Make it Stop: Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch - Discography with Sean Sullivan Nov 26, 2019
    Show notes

We're the ones listening to bad albums out there. Not you, not you, and not you. This week it's all about a true patriot and visionary, Boston's favorite son, revisionist 9/11 savior and vicious hate crime non-apologist Mark Wahlberg. Specifically, his stint as a New Kids-affiliated shirtless (and sometimes pantsless) white rapper named Marky Mark. Sean Sullivan of the Wahlberg enthusiast podcast Two Boys in a Balcony joins the fray as we listen to not one but two albums by The Funky Bunch. Selecting the most choice cuts, we get into his storytelling skills, his family values, and most importantly, his blinding of a Vietnamese man. Wahlberg, who again, never apologized for blinding a Vietnamese man as a youth, has rightfully disavowed his rap career, despite the fact that it propelled him into fingering Reese Witherspoon on a roller coaster in Fear a mere three years later. Is he correct in his assessment of these albums? Is there any value to be found in them? Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe go fuck yourself. Part of the Pantheon Podcasts Network.

The Imbalanced History of Rock and Roll: The Many Faces Of Alice Cooper Nov 26, 2019
    Show notes

From their early days as a band, through a 45-year solo career for the singer, Alice Cooper has evoked a certain response!

From the fans? Hell yes! But also from parents and some critics who just never got it. Markus and Ray go digging in Alice's closet with some surprising results!

Deeper Digs in Rock: Michael Nesmith - More Than a Monkee Nov 26, 2019
    Show notes

Happy Thanksgiving Diggers! This week we are serving up not a Byrd, but a Monkee!

Michael Nesmith sits down with the Rock N Roll Archaeologist to discuss much more than the Prefab Four! They delve into his Texas upbringing, his entrepreneurial streak and quite a bit about the highly influential First National Band, that helped usher in the Americana sound. They also devote a lot of our talk to Nez’s musical partner in crime, “Red” Rhodes, the sublime pedal steel guitarist who worked with Nez until he passed on in 1995.

See Nez went on a little rock n roll archaeology himself when a tape was discovered of the two “Cosmic Partners” playing a live show from McCabe’s guitar shop in 1973. After a lot of clean up work by producers Ed Heffelfinger and Nez’s son, Christian Nesmith, it is now out and available to purchase. Perfect for the holiday season!

Live archive release including 24 page booklet. Recorded at McCabe's in Santa Monica, CA, on August 18th, 1973, Cosmic Partners - The McCabe's Tapes is a rare and previously unreleased concert recording featuring Nesmith and a small coterie of fellow musicians, including long time recording partner and pedal steel player Red Rhodes. This recording is from a mini concert tour that was in support of what was to be Nesmith's final record on the RCA label, Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash. The dates would reunite him with the remnant players from Nesmith's Countryside label, under Elektra. Consisting of a rhythm section featuring Danny Lane on drums and Colin Cameron on bass, and the legendary O.J. "Red" Rhodes on pedal steel, this would be the last performance of it's kind and the beginning of an almost Homeric journey for Nesmith.

Love That Album Ep. 128: Marianne Faithfull's 'Broken English' Nov 21, 2019
    Show notes

    F. Scott Fitzgerald famously once said, “There are no second acts in American lives”.

Just as well that Marianne Faithfull is British.

Welcome to episode 128 of Love That Album podcast.

Marianne started out as a folk singer in the mid 60s. She was signed to Decca Records, home to the Rolling Stones. Her first single was the first song Keith Richards and Mick Jagger wrote, As Tears Go By. For a brief time, she was a major success story recording albums and appearing in films. Of course, she became Mick Jagger's girlfriend, and when you're in the Stones' orbit, you don't always come out unscathed. Her career and private life suffered greatly until 1979 when she signed to Island Records and recorded her album Broken English. It was not only successful, but came to be a landmark album by an artist that had not only been forgotten about, but became an important record respected to this day. To this day, Marianne is still recording....and it's probably all thanks to Broken English being embraced by the critics, new musicians, and the public.

I am joined once again by guitarist Shane Pacey and film writer, Kerry Gately Fristoe to talk about all things Marianne Faithfull, and especially why we love Broken English. Among many other things in the course of this conversation, we discuss politics, catharsis, having empathy for your song subject matter, being bored with your life, being an outsider, infidelity, Absolutely Fabulous....and Derek and Clive.

My huge thanks to both of my wonderful music nerd friends. You can dig into Shane's music and gigs at http://shanepaceytrio.com.au/ or https://bondicigars.com/

You can read Kerry's articles at https://prowlerneedsajump.wordpress.com/

Pamela Des Barres' Pajama Party with Iva Turner Nov 21, 2019
    Show notes

    Hi Dolls,

Iva Turner is my longest running friend. We met in 4th grade and have been friends ever since.

We were Beatlemaniacs together, and hit the Sunset strip together while still in high school.

She’s a writer, editor and actress and we still hang out all the time!

I can't wait for you to hear the stories from our youth and then some. Crazy, incredible, truly mindblowing adventures. This is where it all began...

    ~Pamela
