    Show notes

    Ho, ho, ho!

The Rock N Roll Archaeologist spends some quality holiday time with legendary producer/engineer Shelly Yakus. Join them as they discuss the making of 1987 star studded philanthropic album for the Special Olympics organization, “A Very Special Christmas”.

A Very Special Christmas is the first in the A Very Special Christmas series of Christmas-themed compilation albums produced to benefit Special Olympics. The album was released in mid-October 1987, and production was overseen by Jimmy Iovine and Shelly Yakus for A&M Records. A Very Special Christmas has also raised millions of dollars for the Special Olympics.[3] The cover artwork was designed by Keith Herring.

On January 16, 1998, the album was certified quadruple platinum by the RIAA for shipment of four million copies in the United States.
As of November 2014, A Very Special Christmas is the nineteenth best selling Christmas album in the United States during the SoundScan era of music sales tracking (March 1991 – present), having sold 2,520,000 copies according to SoundScan.

Shelly takes into Santa’s workshop circa 1987 and explains the inner workings of putting a charity compilation together by artists at their creative peak, working individually all around the globe for an incredibly good cause.

Muses and Stuff EP 94: Linda Thompson - A Little Thing Called Life - On Loving Elvis Presley, Bruce Jenner and Songs in Between Nov 29, 2018
    Show notes

This episode is for anyone who is truly curious about what it was like to live beside the KING- Elvis Presley. In her amazing memoir, Linda Thompson writes: “ as the adage goes, you don’t really know someone unless you live with them. Only two women ever actually lived with Elvis. I was one of them”.

Chanty read the incredible book A Little Thing Called Life On Loving Elvis Presley, Bruce Jenner, and Songs in Between by Linda Thompson, and presents it to you in this week’s episode. Linda is not only the author of this outstanding book and one of the few elite woman to have shared time and love with Elvis; she is a songwriter, lyricist, actress, mother and a grandmother! We can only hope that one day we get the opportunity to interview her!

If you would like never-before-heard information about the hunka hunka burnin love himself, tune in today to get all the adorable- and sometimes a little bit squeamish- deets.

Linda tells her remarkable story with candour, grace and humility. She waited until just recently to release her memoir as a sign of respect towards her relationships- these people who she shared so much of her life and love with. Linda held onto her story until she carved out her own path, waiting decades, so that that her inclusion of the Elvis years in Rock and Roll history would carry more dignity and credibility. Enjoy the show!

Rock N Roll Librarian Reads Petty: The Biography Nov 22, 2018
    Show notes

On October 7th, 2017 Tom Petty joined the rock n roll orchestra on the other side. He was 67 years young. For rockers around the world, like Prince a few months earlier, it was a shock coupled with immense sadness. Forever on we will not have Tom around with his Heartbreakers disposing easy wisdom in song or slyly telling off adversaries with Southern charm or that kick ass band that hummed like a stock car racer. It was a hard one to take.

Join the Rock N Roll Librarian Shelley Sorenson and the Rock N Roll Archaeologist Christian Swain as they discuss Warren Zanes’ 2015 biography of the Gainesville born singer songwriter born in 1950 who found rock n roll as the only answer to his passions.

No one other than Warren Zanes, rocker and writer and friend, could author a book about Tom Petty that is as honest and evocative of Petty's music and the remarkable rock and roll history he and his band helped to write.

Born in Gainesville, Florida, with more than a little hillbilly in his blood, Tom Petty was a Southern shit kicker, a kid without a whole lot of promise. Rock and roll made it otherwise. From meeting Elvis, to seeing the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, to producing Del Shannon, backing Bob Dylan, putting together a band with George Harrison, Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne, making records with Johnny Cash, and sending well more than a dozen of his own celebrated recordings high onto the charts, Tom Petty's story has all the drama of a rock and roll epic. Petty, known for his reclusive style, has shared with Warren Zanes his insights and arguments, his regrets and lasting ambitions, and the details of his life on and off the stage.

This is a book for those who know and love the songs, from "American Girl" and "Refugee" to "Free Fallin'" and "Mary Jane's Last Dance," and for those who want to see the classic rock and roll era embodied in one man's remarkable story. Dark and mysterious, Petty manages to come back, again and again, showing us what the music can do and where it can take us.

Muses and Stuff EP. 91: Dorothy Carvello Nov 05, 2018
    Show notes

When we read Dorothy Carvello‘s memoir Anything for a Hit: An A&R Woman’s Story of Surviving the Music Industry we were blown away. Dorothy had a life-long dream of working in the music industry and when the opportunity arose to work for Atlantic Records President Ahmet Ertegun, Dorothy jumped at the chance. Almost immediately she would discover this was no regular workplace. As Dorothy put it “If personnel had actually enforced the rules, everyone in the building would have been fired by lunch.”

With Dorothy’s dream job came amazing highs and very low lows. Sexual harassment and rampant drug use were all common daily occurrences and Dorothy battled constant misogyny with every step. Nevertheless she excelled, working her way up from Ahmet’s secretary to Atlantic Records first female A&R Executive. Dorothy loved going to live shows and the thrill of discovering and nurturing untapped talent but the constant abuse, both mental and physical from her male co-workers certainly took it’s toll.

Dorothy would fight back and to this day continues to do so. We recently had a riveting conversation with Dorothy about how she pushed past the societal expectations she was raised with and how she built her career in the music industry. We also discussed her very unique friendship with Ahmet and couldn’t help but ask about the beautiful man named Michael Hutchence who was a shining example of what a man could be among the toxic masculinity. We talk about how we need to continue to push forward with #TimesUp and #MeToo because the battle isn’t over but thankfully there are women like Dorothy who are putting these stories forward and fighting back. Everyone needs to pick up a copy of this book immediately!

You can find Dorothy on Twitter and Instagram and her memoir where ever books are sold.

    Show notes

Episode 6 is a deep dig with the pioneering engineer and producer Lenise Bent.

Lenise comes form a family in love with music. She was one of very few women in the technical field of audio engineering in the 1970's. First hired at L.A.'s Village Recorders, along with three other women, by Spam scion, George A. Hormell II, who thought women would make superior engineers, Lenise is the sole survivor from that initial hire. She has had a long career in both music and film.
