The Career Musician Ep. 21: Possible Chops with Dave Hooper pt.1 Jul 15, 2019
    Show notes

Dave Hooper is not only a first call LA session ace and touring drummer, but also a great teacher of the drumming chops he's so diligently cultivated. With the launch of his new site Dave breaks down drumming riffs or 'chops' into easily digestible short phrases, then slows them down to half speed on video with normal speed audio. Although this may not sound like a breakthrough, it actually is for the discerning musician who's always trying to learn the nuances of their craft.

To boot, PossibleChops.com does this with some of the industries most sought after drummers!

On the flip side, Hoop & Nomad talk about all of the mundane rigors of the Career Musician as it pertains to real life situations on the gig. In this 2 part interview these muzoids go deep into the ether of chasing the dream while living the reality of the music biz!

Using Barnet Singer's book "Brigitte Bardot: A Biography", Chanty recounts Brigitte's early years as a curious but lonely young girl who once thought of herself as ugly and unintelligent and who became a woman emulated by women around the world. According to Time Magazine "Not since the statue of liberty has a French girl lit such a fire in America", and to this day Brigitte remains a symbol of beauty, a friend to animals, a singer and an actor with more than 40 films to her credit.

And she knew this path was hers from the start. In this first part we cover her small town beginnings where she becomes a big fish jumping into an even bigger pond, making the move to NYC and begin to look for her own lucky star. Which, turns out, isn't too far away, because the hits were soon to follow.

So why not live in a material world and drink a cold can of Mikkeller's Hazy For You IPA while you enjoy some terrible Italian accents?

History in Five Songs: American Heavy Metal Jul 09, 2019
    Show notes

This is the show that aims to make grand and often oddball hard rock and heavy metal points through a narrative built upon the tiny idea of a quintet of songs. Buttressed with illustrative clips, Martin argues quickly and succinctly why these songs—and the specific sections of these tracks—support his mad professor premise, from the wobbly invention of an “American” heavy metal, to the influence of Led Zeppelin in hair metal or to more succinct topics like tapping and twin leads.

The songs serve as bricks, but Martin slathers plenty of mortar. At the end, hopefully he has sturdy house in which this week’s theory can reside unbothered by the elements.

In this episode Martin tells the history of American Heavy Metal in these Five Songs:

    Doctor Please - Blue Cheer

Born to Be Wild - Steppenwwolf

    Mississippi Queen - Mountain

Cities on Flame - Blue Oyster Cult

    Rock the Nation - Montrose

Deeper Digs in Rock: Hall of Fame Songwriter Chip Taylor Jul 01, 2019
    Show notes

This week Rock N Roll Archaeologist Christian Swain hunts down Songwriter Hall of Famer Chip Taylor, to talk about his new album ‘Whiskey Salesman’, as well as a fifty year career writing many huge and influential hits.

Riding high on the just released album and breakout single ‘Fuck All the Perfect People’

2016 Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Chip Taylor has been writing and performing for nearly 60 years and shows no sign of slowing down. The New York Times says it best: 'If you only know him as the guy who wrote 'Wild Thing' and 'Angel Of The Morning' - you don't know him!

Chip Taylor is making some of the most distinctive acoustic music around today.' 'Whiskey Salesman,' his latest in a remarkable string of recent albums, is at once both personal and universal. It is an album filled with timeless, intimate love songs - poignant, meditative odes to life. And drinking (in moderation) songs. Their spirit is perhaps best captured by the videos Taylor has created for each and every song (included on a dvd). Filmed at his own apartment and local bar, and starring his wife and friends, Chip welcomes everybody into his warm, heartfelt world. 'Whiskey Salesman' was co-produced by keyboardist Goran Grini and bass player Tony Mercadante. It also features master-guitarist John Platania (Van Morrison).
