Imbalanced History Of Rock And Roll: When Bowie Met Bolan Mar 21, 2022
    Show notes

A while back, Ray saw this Urban Myths "tru-ish" short film, "When Bowie Met Bolan" on Showtime. He mentioned it to Markus, but (despite MG's love of both singers) he was initially lukewarm about doing an episode. Yet, here it is.

Time goes by, memories gets foggy, but we are sure that David and Marc met early in their respective careers, and shared a manager. The rest is fun, unexpected, and provides a glimpse of these two future stars. Markus and Ray give an overview then work their way through the story in this week's episode.

The Ugly American Werewolf in London: Deep Purple - Machine Head at 50 Mar 21, 2022
    Show notes

In 1972, Deep Purple wanted to come off the road and settle into an atmosphere that would allow them to stretch out creatively and better capture their live sound. They headed to Lake Geneva, Switzerland to take residence in a casino right after Frank Zappa played one more gig there. The rest is rock n roll lore captured in the all time classic Smoke on the Water. Containing other radio staples like Highway Star and Space Truckin along with killer album cuts like Never Before and Lazy, this is the album that made it possible for Purple to continue to this day. We discuss the lineup, the relationships within and The wolf's hopes to catch them in London this fall live. Machine Head is 50 and we don't know a world without it!

Performance Anxiety: Side Projects - Musique Concrète With hackedepicciotto & Dead Space Chamber Music Mar 20, 2022
    Show notes

On this episode of Side Projects, I am joined by Alexander Hacke and Danielle de Picciotto of hackedepicciotto and Ellen Southern and Tom Bush from Dead Space Chamber Music to talk about Musique Concrète. We discuss what it is and how each of them discovered the genre and how it has influenced the music they make. They’ve each used some strange instruments to create their own Musique Concrète, including a jet turbine and a serrated knife on a stone. It really is amazing how repurposing objects to make Musique Concrète can actually give them a new life. And sometimes Musique Concrète is created by accident, like when a flute has the wrong mouthpiece. And other times, repairing an instrument can actually ruin the qualities that you want for Musique Concrète. Recording the music can be part of the process of creating the desired sound. But you have to be ready because sometimes you only get one take. Follow hackedepicciotto on the socials @hackedepicciotto. Follow Dead Space Chamber Music @deadspacechambermusic. Pick up The Silver Threshold & The Black Hours on Bandcamp. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. You can support the show at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety or buy merch at performanceanx.threadless.com. Now let’s get into some found sounds with Musique Concrète on Performance Anxiety on the Pantheon Podcast Network.

Long May You Young 71: Thin Lizzy - Thin Lizzy (w/ Will Martin) Mar 18, 2022
    Show notes

A Neil Young podcast walks into a pub and talks about Thin Lizzy...

It's Saint Patrick's Day! So we're taking a quick break from Neil's catalogue and diving into some good old Irish rock n' roll - Thin Lizzy's first self titled album. You're probably asking yourself if a Neil Young podcast can just decide to do an episode about something not really Neil related at all and the answer is we can do whatever we want.

Mike's out for this one, so our good pal Will Martin is taking his place! We talk about the formation of Thin Lizzy. The range of this album. Russ is mad that he slept on it for so long. We try and figure out who Ireland's Neil Young is. We geek the hell out over Phil's bass playing and Brian's drumming. It's a hell of a time. Truly.

Thanks to Will Martin for filling in for Mike!
