The House List Ep. 114: Manifest (pt. 2) Nov 15, 2019
    Show notes

A year ago I sat down with Peter Collins (aka Manifest) on episode 71 and re-traced his life story leading to a tumultuous head with an ill fated Northern California casino robbery in the Fall of 2006. Pete went on the lam until being apprehended in Washington state some months later. This - as the previous episode - is meant to be a cautionary tale of what can go wrong when a person finds themselves at the end of their rope. Now days he can sagely reflect on the untimely decisions made by a man in the throws of addiction. Today he is a well adjusted member of society, doing well. I highly recommend going back to our first conversation (also recorded in Oakland, Calif) on episode 71 to get the full scope. Shout out to DJ CJ. Thanks for listening!

Muses Ep. 118: Carly Simon - Boys in the Trees- A Memoir Nov 14, 2019
    Show notes

This week, Chanty brings you the story of Carly Simon, based on her memoir "Boys In The Trees".

Carly grew up in a seemingly idyllic setting, with her family splitting their time between Greenwich Village and Martha's Vineyard and having Wednesday night sing-alongs around the piano. All was not as it seems, however, as the Simon family was one full of trauma and tragedy. Carly's upbringing inspired her songwriting that explores issues of love, crime, secrecy, vulnerability, monsters, beasts, love and longing.

In this episode, you'll also learn about some of Carly's muses (expected and unexpected!), steamy relationships (ahem, Cat Stevens!) and what exactly went on between her and Mick Jagger. We talk about her songwriting process, marriage to James Taylor and much more.

Rock Candy Ep. 94: Dream Theater - Stretch Armstrong It Nov 13, 2019
    Show notes

Hope you've got some extra time this week to talk about an extra special band, the one and only Dream Theater! Their legacy of epic tunes are only measured by the legacy of their unmatched techniques. Find out how a bunch of nerds got together at one of the most renowned music schools in all the world, only to drop out and become a household name in the world of progressive metal. We debate on how long is too long for a song and cover probably the most innocuous addict we ever will on this show. Before tuning in, why not find the band's beer van and grab yourself a tall boy of their own brew from Barrier Brewing Co to really set the mood for this fun tale!

Deeper Digs in Rock: Grateful Dead Historian Dennis McNally Nov 12, 2019
    Show notes

This week Christian has the distinct pleasure of sitting down with Grateful Dead historian, Dennis McNally. This one is special for the Rock N Roll Archaeologist because Dennis is an actual historian with a PhD in U.S. History and because one of the inspirations for the entire rock n roll archaeology project was the 2002 McNally book, “A Long Strange Trip: The Inside History of the Grateful Dead”. He is a real life rock n roll archaeologist!

Dennis McNally received his Ph.D. in American History from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1977 for a biography of Jack Kerouac which was published by Random House in 1979 under the title Desolate Angel: Jack Kerouac, the Beat Generation, and America. He became the Grateful Dead’s authorized biographer in 1980 and the band’s publicist in 1984. In 2002, he published A Long Strange Trip/The Inside History of the Grateful Dead with Broadway Books, a division of Random House. It made the New York Times best seller list.

No Filler: Coldplay - Parachutes Nov 11, 2019
    Show notes

Fresh out of the Metal Month oven, we hop onto the cooling rack and chill out with a little Coldplay and their 2000 debut Parachutes. We admire the atmosphere and tone with some tracks that aren't named after a primary color with a look at the dark mood of Spies, the dreamy Sparks, and the hard to ignore Radiohead vibes of High Speed. Perfectly paired with the piano and acoustic melodies of Chris Martin, it's the guitar riffs and segues of Jonny Buckland that make these filler tracks so memorable. Take a listen with us as we explore one of the most successful bands of all time at the moment that started it all.

    Tracklist:

    1. Coldplay - Spies
    2. Coldplay - Sparks
    3. Coldplay - High Speed
    4. Penelope Isles - Round
    5. Horse Jumper of Love - Sun Poisoning
    6. Travis - Big Chair
