    Show notes

It's the holiday season and let me tell you, Youngsters, the boys are MERRY in this one. Mike brings some pecan pie and it sets our spirits bright for a good fireside chat about Weld and Arc. We talk about the Horse, of course. Mike brings up David Briggs making someone cry and Neil putting a boot into the ass of one of his band members. The boys talk about edibles and live music. We compare versions of songs with earlier versions. We eat more pie. It's a good way to end 2020.

    Love That Album Ep. 141: Sound As Ever - Australian Indie 1990 – 1999 Dec 30, 2020

Love That Album Podcast Episode 141 - Sound As Ever: Australian Indie 1990 – 1999

The 1990s were musically diverse, but are often recalled as the moment that the so-called Seattle sound kicked down your door and got you to include its flannel shirt in your next wash. Gone were the horrible Linn drums of the 1980s....guitars, bass and drums were back. What was previously “alternative” now forced its way into the mainstream.

Welcome to episode 141 of Love That Album Podcast.

It cannot be argued – Australian music was in a very healthy state during the nineties, definitely from an artistic perspective. People loved to go hear live music and support local bands – the pub scene was carrying on a long tradition from previous decades of providing stages for musicians to do their thing....despite the disgusting disease that was poker machines being allowed into Victorian pubs early in the decade making some venues less musician friendly.

Scott Thurling started up a label called Popboomerang in the early 2000s to support the musicians he loved. He spent a large part of the previous decade seeing as many bands as he could physically get to. It comes as a surprise to no one that his knowledge of Australian independent music from this period is second to none (as is his record and CD collection).

Early on in the pandemic lockdown in Victoria, Scott and Jane Gazzo started a Facebook group dedicated to those indie bands. The group exploded with punters and musicians all willing to share stories, photos and paraphernalia. Wanting to expand the collective experience, they hit upon a plan to get as many previously unreleased songs from bands of the period and release a CD. In 2020, they released TWO albums filled to the brim with songs previously lying around gathering dust.

My great friend and previous LTA presenter, David Blom joins me to talk with Scott about Sound As Ever: Australian Indie 1990 – 1999, Volumes 1 and 2. We talk about the era, the politics, the culture, the venues, and most importantly, the songs on these anthologies.

Join the SAE group (it doesn't matter if you were there at the time or even know these bands) at https://www.facebook.com/groups/SoundAsEver.

If you’d consider writing an iTunes review I’d be immensely grateful. However, it’d be even better if you told a friend about the podcast and Pantheon – at a (socially distanced) barbecue, over coffee (on Skype), on social media….whatever way you choose, consider me grateful.

Make It Stop: Worst Music of 2020 Dec 30, 2020
    Show notes

2020 is coming to an end, may it rot and burn in hell, and as expected an unimaginably awful year brought us a slew of unimaginably awful albums. Mike and Heather can barely keep it together as they lament the slow death of culture and the creeping Post Malone-ification of all music. Everything sucks and it's going to suck forever. Genres become meaningless as all music melts into one big endless lo fi hip hop beat to study to Youtube stream. Personal taste becomes homogenized across the board by algorithms. It's a hellscape all around, and now we bring you the 10 worst songs from the 10 worst albums bestowed up on us by this cursed year. Some real heavy hitters here. Stoppie discretion is advised.

The Hook Rocks!: New Music Spotlight - Interview With Chris Foust From Foust Dec 29, 2020

Coming from Music City the band Foust merges the elements of grunge with a modern rock sound. Their debut EP Revival is filled with great songs such as "The Fountain" & "The Ocean". I had a chance to chat with lead singer and guitarist Chris Foust about the current state of rock music, the importance on having thick skin while being in the music business, and much more. I hope you will enjoy this conversation as much as I did!

Rock N Roll Librarian: Much Things to Say: The Oral History of Bob Marley Dec 29, 2020
    Show notes

In this episode of the Rock n Roll Librarian Shelley and Christian discuss the book So Much Things to Say: The Oral History of Bob Marley (2017).

Roger Steffens, a respected historian and a leading Marley expert, has woven interviews of more than 75 friends, relatives, and lovers, music associates (including original Wailers Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer), into a rich testimony of the life of the reggae king―the full, inside account of how a boy from the slums of Kingston, Jamaica, became a cultural icon and inspiration to millions around the world. Over four decades of interviews tell dramatic, little-known stories about the writing of his beloved songs, his musical development and early sessions with the Wailers, and relationships with Rita Marley and Cindy Breakspeare. It also delves into controversies and mysteries, including the harrowing assassination attempt at 56 Hope Road in Kingston, his defiant performance two nights later with a bullet lodged in his arm, and the discovery and (mis)treatment of his cancer and ultimate tragic death.

The intimate voices and frankness of their revelations offer multiple perspectives on key events in the reggae icon’s life. Steffens voice guides the narrative, but So Much Things to Say is a collective accomplishment, a transformative slice of music history.
