EP. 04: Miss Pamela's Pajama Party with Johnny Echols of Love May 23, 2019
    Show notes

This week Miss Pamela is visited by Johnny Echols of Love. Love is of the first racially diverse American bands, their music drew on a diverse range of sources including folk rock, hard rock, blues, jazz, flamenco and orchestral pop.

Despite her infamy as “the World’s Most Famous Groupie” or “Queen of the Groupies,” Pamela Des Barres has many other facets, fascinations and unique talents. Known mostly for her heady dalliances and friendships with classic rock’s elite dandies in the 60s and 70s, she presciently kept copious diaries about those madcap revolutionary days and nights. Pamela has written four books, I’m With the Band, Take Another Little Piece of My Heart, (autobiographies) Rock Bottom: Dark Moments in Music Babylon, and most recently, Let’s Spend the Night Together: Backstage Secrets of Rock Muses and Supergroupies.

She has been teaching ongoing women’s writing workshops in Los Angeles and all over the country for twelve years, inspiring like-minded dolls to share their desire, stories and ideas in a totally safe environment. She calls these writing parties “Groupie Therapy.” And as an ordained minister, Pamela performs unique one-of-a-kind rock & roll weddings!

Deeper Digs in Rock: Ace of Cups May 20, 2019
    Show notes

This episode Christian has the pleasure of meeting the lovely ladies of Ace of Cups current members, Mary Ellen Simpson, Denise Kaufman, Mary Gannon and Diane Vitalich for a rousing discussion of the San Francisco music scene of the 1960’s and today.

From 1967 to 1972, the Ace of Cups were at the epicenter of the ‘60s cultural and social revolution. From the Acid Tests to the protests, from the free concerts in Golden Gate Park to the ballrooms of San Francisco, they shared stages with everyone from The Band to the Grateful Dead, and were chosen to open for Jimi Hendrix the week after his groundbreaking performance at The Monterey Pop Festival.

Despite eliciting music industry interest for their exceptional songs, sublime harmonies and exuberant live performances, the Ace of Cups never got the chance to make a record until 2018.

The first studio release by the original all-female rock band of the late ‘60s San Francisco scene is now available, featuring contributions from Bob Weir (Grateful Dead, Dead & Company), Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna), Taj Mahal, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Peter Coyote, and many more.

Rock Candy Ep. 69: Karen Carpenter - Square AF May 15, 2019
    Show notes

This week we deal with a different kind of mental illness with a completely different kind of musician. Karen Carpenter was a wholesome, everywoman type of artist with the silkiest voice one could ever ask for. But she was haunted by the need to have control over her weight. In the end, she would succumb to complications brought on by anorexia nervosa, so it's important we talk about her life in order to better understand how this disease affected her and her music.

Prepare yourself for a cocktail of BS with a delicious glass of Lagunitas Born Yesterday and take some time to appreciate this woman's beautiful voice.

Muses Ep. 105: Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen May 02, 2019
    Show notes

“They were two lost souls who had found each other, Their relationship came out of their inability to find what they wanted in the outside world. They were on the same wavelength. They fit each others needs. They were dependant on each other. They cared for each other. To them, what they had together was genuine love.” - Deborah Spungen

In this episode we shine a light on the iconic punk duo Sid and Nancy. A lot has been said about the pair over the years, and while researching for this episode we were shocked at how negative the media has painted Nancy who at heart was a troubled, very young woman. In this episode you'll hear all about their lives pre-punk, how they came together and how their equally self-destructive behaviour would be their downfall.

Using both Deborah Spungen's book And I Don't Want to Live This Life: A Mothers Story of her Daughters Murder and Malcolm Butt's biography Sid Vicious: Rock n Roll Star, you'll hear a different side to Nancy and discover why Lynx dubbed her "The Yoko Ono of Punk". Make sure you pick up Deborah's book for an even more in depth look at Nancy!
