The Imbalanced History Of Rock And Roll: Hey, 2020!!! Piss Off!!! Dec 28, 2020
    Show notes

One year ago, no one could have predicted what 2020 would become: a pure survival, death match marathon! The tumultuous year that has just passed may be moving into our rearview mirror, but the effects are still here (kind of like Covid-19)! The pandemic, social and political strife, plus the strain of losing Neil Peart and Eddie Van Halen in the same year would be more than enough to deal with in any year.

2020, you've been one completely fucked up year, and we're glad to see you go!!! You've been a catastrophe! #MoreFunIn2021

This week, we look back at a year of constant upheaval, change and loss!

Let's all hope for a better new year...

Listen to this cool episode, and then get caught up here!!!

Is It Rolling Bob? Talking Dylan: Edward Docx Dec 27, 2020
    Show notes

Edward Docx (novelist/screenwriter/journalist) is a hyper-articulate defence witness for some of Bob’s least understood albums: Street-Legal, Infidels, Empire Burlesque and Together Through Life. “There is no uninteresting Dylan album. He opens his veins and says "This is what it’s like for me now."” How passionate is Ed Docx about Bob Dylan? After recording the podcast, we continued our digital discussion for another hour.

Here’s Ed on Street-Legal: “It’s his Bosworth. After the battle, there’s blood and corpses and death and everything’s gone wrong. But somehow, he picks himself up and starts to sing! I don’t think he ever dared go there again. It was so bleak.” His reaction to accidentally discovering I And I at age 14: “I thought: what great human being has written this down? I couldn’t believe the depth and strength and beauty and layered wonder.” Join us for our longest - and possibly most articulate – episode thus far.

Edward Docx is half Russian on his mother’s side. He was born in the North East and grew up in the North West, went to school in Manchester and then on to Christ’s College, Cambridge, where he read English Literature. He started writing fiction when he was in his teens and completed three unpublished novels before The Calligrapher was published in 2003. His other novels are Self Help (longlisted for the Booker Prize/winner Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize), The Devil’s Garden and Let Go My Hand. He is associate editor of Prospect Magazine. His journalism appears in most leading European and American newspapers and magazines. In addition, Ed works extensively in television and radio and teaches on the Guardian’s Master Class series on fiction writing.

Let It Roll: ICMYI - Michael Bloomfield, Monterey Pop, Electric Flag, Al Kooper's SuperSession and Tragedy Dec 27, 2020
    Show notes

Host Nate Wilcox and Ed Ward spoke in 2018 about Ed's book Michael Bloomfield: The Rise and Fall of an American Guitar Hero. Ed tells Nate about The Electric Flag, Bloomfield's attempt to build a "supergroup" incorporating horns and drummer Buddy Miles. The band's struggles with direction and drugs. Bloomfield's part in Al Kooper's successful "SuperSession" album and Bloomfield's withdrawal from the rock music rat race and tragic passing.

    The Band: A History - Shangri-La Dec 27, 2020
    Show notes

“Nobody’s done what Bob Dylan’s done for us over the years. He helped Rick and Richard write those songs and was part of our workshop. Bob Dylan knew that The Band was not in great shape, and he wanted to help us out of the sense of goodness he felt for us.”

Pressure was mounting on The Band who hadn't put out a critically acclaimed album in some years, nor were they getting on personally like the once had. With the group calling California home, and setting up in Malibu they established a new clubhouse, Shangri-La, hoping to recreate some of the magic they once had in upstate New York.

Tour problems were also mounting, the drugs and alcohol were becoming an issue again and The Band’s headlining gigs were not as successful as they had hoped. While The Band wasn’t having much personal success, on their own they were keeping busy. Rick and Levon worked with Neil Young on his album “On The Beach”, Robbie had a third child and Garth met his future wife.

See Hear 80: Brent Wilson - Director of Streetlight Harmonies Dec 26, 2020
    Show notes

With all the obsession the media makes of the rock era (i.e. the 60s onwards) it's all to easy to forget about the early days of rock and roll. The casual listener may think of Elvis, Chuck, Buddy or Little Richard – important parts of rock and roll history, obviously, but what's often forgotten about are the great vocal harmony groups. Groups like The Ravens, The Flamingos, The Orioles, The Dells, as well as the iconic Drifters and The Platters need to be revered as much as any of the greats in rock and roll history. Without them, the history of rock music would not only be poorer, but much of what came after the fifties (like Motown) would either not exist or at least be very different.

Welcome to episode 80 of See Hear.

Brent Wilson has directed a wonderful new documentary on the history of Doo Wop music, how it changed social history in the US, and how it influenced the singers over the decades after its heyday. The film is called Streetlight Harmonies, and he took the time to talk about the film as well as why doo wop was so important to teenagers of the 50s some of whom grew into social activists in the 60s.

Sadly, neither Tim nor Bernie were available for this discussion, but I was very excited to welcome Peter Merret, host of the PBS-FM doo wop show, The Malt Shop Hop, to help bring some musical context and ask some great questions of Brent. My gratitude to both of these gentlemen for their time and expertise. I loved doing this episode and I hope you'll enjoy listening.

You can find the film at https://vimeo.com/ondemand/streetlightharmonies or iTunes.

If you're in Melbourne, you can tune into The Malt Shop Hop every Wednesday at 11am on 106.7 PBS-FM. Outside of Melbourne, you can tune in via pbsfm.org.au or the PBS app.

This episode marks the 7 year mark of doing See Hear Podcast. We never imagined there'd be enough music related films to discuss when we started in January 2014. Turns out we can't keep up with the new releases. It's great that we have this forum for a monthly discussion about two important parts of our lives – music and movies. On behalf of Tim, Bernie and myself, thanks to everyone who continues to tune in.

If you’ve been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a favourable review on iTunes and let your friends know that our show exists. If you don't enjoy the show, please tell your friends to tune in anyway.
