Rock Candy Ep. 143: Interview with Skeeter "Enoch" Thompson of Scream Dec 09, 2020
    Show notes

This week we have the pleasure to present our interview with Skeeter "Enoch" Thompson, known for his place in the DC hardcore punk scene in the band Scream (you may remember them as the group Dave Grohl was a part of before Nirvana). Back in the late 70's, Enoch joined up with his friends Franz, Kent, and Peter based around their common ground of music. Scream came soon after, the first band to release a full length album on Dischord records. We discuss the community of the DC punk scene in the 80's, hear the best "how I got my first guitar" story, ask his thoughts and feelings on the BLM movement, and so much more.

Make it Stop: Florida Georgia Line - Can't Say I Ain't Country with Susie Jeanne of BLOWW Dec 09, 2020
    Show notes

We're riding the honky tonk high speed rail all the way to the bank this week with the be-flannelled, bud' chuggin' y'all boys of Florida Georgia Line and their 2019 bro-country daggum opus "Can't Say I Ain't Country". Actual Country Gal Jeanne "Susie Newsie" Mansfield of BLOWW regales us with badass backwoods tales of burning couches and shooting flaming arrows in rural Missouri while jammin' to the sweet sounds of country music on the terrestrial radio. We learn that country livin' actually sounds pretty daggum fun while being swept away by the extremely goofy country concoctions of Florida and Georgia, and give them way too much credit for being pro-gun control and getting a hysterectomy. Don't worry, there's plenty of godawful trash like country-RnB, country rap, and other horrible hybrids that make this worthy of being Stopped, even though it's a pretty doggone good time. Hop in the Tesla-pickup hybrid and giddy up, because this one's a helluva ride! Part of the Pantheon Podcasts network.

    Show notes

In this week's episode, we talk to the splendid Kandia Crazy Horse — Zooming in from her apartment in "high Harlem" — about her career as a writer and singer-songwriter; about her abiding love for Southern rock; and about Rip It Up, her 2004 anthology of essays on Black rock from Little Richard to Lenny Kravitz. Along the way we discuss Donny Hathaway, Muscle Shoals, Mad Dogs & Englishmen, Love's Arthur Lee... and Kandia's terrific 2013 country-soul album Stampede.

We then go back to 1969 and hear the first of three clips from Joel Selvin's audio interview with the aforementioned Little Richard, prompting discussion of Mr. Penniman's pivotal role in the story of Black rock ('n'roll).

Mark then guides us through his new library highlights, including Roy Carr & Ian MacDonald debating David Bowie, Nick Tosches on Dolly Parton, Barry Cain on the blower to Sylvester, Sandy Robertson meeting L.A. legend Terry Melcher in London and Mark Rowland talking at length with Tom Waits. Barney mentions Andy Beckett on Peter Hook and Gary Pig Gold on the Shaggs, while Jasper rounds things off with remarks on Jason Gross' piece about Istanbul in the early noughties and Wyndham Wallace's 2010 review of Janelle Monáe performing at Berlin's Postbahnhof.

Many thanks to special guest Kandia Crazy Horse; visit her website at kandiacrazyhorse.com.

Performance Anxiety: Spencer Cullum (Miranda Lambert) Dec 08, 2020
    Show notes

This episode took me by surprise, I have to admit. I’m joined by pedal steel guitarist Spencer Cullum. Not only is he an in demand session player in Nashville (via London), but he’s been playing with Miranda Lambert for the past four years. Not being a huge country music fan, I really wasn’t sure what to expect. But what I got was one of the nicest conversations I’ve had this year. Spencer learned the instrument with the legendary BJ Cole, played Stones-y rock with Deadstring Brothers, & pushes the boundaries of pedal steel with his band Steelism. But he has a new album out called Spencer Cullum’s Coin Collection, which he likens to a cult, but with less death. It’s less country, more Meddle-era Pink Floyd. You should probably go buy it. Check him out on social media. Check us out @PerformanceAnx. Subscribe, rate, & review!

Crime in Music 58: I'm Aaron Carter and I Did NOT Blow a Seal! Dec 08, 2020
    Show notes

He is a child of Florida, thrust into the spotlight at a young age, this celebrity sibling found massive success with Nickelodeon and Disney, singing and acting to the joy of children and pre-teens around the world. He burst into fame by opening for his brother's band, the Backstreet Boys.

As a young man, he dated Hillary Duff and Lindsay Lohan at the same time! Besides girl problems, he has money problems. His parents mismanaged his earnings so badly, at the time of his 18th birthday, he received only $2 million dollars out of an estimated $200 million dollars he had earned to date and then we briefly discuss the Coogan Law. He files bankruptcy and owes the IRS $1.3 million in back taxes, but in only a year, he pays all of his outstanding debts.

Like a young Vanilla Ice, he enjoyed racing motorcycles and stars in the movie Supercross, which is said to be based on his life. He and his family get all real on the reality television show; House of Carters.

We breakdown the mysteries of Florida cuisine, why buyings is better than renting and how to be "the acoustic douche at the party." He's never done meth or crack, but he has beat Shaq. It's the magnificent musical minor, the little brother like no other, it's time for the Commiserate Chronicle of Aaron Carter!

The Imbalanced History Of Rock And Roll: The Night John Lennon Died - Happy Xmas (War Is Over) Dec 07, 2020
    Show notes

40 years after he was taken from us, John Lennon's murder still hurts those of us who "remember where we were." A few years ago, Ray did a short story telling of his experience surrounding December 8, 1980. It's been one of our blog's most popular pages. This week, we discuss, and we remember...

This special presentation includes a song that has always served to lift spirits disheartened by this dark anniversary. Happy Imbalanced Xmas...
