Deeper Digs in Rock: Music Technologist to the Stars - David Frangioni Feb 18, 2019
    Show notes

This week the Rock n Roll Archaeologist sits down with music technologist to the stars, David Frangioni. Known to Steven Tyler of Aerosmith as Gyro Gear-Loose for his magical abilities in all things audio technology, David has worked with too many rockers to count. Along with the bad boys from Boston, he is also widely known for working on “The Osbournes” reality TV show.

He is the owner of Audio One and a collector of famous drum kits that he keeps at the Drum Experience Museum in South Florida. Now he has written a book on those drums, CRASH: The World’s Greatest Drum Kits from Appice to Peart to Van Halen, from our friends at Simon & Schuster.

From snares to cymbals, drums are taking over the stage in this first-ever collected look into some of the most famous drum kits of rock and roll history.

Crash is the definitive Illustrated history of the drum kits of rock ’n’ roll legends. Featuring images from live concerts, outdoor festivals, and private recording sessions, this spectacular volume captures the personal connection between artist and instrument. Along with the makes and models, each kit is accompanied by commentary about the history of the kit, its special characteristics, as well as its significance to rock history. Including photographs of Neil Peart, Carl Palmer, Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, Ringo Starr, and many more, Crash is the ultimate photographic guide to the world of rock ’n’ roll’s most famous drum kits.

Enjoy a wide ranging discussion, along with rock star tales as David navigates the seas from early drum machines to MIDI to today’s sprawling live productions.

Rock N Roll Librarian Reads: Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen Feb 14, 2019
    Show notes

Shelley and Christian dive into Bruce's autobiography, 'Born to Run'.

In 2009, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed at the Super Bowl’s halftime show. The experience was so exhilarating that Bruce decided to write about it. That’s how this extraordinary autobiography began.

Over the past seven years, Bruce Springsteen has privately devoted himself to writing the story of his life, bringing to these pages the same honesty, humor, and originality found in his songs.

He describes growing up Catholic in Freehold, New Jersey, amid the poetry, danger, and darkness that fueled his imagination, leading up to the moment he refers to as “The Big Bang”: seeing Elvis Presley’s debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. He vividly recounts his relentless drive to become a musician, his early days as a bar band king in Asbury Park, and the rise of the E Street Band. With disarming candor, he also tells for the first time the story of the personal struggles that inspired his best work, and shows us why the song “Born to Run” reveals more than we previously realized.

Born to Run will be revelatory for anyone who has ever enjoyed Bruce Springsteen, but this book is much more than a legendary rock star’s memoir. This is a book for workers and dreamers, parents and children, lovers and loners, artists, freaks, or anyone who has ever wanted to be baptized in the holy river of rock and roll.

Rarely has a performer told his own story with such force and sweep. Like many of his songs (“Thunder Road,” “Badlands,” “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” “The River,” “Born in the U.S.A,” “The Rising,” and “The Ghost of Tom Joad,” to name just a few), Bruce Springsteen’s autobiography is written with the lyricism of a singular songwriter and the wisdom of a man who has thought deeply about his experiences.

Deeper Digs in Rock: No Cameras Allowed with Julian David Stone Feb 11, 2019
    Show notes

At the Aftermaster studios in Hollywood, The Rock N Roll Archaeologists sits down with ex-outlaw photographer, Julian David Stone.

What’s an “outlaw photographer”? It used to be, anyone with a camera at rock n roll shows needed to be vetted and credentialed by the band and promoters. Every ticket would be printed with, “No Cameras Allowed”. And so Julian, unvetted and uncredentialed, became an outlaw from 1981-1987.

Muses and Stuff EP 99: Dolly Parton - The Early Years Feb 07, 2019
    Show notes

We all know her, we all love her and there is no one else like her. Who could we possibly be talking about? That’s right, Dolly Parton!

Today Chanty presents the story of Dolly Parton, the early years. With the help of Dolly’s book “Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business”, you can hear the story of how Dolly got to be the super star she is today. A small town girl from the smoky mountains of East Tennessee, Dolly was one of twelve children born in a home no bigger than a shack. A real rags to riches story, Chanty explains how Dolly discovered God, Music and Sex (not necessarily in those orders) and in turn discovered and became the best Dolly she could be.

A story of faith, believing in yourself and dreaming big, this is a fun an inspirational episode that might have you saying “I didn’t know that!” We also cover Dolly’s longtime marriage to Carl Thomas Dean, a handsome young man she met after moving to Nashville. The couple have been married for over 50 years and are still going strong. What makes this marriage everlasting? You’ll have to listen to find out!

This month, Dolly will be honoured as the Person of the Year by MusicCares for her humanitarian work. She also celebrated a birthday last month, so Happy 73rd Birthday Dolly Parton!

Deeper Digs in Rock: Chris D. of The Flesh Eaters Feb 04, 2019
    Show notes

The Rock N Roll Archaeologist digs into the Death Rocker/L.A. Punk supergroup, the Flesh Eaters, with lead vocalist and head visionary, Chris D!

Coming out of the original late 1970’s L.A. punk scene, centered around the legendary club The Masque, Chris D, a cerebral poet, journalist and singer, turned in his own brand of Western America influenced punk. Less New York and London and more it’s own thing encompassing a wide variety of styles, with jazz elements, Chris focused on unique instrumentation and howling vocals to get the job done.

In 1981, with the album “A Minute to Pray, A Second to Die”, the band reached supergroup status by including John Doe & D.J. Bonebrake from X, Dave Alvin and Bill Bateman from the Blasters and Steve Berlin before he joined Los Lobos. It was the only album to feature all of these now well known musicians.

Well Chris and the boys are back and in a big way and including Chris’s ex-wife/bandmate, extraordinary vocalist Julie Christensen (see her credits). They have just released a new album of material that not only reaches the heights of “A Minute to Pray, A Second to Die”, but may even surpass it with it’s David Lynch film aesthetic and spooky themes that make it chic and romantic to worship the dead.

The album is “I Used to Be Pretty” and is out now on Yep Roc Records. And lucky you, they are on tour at various times in 2019. Christian was in attendance on their San Francisco stop and if you love something ultra cool and deliciously decadent, it’s a must see show!

    Show notes

The Rock N Roll Archaeologist discusses The Beatles’ rooftop concert held fifty years ago this week with audience member and ex-U.S. manager for Apple Corp, Ken Mansfield. Aka: “The Man in the White Coat”.

Ken has just released his book, “The Roof: The Beatles Final Concert, published by Post Hill Press.

HE WAS THERE! Apple Records former US manager Ken Mansfield takes a touching and comprehensive look back on one of Rock ’n’ Roll’s most significant events, while bringing an insider’s perspective to the days leading up to those 42 fascinating minutes of the Beatles monumental Rooftop Concert.

There are moments in time that cause us to stop and take notice of where we were and what we were doing when they happen in order to commit the experience to memory—how it made us feel, who was there with us, why it felt important. January 30, 1969 was one of those moments.

There are those who were on the periphery of the event that day and heard what was going on; but as one of the few remaining insiders who accompanied the Beatles up onto the cold windswept roof of the Apple building, Ken Mansfield had a front row seat to the full sensory experience of the moment and witnessed what turned out to be beginning of the end. Ken shares in The Roof: The Beatles Final Concert, the sense that something special was taking place before his eyes that would live on forever in the hearts and souls of millions.

As the US manager of Apple, Ken Mansfield, was on the scene in the days, weeks, and months leading up to this monumental event. He shares his insights into the factors that brought them up onto that roof and why one of the greatest bands of all time left it all on that stage. Join Ken as he reflects on the relationships he built with the Fab Four and the Apple corps and what each player meant to this symphony of music history.

Deeper Digs in Rock: 1965 - The Most Revolutionary Year in Music Jan 15, 2019
    Show notes

This week in Deeper Digs in Rock, The Rock N Roll Archaeologist sits down with guest, author Andrew Grant Jackson. In great detail Christian and Andrew discuss his 2015 book, '1965: The Most Revolutionary Year in Music'. Is it really the most revolutionary year in the rock n roll age? We will find out!

Fifty years ago, friendly rivalry between musicians turned 1965 into the year rock evolved into the premier art form of its time and accelerated the drive for personal freedom throughout the Western world.

The Beatles made their first artistic statement with Rubber Soul. Bob Dylan released "Like a Rolling Stone, arguably the greatest song of all time, and went electric at the Newport Folk Festival. The Rolling Stones's "Satisfaction" catapulted the band to world-wide success. New genres such as funk, psychedelia, folk rock, proto-punk, and baroque pop were born. Soul music became a prime force of desegregation as Motown crossed over from the R&B charts to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. Country music reached new heights with Nashville and the Bakersfield sound. Musicians raced to innovate sonically and lyrically against the backdrop of seismic cultural shifts wrought by the Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam, psychedelics, the Pill, long hair for men, and designer Mary Quant’s introduction of the miniskirt.

In 1965, Andrew Grant Jackson combines fascinating and often surprising personal stories with a panoramic historical narrative.

Andrew Grant Jackson is the author of Still the Greatest: The Essential Songs of the Beatles' Solo Careers and Where's Ringo? He has written for Rolling Stone, Yahoo!, Slate's "Blogging the Beatles," Baseline Studio System, music magazines Burn Lounge, Mean Street, and Dispatch, and copyedited the Hollywood monthly magazine Ingenue. He directed and cowrote the feature film The Discontents starring Perry King and Amy Madigan and served as actor Jeff Bridges's development associate at AsIs Productions. He lives in Los Angeles.
