EP. 05: Miss Pamela's Pajama Party with Simon Petty and Celia Chavez Jun 27, 2019
    Show notes

Joining Miss Pamela on this episode is Simon Petty & Celia Chavez aka Petty/Chavez. Petty/Chavez is an acoustic singer-songwriter duo who create a memorable and intimate live music experience for audiences in Southern California and beyond.

Simon Petty, frontman of the LA-based British band Minibar, and Celia Chavez, current backing singer for Enrique Iglesias, showcase their smoky vocal harmony and heartfelt, articulate songwriting on their debut EP, “Songs From the Second Floor.” More on the duo here: https://www.pettychavezmusic.com

Despite her infamy as “the World’s Most Famous Groupie” or “Queen of the Groupies,” Pamela Des Barres has many other facets, fascinations and unique talents. Known mostly for her heady dalliances and friendships with classic rock’s elite dandies in the 60s and 70s, she presciently kept copious diaries about those madcap revolutionary days and nights. Pamela has written four books, I’m With the Band, Take Another Little Piece of My Heart, (autobiographies) Rock Bottom: Dark Moments in Music Babylon, and most recently, Let’s Spend the Night Together: Backstage Secrets of Rock Muses and Supergroupies.

She has been teaching ongoing women’s writing workshops in Los Angeles and all over the country for twelve years, inspiring like-minded dolls to share their desire, stories and ideas in a totally safe environment. She calls these writing parties “Groupie Therapy.” And as an ordained minister, Pamela performs unique one-of-a-kind rock & roll weddings!

The Career Musician Ep. 20: United We Stand AFM with John Acosta Jun 25, 2019
    Show notes

As a long time union member himself, host of The Career Musician - Michael NOMAD Ripoll, speaks with John Acosta, the long standing president of Local 47 in Burbank, CA. John and Nomad share a similar path in the industry - both started as guitarists and have progressed into other areas of the music business. Nomad was a member of Local 257 in Nashville for 8 years prior to his move to LA where he's been a member of Local 47 since 2005. Shedding light on subjects that are both touchy and enlightening, this interview reveals why musicians should consider becoming AFM members. Especially if they're doing work "on the card", or "contract work", which simply means that it's a union gig.

Listeners who are interested in learning more about the union are encouraged to check out the local in their city and ask as many questions as possible. Nomad truly believes that the AFM is an organization designed to advocate for the working "Career Musician" regardless of the type of work their doing, or any preconceived notions or misconceptions they might have.

    Topics of Discussion include:

    Becoming VP of Union

Finding ways to involve the youth more with the Union

    Union Benefits

Deeper Digs in Rock: The Show’s The Thing: The Legendary Promoters Of Rock Jun 24, 2019
    Show notes

Deeper Digs in Rock goes to the movies when Producer/Director team Molly Bernstein and Phillip Dolin sit down with the Rock N Roll Archaeologist to discuss their new documentary, ‘The Show’s The Thing: The Legendary Promoters Of Rock’. Not only do we get the pleasure of having Molly & Phillip in studio with us, we also get to attend the DocLands film Festival in Marin County for a screening and party to hang out with old Bill Graham right-hand men Jerry Pompili and Danny Sher!

Pulling back the curtain on the unforgettable live shows of the ‘60s and ‘70s that came to define our collective musical memories, The Show’s the Thing reveals how a ragtag group of promoters virtually invented rock and roll. Bringing this untold story to life, directors Molly Bernstein and Philip Dolin introduce us to such larger-than-life personalities as kingpins Frank Barsalona and Bay Area legend Bill Graham. Colorful interviews with the promoters themselves and with the musicians whose careers would not have existed without them - including Carlos Santana, Jon Bon Jovi, and Bob Geldof - combine with a rich trove of archival material and a terrific selection of music from The Who, Simon and Garfunkel, David Bowie, and many more.

Rock Candy Ep. 73: Talking Heads - So New, So Wavey Jun 19, 2019
    Show notes

We're back at it this week to talk about a band whose music you know oh so well, but whose story is a little harder to get the deets on. Talking Heads started out as a trio of art students just trying to express their disdain for the status quo using sarcasm and metaphors. Little did they know that was exactly what the times were calling for. As time progressed, they became a band who took chances that paid off and are now one of the best known new wave bands ever.

Kick back with some Psycho Killer IPA from Finback Brewing as we tell the tale of this art collaborative that often gets looked at as a solo act (and why that totally does not check).

Deeper Digs in Rock: Ruffhouse: From the Streets of Philly to the Top of the '90s Hip Hop Charts with Chris Schwartz Jun 17, 2019
    Show notes

The Rock n Roll Archaeologist enters the world of Hip Hop for the first time with pioneering producer and record executive, Chris Schwartz! As founder and President of Ruffhouse Records, Chris signed and help shepherd big names in late 80’s and 90’s hip hop, like Cypress Hill, Kriss Kross, NAS and the Fugees. He was a part of the team that won Grammy’s Album of the Year in 1999 with The Mis-education of Miss Lauren Hill, a record that has sold over 19 million units.

Christian and Chris dig deep into his new book, Ruffhouse: From the Streets of Philly to the Top of the '90s Hip Hop Charts.

How Ruffhouse Records founder Chris Schwartz overcame poverty, abuse, and addiction to start one of the most pivotal labels in hip-hop history and launch the careers of some of music's biggest stars

As a struggling musician trying to catch a break in the '80s Philadelphia, Chris Schwartz navigated the crime-infested, morally bankrupt music industry to build one of the most successful hip-hop record labels in the world. That label was Ruff-house, which launched the careers of Nas, The Fugees, Cypress Hill, and others, dominating the charts and generating global revenues of over one billion dollars.

Schwartz and his partner, Joe Nicolo, built Ruffhouse from one desk and a phone to one of hip-hop's most revered record companies while simultaneously struggling with drug addiction and alcoholism. A story of money, greed, envy, betrayal, violence, addiction, loss, and redemption, not to mention a whole lot of music, Ruffhouse reveals the inside story of the record companies, recording studios, tour buses, private jets, mansions, radio stations, and concert halls at the height of hip-hop's 1990s heyday, while also uncovering the darker side of the business, from police stations to rehab clinics, courtrooms to prisons. Narrated in Schwartz's own candid, searing prose, Ruffhouse is a gripping portrayal of hip-hop culture and its transition to a global commercial platform.
