Rock N Roll Archaeology Episode 16: East of Eden Oct 22, 2018
    Show notes

We start our tale of Paradise Lost in Buena Vista Park, San Francisco, in the fall of 1967. Hippie, the Devoted Son of Mass Media, is dead, and the San Francisco Diggers are conducting the funeral.

From the funky streets of the Haight we head east a couple miles to the Fillmore West, and meet a complicated man, concert promoter Bill Graham. It was during these early years in San Francisco that Bill created the rock concert experience.

Then a brief trip to Texas, where Janis Joplin cleans up and then heads back; to San Francisco to find her family. We get to know Janis a little better, and talk about her early work with Big Brother and the Holding Company--and what happened when Janis left Big Brother.

We’ll spend a little more time on the Big Picture. Politically, culturally, in pretty much every way, 1968 was a pivotal year, in America and around the world.

Then across the Bay, to the lands that lie East of Eden. We’ll meet two very different acts, that interestingly enough, have similar stories: Sly and the Family Stone, and Creedence Clearwater Revival.

We close it out with a short meditation on the aftermath of the Summer of Love. We still dream it and dance to it.

Today’s guest is Kristin Casey, author of the book Rock Monster: My Life with Joe Walsh as well as a surrogate partner and intimacy coach. Yep, we said Joe Walsh, a wildly (emphasis on wildly) talented musician and songwriter in his own right as well as a member of the Eagles and Ringo Starr and his all Starr Band, just to name a few.

After that Bobbies career took flight, she was acting, modelling and helping to create rock n roll history by starring in many music videos including Warrant’s Cherry Pie.

Deeper Digs in Rock: Growin' Up Rock Oct 03, 2018
    Show notes

A chat with Steven Michael and Sonny “Hollywood” Pooni of ‘Growin’ Up Rock’ Podcast fame!

These two rockers joined forces to talk all things hard rock and metal. They are true fans and live for the music. Like all of us at the RNRA, it is in the blood stream, born in an age when music was the currency that drove the culture. But they aren’t just discussing the past, they are very much into the present. In fact, their fourth show featured Sam Kizka from current young rock gods Greta Van Fleet!

Deeper Digs in Rock: Dennis Dunaway Sep 27, 2018
    Show notes

As teenagers in Phoenix, Dennis Dunaway, bassist and co-songwriter for the Alice Cooper group, and lead singer Vince Furnier (who would later change his name to Alice Cooper) formed a hard-knuckles band that played prisons, cowboy bars, and teens clubs. Their wild, impossible journey took them from Hollywood to the ferocious Detroit music scene, and along the way they discovered the utterly original performance style and look that would make them the stuff of legend.

Reel Rock: KISS Meets the Phantom Sep 24, 2018
    Show notes

Reel Rock returns to skewer the 1978 “film” KISS Meets The Phantom of the Park. Starring the band KISS. The Rock and Roll Reverend gets real weird with it, but like always, some of your questions will be answered such as …

    Who is responsible for this?!
Is Ace Frehley an African American dude?
Will our fearless Reverend be going to jail for the events of this episode?

Deeper Digs in Rock: K.K. Downing of Judas Priest Sep 18, 2018
    Show notes

It’s a deep dig into what makes K.K. one of the greatest guitarists in heavy metal, growing up very poor in the midlands of England after WWII, and finding music as a path to escape where he ends up in one of the biggest bands in the world. He is the first member of the band that becomes Judas Priest, the workhorse and the glue that keeps it together until he leaves in 2011. We discuss all of it and more from his new book 'Heavy Duty: Days and Nights in Judas Priest'
