Decibel Geek 433: The Pantheon of Rock Dec 06, 2020
    Show notes

We have a big announcement this week in an episode we're calling The Pantheon of Rock! In the nearly ten year history of Decibel Geek, we've been approached by several podcasting networks. While the offers were tempting, we've always shied away. However, we recently were approached by the Pantheon Podcast Network and, after a productive conference call and the possibilities of growing the show and offering more to our listeners, we've accepted their invite.

This week Pantheon Podcast Network founders Christian Swain and Peter Ferioli join us to talk about Decibel Geek joining the network. Additionally, you'll hear more about the network and the great collection of music podcasts that are a part of it including our friends at Rock and/or Roll, The Hustle, Should It Out Loudcast, and many more. The network also has great shows by rock author Martin Popoff and the legendary Pamela DesBarres among many others. Christian and Peter also share some entertaining stories of their musical background including concert memories.

Our involvement with Pantheon will not a change a thing for the Decibel Geek listeners. We still have free reign to do the show that we want to do and we look forward to working with them in the future to improve your experience as well as to interact with the other shows on the network. Check out all the great shows that Pantheon has to offer at http://pantheonpodcasts.com/

We hope you enjoy The Pantheon of Rock and SHARE with a friend!

What Difference Does It Make: John Lennon 1980 Dec 05, 2020
    Show notes

Like many significant moments in our lives, we remember where we were when we heard the devastating news about John Lennon. We tell our stories and then turn it over to a couple people that surrounded the event of December 8. Mark Goodman was on the air on New York radio station WPLJ on the evening of December 8, 1980 and photographer Bob Gruen was a family photographer for the Lennon family, capturing John and Yoko during the recording of Double Fantasy. We also talk with author Tim English. His new book "John Lennon: 1980 Playlist" does a deep dive into the music that captured John's attention in the year he created his new album after a five year self-imposed hiatus.

If you'd like to hear the music that inspired John we have a Spotify playlist for you.

We also have some giveaways you will want to enter.

We are a proud member of Pantheon Podcasts.

Muses: Linda Keith & Jimi - All is by my Side Dec 04, 2020
    Show notes

Continuing with our tribute to the women who loved Jimi Hendrix, this week we discuss 60’s model and Swinging London socialite Linda Keith and the portrayal of their relationship in the 2013 film Jimi: All Is By My Side

Daughter of the longest British radio presenter Alan Keith, Linda’s passion for music and her talent for spotting true talent was simply in her blood. Working as a model at the age of 17, she met Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards and the two became each others first loves.

It was while she was visiting Keith on tour in America that Linda spotted Jimi Hendrix, then playing at a dive bar in NYC. Linda knew a star when she saw one and made it her mission to get Jimi a record deal.

Tune in to hear their story as well as what we think of the John Ridley film Jimi: All Is By My Side.

You can also learn more about Jimi’s life with Kathy Etchingham in Episode 51 of Muses!

Rock and Roll Heaven: Listener Gifts - Doug Hopkins Dec 04, 2020
    Show notes

A song can have many levels... and Doug Hopkins wrote on all them.

WARNING: this episode contains trigger warnings for addiction and suicide.

At first, the songs of the Gin Blossoms were catchy and spirited. The lyrics, however, told the story of someone's pain. That pain was the life of Doug Hopkins with it's complexity, artistry and tragic end.

This week, we start our Listener Gift series with a tribute to the man behind some of the most popular songs of the early 90's. Doug's story had to be told, and his life remembered as a musician and human being.
