Ugly American Werewolf in London: Alice in Chains - Dirt Sep 15, 2022
    Show notes

In 1992 Grunge was the only genre of music on the radio and in college dorms around the US. Alice in Chains were riding high (literally) on the success of their first album Facelift and hit single Man in a Box. After a successful opening stint with Van Halen and a best selling EP, Sap, Jerry Cantrell, Layne Staley, Mike Starr and Sean Kinney were ready to rise to the top of the grunge/metal scene.

But drugs, particularly heroin, were having a detrimental effect on the band which produced an album full of darkness, self-hatred and sickness. With titles like Sickman, Junkman, Down in a Hole, Hate to Feel, and Godsmack it's obvious Layne Staley is in pain but he delivers some extraordinary performances throughout the record.

Selling over 6 million copies with over 6 million singles as well, Alice in Chains couldn't really capitalize on all that success as they couldn't afford to take Layne Staley out on the road for fear of him being arrested or ODing. Still, with hits like Would?, Them Bones, Angry Chair & Rooster, this record will always be remembered, though it should be seen as a cautionary tale.

    Show notes

“Who The Fuck Is That Guy'? The Fabulous Journey Of Michael Alago” tells the astonishing story of a gay Puerto Rican kid growing up in a Hasidic Brooklyn neighborhood, who got on the subway one day and began a musical odyssey that helped shape the musical landscape across N.Y.C. and around the world. From rubbing elbows with NY scene makers at Max's Kansas City and CBGB, to being the19 year-old talent booker at the legendary Ritz, to making history as a 24 year-old A&R exec, signing the biggest metal band in a generation in Metallica, Michael Alago was on fire. Passion and excess would bring Alago crashing into the twin reapers of substance abuse and AIDS, but surviving them both he reinvented himself as an art photographer...healthy, sober, and as passionate as ever. Michael joins us to talk about the early New York City scene, Metallica, Public Image Limited, Nina Simone, and his photography. It’s an incredible journey. Join us!

Vintage Rock Pod: 72. Stewart Copeland Interview Sep 14, 2022
    Show notes

STEWART COPELAND, rightly regarded as one of the greatest rock drummers of all time, joins Paul to talk all about his career with The Police, their struggles to start with, the dynamics between him and Sting and what caused the friction, how the studio and song writing process evolved as the success built, the band's split at the height of their fame, their subsequent re-union tour almost 30 years later and what the relationship is like between the members today.

We also dive into Stewarts most recent work too, re-imagining The Police songs using an orchestra - and Stings reaction to this - a project about Italian witches involving Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders and of course about the recent Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert that Stewart performed at, at London's Wembley Stadium.

It's a fascinating conversation with Stewart pulling no punches, his charismatic personality on show at all times.
Also on the episode you'll hear Paul's Top 5 songs from the Police and your thoughts on last week's Top 5 Pat Travers songs.
