anxiety, parental stress, learning disabilities and adverse childhood experiences at national and state meetings of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the Pediatric Academic Society, the Learning Disability Association of America, the Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics and CHADD. He has published more than 25 scholarly journal articles, book chapters, and scientific abstracts.

He is currently the Chairman of the West Virginia AAP Committee for Children with Special Health Care Needs and Foster Care. He was also awarded West Virginia's first five-year, Healthy Tomorrows grant from 2007 to 2012 to coordinate medical care, with a focus on ADHD, for homeless children. Dr. Lewis also received the inaugural Abraham Finkelstein Resident Teaching Award and two Special Recognition Awards from the AAP. Dr. Lewis and his wife Libby, have six grown children including twins, all with careers in medicine or teaching. Two of the boys have ADHD with associated educational and behavioral issues. They are particularly proud of their three grandchildren and are happy to provide pictures on request.

    From the Podcast:

If you are worried about your child being sick, the first thing to check is their temperature. A high fever for over 24 hours is a big concern. Seek medical attention if that happens.

The new coronavirus like illness being seen in children is still being studied. It is similar to, but not Kawasaki Disease. Dr. Lewis wants to reassure parents that there are very few cases and that the top medical experts around the world are on it so not to panic.

Dr. Lewis recommends the following tips to a healthy and happy home life during this time: • Have a regular schedule – get your kids up at the same time each day • Be optimistic – a recent study of kids in China has shown those who had an optimistic outlook were able to be less depressed or anxious compared to other children their age who were not optimistic • Time to connect with your kids – join them in an activity they think is fun (don't just spend time with them doing school work!) • Take time to take care of YOU – this is essential! • Reach out to talk to other adults – you need the support of your community and if you are stressed talking it out with someone will help you.

Dr. Lewis recommends parents check Healthychildren.org for up to date facts and information.

How to Have Easy DAYsies and Smoother Bedtimes | POF44 May 12, 2020
    Show notes

Mornings are the worst time of the day for our family BY FAR! My husband and I are NOT morning people and apparently neither are our kids who are now 12 and almost 15. I have always found that a regular routine is key to getting us out the door on time and in peace (although it's not always a perfect science with teenagery boys!).

For parents who struggle with mornings and establishing a routine, meet your new best friend, Elaine Tan Comeau, founder of Easy Daysies! As a mom to three kids and a former teacher, she has developed easy to follow magnetic schedules to help kids stay on track of tasks from morning routines to bedtime.

If you struggle with these areas of the day like most parents, you need to check out this episode where Elaine explains why a schedule and routine is so important and how to get on one.

BONUS: Elaine shares her thoughts on homeschooling during quarantine as well.

P.S. use these same tips for when kids are back in school for when they need to do homework!

    About Elaine Tan Comeau

Elaine Tan Comeau knows the ups and downs of being a mom entrepreneur. She launched her product line and company from off her kitchen table two days after her third baby was born. She went from being a school teacher to accidentally inventing a children's product, to CEO and Founder of one of Dragons' Den favorite pitches, Easy Daysies, which incited a bidding war among all five Dragons. Also winner of Kevin Harrington's Pitch Tank. She has been featured in Forbes, Macleans, CBC, FOX, CTV, Canadian Business Magazine, and the Financial Post, to name a few.

Elaine was awarded the 2014 Canadian Mompreneur of the Year, Three time nominee for the RBC Women of Influence Award (but she has never accepted), Chamber of Commerce Award for Excellence in Business, and just published her third article in a University Textbook, "Educational Psychology". Her company Easy Daysies has won 13 awards and was announced as one of the 2018 Top Ten Most Innovative Companies by Small Business BC.

Elaine loves supporting women in business through speaking on stages, through her podcast "Elaine's Kitchen Table… the Business of Real Life", as the Lead Ambassador of the Western Canada Chapter of Mompreneurs Canada, and through her Best Seller book, "Sell Your Passion"! Elaine is honoured to have opportunities to give back and is a member of the Marketing Advisory Council for Douglas College, and a Patron for the ANCA Naturally Autistic World Festival.

Clutter, Chaos and Covid SOLUTIONS|POF43 May 05, 2020
    Show notes

I think of organizational skills in a similar way to parenting skills. We are expected to "just know" how to do it! AND do it well! But how? How many of you were taught exactly how to organize your home? I just winged it and I'm sure you did too! It's the same with parenting. We try our best to prepare but nothing can really prepare us for all that comes with raising another human being.

My guest Laurie Palau is a master at organizing and at teaching PARENTS so we can teach our kids. She also teaches kids on how to be more organized (and there is no better time than right now!).

You know when we say to our kids, "go clean your room!" Laurie explains that we need to be more specific so we can set our kids up for success. Does "clean your room" mean everything from vacuuming and dusting or does it just mean put your dirty clothes in the hamper? As you go about your day organizing and sorting, invite your kids to be a part of it and teach them how to do it. You can teach them that cleaning up is a part of playing!

Let's face it, most of us have so much stuff, and we can often get stuck because we don't have a good process for organizing things. Laurie has so many simple and practical ways to get us organized. Listen in for some great tips to help you (and your kids) get more organized even during a global pandemic!

    About Laurie Palau

Laurie Palau is the author of the book HOT MESS: A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO GETTING ORGANIZED, host of the popular weekly podcast, This ORGANIZED Life, and founder of Simply B Organized-a lifestyle company helping people live simply and work smarter.

Her advice has been featured in national publications including Real Simple & The New York Times. You can frequently find her as a podcast guest where she speaks on the topics of clutter, parenting, and entrepreneurship.

In addition, Laurie spends much of her time mentoring other professional organizers through her #SBOPartnerProgram and CLUTTER CLINIC™ speaker series, which helps other professional organizers grow their businesses.

A self-described homebody and coffee lover, Laurie lives in Bucks County, PA with her husband Josh, 2 daughters, and dog, Jeter.

Words matter and we often aren't aware that we're labeling our child's behavior in a negative way. We justify it by seeing it as, "calling it like it is" or "just pointing it out" to our child. If your child is shy…well, they're shy….right?

As parents we have to remember the huge impact our words have on our children. When they display "undesirable" behavior that we then assign a negative label that label can become part of their self-identity and their inner voice.

What I'm teaching you to do through this episode is to "Reframe" the way your see your child and their behavior. Why? Because when we see our child differently…we see a DIFFERENT child.

Can you imagine what life would be like without that negative voice or your hurtful self-talk? That would be freeing! This is the gift you can give your kids RIGHT NOW!

    From the Podcast:

Behavior is often temporary, but labels can be wired into your child's subconscious for a lifetime.

We reframe behavior for our child's benefit AND for the benefit of the parent as well because the way we see our child influences our thoughts perspectives and attitudes about our child.

We can reframe our child's behavior in a positive way that empowers them and isn't rooted in SHAME and DISAPPROVAL.

    What if You Don't Like Your Child? | POF38 Mar 31, 2020
    Show notes

Most of us, whether we admit it or not, would love it if our kids came out as a "mini me." Wouldn't it be so much easier if they did? Do you have a child that is the EXACT OPPOSITE of you and it drives you crazy? Does it make it hard for you to connect with them? Is it hard for you to like them? What words do you use to describe your child?

When we have a child that is so different from us, we usually pick out their differences and call them weaknesses. In this episode, my guest, author and parenting specialist, Wendy Gossett, shows how we can turn our child's differences traits that we can celebrate!

Our child's temperament is something we can't change (same without temperament) so intentionally choosing how we look at our child will change the way we see our kids!

    About Wendy Gossett

Wendy Gossett is a best-selling author, speaker and parenting specialist who helps parents understand their children by using temperament psychology and neuroscience. She has over twenty years of experience in education, working in the classroom and corporate sector.

However, all her educational experience didn't help when parenting her daughter. Because they were opposites, she struggled to connect. Since the User Manual for parenting her daughter didn't exist, she set out to create one.

She was seen by people all over the world in a viral video where she was embarrassing her seventeen-year old son in a Colorado blizzard while stranded on the Interstate. She never dreamed that this family video would be seen all over the world and talked about by Hoda Kotb, Debra Norville, the BackStreet Boys, and even Princess Kate!

Because she has struggled as a helicopter parent, an explosive parent and an embarrassing parent, she wants to help other parents struggle…a little bit less!

Mindset Practice - To tilt your mindset to the positive, do the following:

Notice the little gems that are naturally a part of your day. These can be small and ordinary experiences and are easy to overlook. These are the things that are also true in life and these gems are all around us so why not pick them up?

Don't dismiss enjoyable experiences as lightweight or trivial and don't think that grinding and wearying stressful experiences are somehow the foundation of a good life. No, it's the opposite, positive experiences fill us up and negative ones wear us down.

Remember what you are noticing is not made up, these are experiences that are real and you aren't making them up and just 'thinking positive'.

Set an Intentions for your day

Intentions are powerful because when you set your intentions, your thoughts follow, as do your actions

    • listen more and talk less
    • I will pause before I react
    • I will not take anything personally
    • I will look to find the fun and joy in the day

Or Implementation intentions – when X happens I will do Y

    Self Compassion - Ask yourself:

    • Am I being kind and understanding to myself?
    • Do I acknowledge shortcomings and failure as experiences shared by everyone?
    • Am I keeping my negative feelings in perspective?
    • Write a letter to yourself
