Shout It Out Loudcast: "The Hotter Than Hell Tour" Mar 12, 2022
    Show notes

This week Tom & Zeus review the 1975-1975 "Hotter Than Hell Tour." This is SIOL's 5th KISS tour reviewed. This tour was a continuation of the "KISS Tour" which was right after the debut album. The tour promoted KISS' second album Hotter Than Hell. KISS headlined some events and opened others, but they had moved up from "Special Guest" bookings. The tour added new legendary tracks from the new album and the band played everywhere and anywhere.

As usual, the guys breakdown the costumes, stage, set list and overall tour. They then rank the costumes, stage, set list and overall tour against the previous 4 tours reviewed so far.

This episode also previews this years, upcoming Shout It Out Loudcast KISS Madness Tournament. Listen to find out what the original and annual KISS tournament from SIOL is all about!

Finally, the guys also announce the "BIG NEW" they have been hinting at for over a year.

AllMusicPodcasts 100: "Girls To The Front: The True Story of the Riot Grrrl Revolution" with Sara Marcus Mar 11, 2022
    Show notes

Girls to the Front is the epic, definitive history of the Riot Grrrl movement — the radical feminist punk uprising that exploded into the public eye in the 1990s, altering America’s gender landscape forever. This was not just a movement but an era of pissed-off girls with no patience for sexism and no intention of keeping quiet.

Author Sara Marcus joins us to talk about her own memories as a Riot Grrrl front-liner and chronicles the story of punk bands like Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, and Heavens to Betsy and their effect on today’s culture. Tune in.

Decibel Geek 469: On Assignment - Marvelous 3 Ready Sex Go Mar 11, 2022
    Show notes

This week we debut a new theme with On Assignment for the Marvelous 3 album 'Ready Sex Go.' Here's how it works. Each time, we seek out a fellow podcaster that we respect to assign us an album to review. We give the album several spins, in our own time, and then reconvene with our guest and grade the album on a A-F scale; going track by track through the album.

For this inaugural edition of On Assignment, we're joined by Jay Scott of The Hook Rocks podcast. As a fellow Pantheon network member, Jay's show has steadily climbed in popularity and regularly produces great episodes for the musically obsessed as well as fantastic interviews. We asked Jay to assign us an album that he loves and he chose the third, and final, Marvelous 3 album 'Ready Sex Go.' Released in 2000, the album completely flew under the radar of most rock fans despite getting modest airplay with the single 'Sugarbuzz.'

In this episode everyone shares their memories of Marvelous 3, how they discovered the music, and their links to Butch Walker's solo material and Southgang. We, then, go through all the tracks from 'Ready Sex Go' and give our thoughts as well as our letter grades.

This album is loaded from front to back with power pop rock greatness. The hooks, the melodies, the production, the playing and more are highlighted. If you haven't checked out Marvelous 3, Southgang, or Butch Walker's solo material, we highly recommend you do so.

So, what do YOU think? Did we pass the assignment? What letter grades would you give these songs? Let us know in the comments. We hope you enjoy On Assignment: Marvelous 3 Ready Sex Go and SHARE with a friend!

Rock's Backpages 122: David Dalton on The Beach Boys + The Beatles + Charles Manson Mar 11, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode we welcome the legendary — and highly amusing — David Dalton to join us all the way from his rural retreat in upstate New York.

We start by comparing our shocked reactions to Vladimir Putin's horrific invasion of Ukraine before asking David how he moved to America from England in 1961. He tells us about his mid-'60s adventures as a photographer of British Invasion acts like the Animals — with assistance from a pre-Beatle Linda McCartney — and then about his mid-stream switch to profiles of James Brown and Janis Joplin for Jann Wenner's nascent Rolling Stone.

We revisit the award-winning 1970 Stone piece David co-wrote about Charles Manson and the Family, hearing along the way about Manson's connections with the Beach Boys. This leads almost seamlessly into clips from the late Andy Gill's 1988 audio interview with Dr. Eugene Landy, the shrink who "saved" Brian Wilson only to abuse his professional trust by inveigling his way into the singer's music and business affairs.

We then return to the horrors of Manson when we ask David about the influence of Beatles tracks on the man who orchestrated the Tate-LaBianca killings. Our guest reminisces about working with Rolling Stone colleague Jonathan Cott on Get Back, the only book the Beatles ever commissioned, and we discuss with him the Fab Four's unhappy last days in the context of Peter Jackson's recent documentary of the same name.

After David brings his American story full circle with memories of hanging out with Andy Warhol in 1961, Mark talks us through newly-added library pieces on Muddy Waters (1958), Brian Epstein (1963), the Who (1967) and Jerome "Doc" Pomus (1982), while Barney quotes from a review of a 1990 book about Eastern Bloc rock and Jasper mentions 2012 pieces about Kendrick Lamar and Green Day's American Idiot musical...

Many thanks to special guest David Dalton; find his excellent biographies at any good bookshop and read his writing on RBP.

Pieces discussed: David Dalton, Charles Manson, Eugene Landy audio, The Beatles, Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, The Who, Brian Epstein, Johnny Mercer, "Doc" Pomus, Kendrick Lamar, Green Day musical, Rock around the Bloc.

No Filler: Jangly, Murky, Mysterious - How R.E.M's Murmur Ushered In The Alt Rock Wave Mar 10, 2022
    Show notes

We chat about R.E.M's debut record, Murmur and try to imagine what it was like to hear this style of rock for the first time in 1983. Hearing it now, R.E.M's mix of jangly 60s pop and folk rock with garage rock attitude sounds so normal and common after the band's influence shaping the sound of countless rockers for nearly four decades. But at the time, critics knew it was special. So much so that Rolling Stone put it at its best album of the year, beating out Michael Jackson's Thriller, Police's Synchronicity, and U2's War, to name a few. The next iteration of rock was here, and R.E.M. was the flagbearer.
