    Show notes

This week we're joined by fellow podcaster Victor Ruiz as we travel overseas for Where You Come From: France!

After highlighting French band BlackRain on a recent episode, our friend Victor clued us into several great rock and metal bands from that part of the world. It just made sense to turn the idea into an episode and share this music with you!

Bands highlighted in this special episode include Rising Steel, Eternal Flight, Gojira, Iron Lizards, Avaland, Overdrivers, Rise of the Northstar, Hangman's Chair, Devoid, Headcharger, Dagoba, H-Bomb, Satan Jokers, and Molybaron. It's a whole lot of stuff that was new to us and we're assuming it'll be new to you.

Check out Victor Ruiz on the now-completed Mars Attacks podcast and the upcoming Signals from Mars podcast.

We hope you enjoy Where You Come From: France and SHARE with a friend!

Rock's Backpages: Jason King on Queen + Sylvester + Boy George + Beyoncé Sep 13, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode, we invite Jason King to tell us about his multi-faceted career, from his Canadian upbringing to his chairmanship of Brooklyn's Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music.

Along the way, Jason talks about his writing on LGBTQ icons from Sylvester and Luther Vandross to Queen's Freddie Mercury, of whom he is writing a major biography. Jason recalls writing for Vibe and the Village Voice in the Noughties, listens to clips from Bill Brewster's 2002 audio interview with Boy George and discusses the brilliant career of — and new album by — Beyoncé.

After Jason and his co-hosts pay homage to revered Warner-Reprise chief Mo Ostin, Mark quotes from newly-added library pieces about John Lennon, the Jam, AC/DC and Primal Scream. Jasper rounds things off with remarks on a 1998 interview with Mo Ostin signing Prince, then known as "The Artist Formerly Known as..."

Many thanks to special guest Jason King. Find him on Instagram and Twitter @jasonkingsays.

Prisoners of Rock and Roll: God Save the Queen - The Sex Pistols Sep 12, 2022
    Show notes

The Sex Pistols were one of the pioneers of the music, fashion, and attitude of the punk rock movement. They were only together for about 2 ½ a half years and released just one album. But over that period, they were just as famous (or infamous) for their behavior as they were as for their music. They didn’t care what you, the music industry, or society thought about them.

Led by front man Johnny Rotten and an illiterate guitar player named Steve Jones who stole one of his first axes from David Bowie, they took a scorched Earth, double middle finger, bugger off attitude toward everything.

Over their short career, they were kicked off of two record labels, banned from British television, caused dozens of fights, and became the embodiment of punk rock anarchy. Then there’s the tragedy of Sid Viscious, who became an icon of the nihilistic live fast / die young attitude up when he died of a heroin overdose while out on bail for allegedly murdering his girlfriend.

In this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we’re taking a close look at the Sex Pistols. Including their chaotic manager Malcolm McClaren, the fights, the censorship, a Christmas party they threw for working class kids, and that one frigging amazing album that changed music forever.

Our show is sponsored by our home base of McCusker's Tavern at 17th and Shunk Streets in Philadelphia. We are proud supporters of our friends at Boldfoot Socks. We are just one of the dozens of awesome shows on the Pantheon Podcast Network.

Imbalanced History: 5 Favorites: First Ten Concerts Sep 12, 2022
    Show notes

Two guys in different phases of life, half a continent apart, experiencing music in a parallel manner is just one of the oddities inside this episode of the podcast. Musically, it's a wild all-over-the-road van ride with friends to a festival!

The mission to recall their first ten concerts was challenge enough for the Imbalanced Ones, but aligning them in an episode of 5 Faves? Well, the results are right here!

Ugly American Werewolf in London: Def Leppard Stadium Tour with Chris of My Rock n Roll Heaven Sep 12, 2022
    Show notes

It's great to welcome back our friend & HUGE Def Leppard fan Chris from My Rock n Roll Heaven & @rockthesetweets to our show to discuss seeing his favorite band live for the first time in 4 years.

The Stadium Tour with Def Leppard & Motley Crue as alternating co-headliners was announced in 2019 but thanks to COVID, it was delayed until this year. Def Leppard took the downtime to record one of their best efforts in years - Diamond Star Halos. Though Action Jackson caught the show in Florida, which we discussed on UAWIL #84, rain cut everyone's sets short. So we asked Chris to offer his experience in Toronto to compare to Jackson's, plus we want his take on how the new material fits in with the classics.

Yesterday's Concert: Bob Dylan Ruins Live Music Sep 12, 2022
    Show notes

It’s not uncommon knowledge that Bob Dylan's live shows can be hit or miss. It depends on his mood and what songs he feels like playing. However, as a naive Dylan fan, my understanding of the artist was limited to the early-60s folk singer—the image of a man dwarfed by his guitar—the protest singer who denied ever singing a protest ballad.

Yet, when I saw Bob Dylan live, he hid behind a keyboard, and his arrangements sounded nothing like the song. A sinking disappointment grew with every note. This was a bait-and-switch performance.
