Decibel Geek Podcast: The Best & Worst of Motley Crue 1990 & Beyond - Ep504 Nov 11, 2022
    Show notes

Every now and then we like to challenge ourselves. Our Best & Worst series has become a listener-favorite. Many times, we focus on the glory years of a band. But, NOT today!

For as massive as Motley Crue was in the 1980's, the years beyond that have been a study in contrasts. After a decade of churning out memorable, fist-pumping arena rock anthems, the new decade of the 90's was a battle for the legendary Hollywood band.

The 1990's started strong with the release of 'Decade of Decadence.' However, the dismissal of front man Vince Neil would signify a big fall from the top. The self-titled 1994 album showed off a new side to the band with their new addtion, John Corabi. However, commercial success would elude them. This would force the return of Vince Neil and an album that did more to confuse fans than excite them in 'Generation Swine.'

Since then, only one full release 'Saints of Los Angeles' has been issued along with several greatest hits compilations, soundtracks, and singles that provided a smattering of new material.

In this episode, we go through all of these releases including the one-off singles of recent years. Did we find some diamonds in the rough or will this be tough sledding? You'll have to listen to find out.

We hope you enjoy (as best you can) The Best & Worst of Motley Crue 1990 & Beyond and SHARE with a friend!

He now runs Sparkle Plenty Records, and one of the first orders of business is to finally give a proper re-release of Lions & Ghosts debut album, Velvet Kiss, Lick Of The Lime. Rock is Lit: Jennifer Haupt, Author of 'Come As You Are' Nov 10, 2022
    Show notes

Jennifer Haupt is here to talk about her new novel, ‘Come As You Are’. Set against a backdrop of Seattle in the early '90s, ‘Come As You Are’ is a compelling love story and family drama that addresses the question: Can we alter our dreams and stories from the past to create a better future for our children?

In the second half of the show, we’re joined by two giants of the real Seattle grunge world: music journalist Charles R. Cross, author of the award-winning 2001 biography on Kurt Cobain, ‘Heavier Than Heaven’, and Nabil Ayers, co-founder of Seattle’s iconic Sonic Boom Records store and author of the new memoir ‘My Life in the Sunshine’. Charles and Nabil share their memories of and insight into that pivotal moment in music history.

    Jennifer:

    • The significance of the title and Nirvana, particularly Kurt Cobain, in the novel
    • How Jennifer depicted drug addiction, anxiety, and grief in the story
    • The death of Jennifer’s own sister and how that informed the novel
    • What music, especially the music of Nirvana, means to the main characters
    • Music as a religion; Kurt Cobain as a god-figure in the novel
    • Jennifer’s brush with celebrities: Dizzy Gillespie, author Wally Lamb
    • How seeing live music helps disparate people bond
    • What “Smells Like Teen Spirit” means to Jennifer

    Charles

    • The difference between Kurt Cobain’s public and private personas and his attitude toward fame
    • Kurt’s struggles with drug addiction, mental illness, and gastrointestinal problems
    • Kurt’s family history of suicide and his own many suicide attempts
    • How Charles found out Kurt had died
    • Why the ‘Nevermind’ album is great
    • Why naysayers of Nirvana should listen to their MTV Unplugged performance
    • When Charles first heard “Smells Like Teen Spirit”
    • The genius of Nirvana’s music and their impact on the culture

    Nabil

    • Nabil’s new memoir, ‘My Life in the Sunshine’, about trying to connect with his father, funk, soul, and jazz legend Roy Ayers
    • Seattle in the early 1990s: music, record stores, clubs, atmosphere in general at that time (“Everyone here just looks like they’re in a band”)
    • Sub Pop Records
    • Bands Nabil saw play live in Seattle clubs that became grunge legends, like Mudhoney, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Nirvana
    • Tales of when Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell used to shop at the record store where Nabil worked
    • OK Hotel Nirvana show Nabil saw when Nirvana played “Smells Like Teen Spirit” for the first time
    • Opening Sonic Boom Records in Seattle in the ‘90s and interacting with the many great bands that frequented and played at the store

Rock is Lit Vault Bonus Episode: Charles R. Cross Uncut Interview About Kurt Cobain Nov 10, 2022
    Show notes

Episode 10 of Rock is Lit features Jennifer Haupt’s novel ‘Come As You Are’, a story set against the backdrop of the Seattle grunge scene of the early 1990s.

Joining Jennifer and me on that episode to share their memories of that pivotal moment in music history to add real-world context to Jennifer’s novel are Nabil Ayers, co-founder of Seattle’s iconic record store Sonic Boom and author of the memoir ‘My Life in the Sunshine’, about his efforts to connect with his father, the funk, soul, and jazz legend Roy Ayers; and Charles R. Cross, author of the award-winning 2001 biography on Kurt Cobain, ‘Heavier Than Heaven’.

My conversation with Charles went on much longer than I’d anticipated when we began talking, and I could only fit a fraction of it in the regular episode. What Charles had to say about Kurt Cobain was so fascinating and astute, based on his extensive research into Kurt’s life and career, Charles’s extraordinary access to Kurt’s private papers via Kurt’s widow, Courtney Love, and Charles’s unique position as the editor of the Seattle music magazine ‘The Rocket’ before, during, and after the Seattle grunge explosion of the early ‘90s, a position that put him in direct contact with Kurt Cobain several times, that I decided to make the whole uncut interview with Charles available here.

There are short outtakes from my interviews with Jennifer and Nabil in the Vault as well, which I hope you’ll listen to. But for now, light a candle, drop the needle on track three of ‘Nevermind’, and come as you are to hear Charles R. Cross talk about the genius and demons of Nirvana’s front man and primary songwriter, Kurt Cobain.

    KEY QUOTES AND TEASERS:

What was Kurt’s relationship with Courtney Love like? What did Kurt think of the Weird Al parody of “Smells Like Teen Spirit? Why does Charles think Nirvana never could have happened in the Facebook era? Listen to the uncut interview to find out why.

Charles: “[Nirvana] weren’t great at the start. They were not the best band in Seattle in 1988, 1989, and 1990. They were the best band in Seattle in 1991.”

Charles: “Kurt’s greatest gift is that when he sang, you felt like he was singing to you.”

MUSIC AND MEDIA THAT APPEAR IN THE EPISODE IN ORDER OF APPEARANCE:

    1. “Come As You Are” by Nirvana
    2. Clip of Kurt Cobain talking about his lyrics
    3. MTV announcement of Kurt’s death, April 8, 1994
    4. “Lithium” by Nirvana
    5. “Serve the Servants” by Nirvana
    6. Clips of artists praising Nirvana and Kurt: Jewel, Henry Rollins, Robert Plant
    7. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana
    8. “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” performed by Nirvana
    9. Michael Stipe: “Kurt, we miss you.”
