Ugly American Werewolf in London: Rush - Signals Sep 08, 2022
    Show notes

Signals was Rush's follow up to their biggest selling album Moving Pictures but it was not Moving Pictures II. Off the success of Moving Pictures and the tour, Rush were emboldened to further experiment with technology to evolve their sound to the 80s. Drummer & Lyricist Neil Peart started to draw inspiration from his own journey and the plight of those in the world around him. Geddy and Alex even chipped in on some lyrics. But not all fans love the synthesizers and technology from the last great power trio - many fans are turned off by their 80s output.

This was a time of experimentation and new directions for the band which would define their 80s sound. Subdivisions examines the plight of the suburban teenager, New World Man as the man at the height of his power, Losing It as an old man past his prime - quite a journey from Neil Peart. Released September 9. 1982, we hold this record in high esteem within the Rush catalog and this is our review for the 40th Anniversary of Signals - Rush.

The Devil's Music: Mink Stole Sep 07, 2022
    Show notes

The illustrious Mink Stole is a national treasure. Her incredible career has spanned over five decades, beginning in the late 1960’s when she and John Waters began their lifelong collaboration; she’s had roles in every one of his feature films. She’s also a singer and former advice column writer for The Baltimore City Paper. In this episode, Mink and hostess Pleasant Gehman dish about everything from the pre- “Pink Flamingos” days to her bohemian lifestyle in Baltimore, New York and Provincetown. They compare notes on their time served as cellmates in director Steve Balderson’s women in prison film “Stuck!” as well as her role as an art agent his latest work, “Alchemy Of The Spirit”, currently making the rounds of film festivals. Mink also spills the beans on her latest foray as a budding pianist, working with Peaches Christ, and a sweet but shocking paranormal experience.

Ugly American Werewolf in London: Genesis - Foxtrot at 50 Sep 07, 2022
    Show notes

In 1972, Genesis were gaining momentum and confidence. Thanks to the addition of Phil Collins on drums and Steve Hackett on guitar the year before, the band released Nursery Crime and embarked on a successful European tour. The tour's success inspired them to become more creative and stretch their material out not only for the album but to be played live as well.

Foxtrot saw the band experiment with new instruments (like the Mellotron they got from King Crimson), different time signatures and longer arrangements. From the opening Watcher of the Skies through the end of the 23+ minute Supper's Ready, Genesis stretched themselves artistically. Meanwhile, Peter Gabriel concocted ways on tour to create more buzz by wearing his wife's dress and a fox head on stage.

Steve Hackett, guest on UAWIL #87, is touring Foxtrot as it turns 50 in the UK September - October 2022 and will bring the tour to Europe and North American in 2023. Listen for insights from Steve on this episode and get tickets to see him on the Foxtrot at 50 Tour.

    Show notes

There's so much to tell about those early days of Metallica!

This episode really is a "toe in the water" compared to all there is to cover about this amazing band, but their debut set a tone, changed a ton, and became a Metal Classic!

Markus and Ray dig into the tunes, the tones, and the surrounding history at the time of the album. They also discuss Jon and Marsha Zazula, Megaforce co-founders, who were also one of the greatest couples in Metal music!

Listen to our episode with Jonny, for background, and the full story of Metallica, and Megaforce Records!!!

In this episode, we featured some work from Ben Eller, namely his "take" on Kill 'Em All in major keys and chords!

Vintage Rock Pod: 70. Pete Sears - Jefferson Starship / Rod Stewart Sep 04, 2022
    Show notes

My guest today has worked with some real legends over the years and has stories to tell about Rod Stewart, Jimi Hendrix and Grace Slick!

Pete Sears came through the British music scene in the 60's and played on Rod's first 4 studio albums (including the platinum selling 'Every Picture Tells A Story' and worldwide number 1 single 'Maggie May') and then became an ever present member of Jefferson Starship during their first incarnation (1974-1984). He worked with Hot Tuna for the best part of a decade too. He's back with a new album playing with Steamhammer, a band he first worked with in 1969! It's a great interview not to be missed!

See Hear Podcast Episode 100 - Amadeus Sep 03, 2022
    Show notes

Back in January 2014, Wendi Freeman, Tim Merrill and myself started a monthly podcast to look at the world of films about music and musicians (or any tenuous link to that world). Occasionally, we would talk about musicals that weren't actually about music, cos rules were meant to be broken. From episode 2, fellow music and film fan, Bernard Stickwell joined the team, an See Hear was on its way. The first film discussed on the show was a documentary about a musical genius who was just not appreciated by the wider population.....actually, naaaahhh.....we discussed Hated: GG Allin and the Murder Junkies.

We are truly happy 8 and a half years later to say Welcome to Episode 100 of See Hear Podcast.

If you're gonna commemorate a milestone, you have to go BIG. Bernie and I planned a discussion of a BIG film with two of the giants of the podcasting world. We look at Milos Forman's celebrated 1984 film, Amadeus with our great friends, Mike White of The Projection Booth (and quite a few other podcasts) and Will Smith of The Gentlemen's Guide To Midnite Cinema.

The film brought saw Forman return to Czechoslovakia. He hadn't been back following the Warsaw Pact Invasion of 1968. He'd already made some wonderful cinema as part of the Czech New Wave, but headed to America to continue to make films that made him known the world over. Much of his catalogue of films focused on stories showing the common man trying to overcome oppression by the state / corporation / aristocracy. In Amadeus, we get the story from the perspective of composer Antonio Salieri (brilliantly played by F. Murray Abraham) of how he set out to ruin Woilfgang Amadeus Mozart (a magnificent performance from Tom Hulce) because he was insanely and irrationally jealous of his ability to create perfect art.

Mike, Will, Bernie and I take the time to discuss classical music, the working class, religion, oppression by the state, diagetic vs non diagetic music, arrogance, jealousy, farting and playing too many notes.

Bernie and I are grateful to our great friends, Will and Mike for agreeing to add some class to our little show by bringing some wonderful conversation to the mix....and we nearly get away with no references to that Falco song....

You can hear Will along with his partner Sam U. Rai on The Gentlemen's Guide To Midnite Cinema at https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-gentlemens-guide-to-midnite-cinema/id291696146...They've been bringing class to the trash since 1977.

Mike has several podcasts you should hear (we talk about them all), but the flagship is The Projection Booth which you can check out at https://www.projectionboothpodcast.com/ Check out what he does and discover why he is the James Brown of podcasting.

Huge thanks go to our partner in crime still on sabbatical, Tim Merrill. We look forward to your return to the show sooner than later. We're saving Rattle and Hum for your return.

If you’ve been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a favourable review on iTunes and let your friends know that our show exists. If you don't enjoy the show, tell your adversaries to tune in. We don't care who listens.....
