Vintage Rock Pod 56: Don McLean - American Pie Mar 15, 2022
    Show notes

American Pie has become a part of the fabric of America. Don McLean joins me this week to talk about the 50th anniversary of the album/song and to give his wider feelings on a awful lot of things. He talks about working on new material, being watched by the FBI, those early days of his career in the 60's with Pete Seeger and his family lineage which winds back here to a small Scottish island!

American Pie was named as one of the five greatest songs of the twentieth century by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The song entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2003 with Don himself being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004. His songs have been covered by such a wide and diverse array of artists from Elvis Presley to Madonna, Perry Como to current superstar Drake – while Tupac cited his love for Vincent.

His song Tapestry was the inspiration behind the launch of the environmental group Greenpeace and the royals Harry and Meghan Markle used his song And I Love You So as the theme for their wedding too!

He’s the first to admit in the interview that he’s not a people person, he’s a loner, he doesn’t like small talk – but he sure tells his stories to me.

You'll also hear my Top 5 Don McLean songs - let me know your Top 5, email vintagerockpod@gmail.com and I'll read your comments out on next weeks episode!

The Band: A History - Interview with Jim Weider Mar 15, 2022
    Show notes

The Band: A History sits down with former guitarist of The Band Jim Weider. Jim joined The Band in 1985 and remained their lead guitarist until the group dissolved in 2000 after Rick Danko's death. Known as one of the premiere Fender Telecaster players in the world, outside of The Band, Weider has played with Robbie Dupree, Dr. John, Graham Parker, Keith Richards, Scotty Moore and Bob Weir. Weider was also a member of the Levon Helm Band from 2009 until Levon's death in 2012 and has since created The Weight Band, which originated inside the barn of Levon Helm in 2012 when Jim Weider and Randy Ciarlante (former members of The Band), were performing "Songs of The Band" with Garth Hudson, Jimmy Vivino and Byron Isaacs. The Weight Band is getting ready to release their second album "Shines Like Gold" on April 1, 2022. Ska Boom: Musical Youth Mar 14, 2022
    Show notes

Welcome to Ska Boom Stories which is the audio companion to my book Ska Boom: An American Ska & Reggae Oral History now available from DiWulf Publishing and Amazon.

The goal of the Ska Boom podcast is talk about ska with an emphasis on American ska history and the bands, musicians and people who have helped to create and influence a uniquely American version of ska and reggae that spans from the late 70s until today.

Like me, you’ve probably heard 'Pass the Dutchie' many times. And it probably makes you smile and dance. I never get tired of hearing it. What isn’t well-known is that MY trace their origins all the way back to the iconic 60s Jamaican rocksteady act The Techniques. What also isn’t very well know is the very sad story behind their ride from obscurity to fame and back again in just 15 months in the early 80s when the members were all still young teenagers.

Ska Boom is hosted/produced by Marc Wasserman and co-produced/engineered by Rob George and appears on the Pantheon Podcasts.

Imbalanced History Of Rock And Roll: Stardog Champion: The Story Of Andrew Wood And Mother Love Bone! Mar 14, 2022
    Show notes

He Was Landrew The Love God. He Was Captain Hi-Tops. This is "Stardog Champion: The Story Of Andrew Wood And Mother Love Bone!"

They say that if you knew Andy, you know why his was a special energy. Amidst the grind of The Seattle Syndrome, his light outshone most others in his orbit. Mother Love Bone was to be his vessel, following the merging of parts of Malfunkshun and Green River. But The Fates intervened...

The Imbalanced Brothers tell the tale, in their own way.
