Rock's Backpages 123: Joe Carducci on SST Records + Henry Rollins + Paul Nelson Mar 25, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode we invite SST legend Joe Carducci to join us — all the way from Las Vegas — and talk about his life and career in music from the mid-'70s to the present day.

We hear about Joe's childhood in Illinois, his move to L.A. in 1976 and his first pieces for Eurock and anarchist rag The Match! From there we learn about his forming record distributor Systematic in Portland; his working with Rough Trade US in Berkeley; and his helming of Black Flag's SST label from 1981 to 1986. Following his reminiscences of SST producer Spot and photographer Naomi Peterson, we hear clips from a 1994 audio interview with Henry Rollins — including the former Black Flag frontman's thoughts on his old band and its influence on the recently-deceased Kurt Cobain. Joe also discusses his controversial 1990 book Rock & the Pop Narcotic, as well as the legendary Sing Out!/Circus/Rolling Stone writer Paul Nelson and the vital importance of his Little Sandy Review fanzine (1959-1967).

After paying our respects to Timmy ('Why Can't We Live Together') Thomas and NME/Daily Mirror journalist Gavin Martin, we hear from Mark about pieces on Country Joe & the Fish, Bette Midler and the Sex Pistols' famous Screen On The Green gig; from Jasper about Chicago's Tortoise and French pop; and from Barney about Little Feat's Lowell George, Texan "artlaw" Boyd Elder and Canadian rock'n'roller Jack Scott.

Finally we hear a third clip from the Rollins audio, in which Henry harks back to his teenage infatuation with Ted Nugent.

Many thanks to special guest Joe Carducci; find his blog at newvulgate.blogspot.com and his books, including Rock & the Pop Narcotic, in all good bookshops.

Pieces discussed: Meat Puppets, The Descendents, Black Flag/SST, Henry Rollins audio, Paul Nelson, Timmy Thomas, Gavin Martin, Stiff Little Fingers, Bette Midler, Nirvana, Rolling Stones, Country Joe & the Fish, Sex Pistols/Slits, Tortoise, French pop, Lowell George, Boyd Elder and Jack Scott.

Prisoners of Rock and Roll 37: Return of the King - The Elvis Comeback Special Mar 24, 2022
    Show notes

By 1968, Elvis Presley he had been out of the music spotlight for a decade. He had only performed once since getting out of the army in 1960, and most of his time was spent turning out dozens of b-level movies that left him frustrated with his career. Then his manager and infamous jerk Colonel Tom Parker pitched an idea to NBC to have Elvis do a TV special. Presley took the stage in a black leather outfit and reminded EVERYONE that he was the King of Rock and Roll.

In this week’s episode, we’re taking a close look at Elvis’ 68 Comeback Special. We’re going to talk about his career before and after the event, play some of our favorite clips, and discuss why this show was such an important moment in rock and roll.

See Hear 95: Summer of Soul (Or When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised) Mar 24, 2022
    Show notes

In the year 1969, Richard Nixon became president of the United States, James Earl Ray plead guilty to the murder of Dr Martin Luther King, multiple planes are hijacked to Cuba, the Stonewall Rebellion took place, and the war in Vietnam raged on.

….but there was an incredible music festival that took place for the third time in Mt Morris Park in Harlem, that for years no one recalled.

Welcome to See Hear Podcast episode 95.

Tony Lawrence was a lounge singer who had a vision to bring some joy and positivity to Harlem. The African American population had undergone poverty and police brutality. Lawrence assembled the first Harlem Cultural Festival in 1967, but the lineup of 1967 was truly amazing. Started a full two months before Woodstock, this festival held over a series of weekends over the summer featured the likes of Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, The Staple Singers, The Fifth Dimension, B.B. King and many others. 40 hours of festival footage was shot for local TV networks, but shortly after, the festival and its footage were forgotten by most – and Woodstock became ubiquitous in popular myth as the cultural event of a generation.

In 2021, drummer, DJ and music director Questlove released the film “Summer of Soul (Or When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised)” about that event featuring much of that magnificent footage.....but this is not a concert film in the conventional sense. There are interviews with musicians and those who attended the shows – both from the time and contemporary. To contextualise the period the show was born into, we get news clips about the moon landing, poverty, radicalism, Martin Luther King's assassination and a lot more. This footage is not slotted in as an afterthought – it goes hand in hand with the music, and is a masterpiece of editing.

Tim was not available, but Bernie and Maurice were joined by film writer, broadcaster, and commentator Emma Westwood to discuss the wonder of the event – both musically and politically. The film is completely worthy of the praise and hype. We hope to convince you that you need to see this – in a cinema or on a streaming service.

Our gratitude goes to Emma who brought an amazing conversation to the show (no surprises there). She will be back – make no mistake. Her knowledge and enthusiasm really made the show. You can find details of her work at https://emmawestwood.net/ She will soon release a book she's curated on James Whale's “Bride of Frankenstein”........Mmmmm, book GOOOOOOOOOOD.

If you’ve been enjoying the show, please consider giving us a favourable review on iTunes and let your friends know that our show exists. If you don't enjoy the show, tell your adversaries to tune in. We don't care who listens.....

Is It Rolling, Bob? Talking Dylan: Curtis Stigers Mar 23, 2022
    Show notes

Singer, songwriter and saxophonist Curtis Stigers tells us true stories with a cast of characters including Van Morrison, Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan. A fan from way back (“Bob is the perfect creation. He’s an art form in himself”), his jazzy cover versions include Things Have Changed (“people go nuts for that song. Their heads explode”). A committed conversationalist with a huge wealth of musical knowledge, Curtis has strong opinions about Shawn Colvin, Jim Croce, The Carter Family, Neil Diamond, Jimmie Rodgers, Frank Sinatra, Bertolt Brecht and Larry Klein (who produced both Joni Mitchell and Curtis). His cover of Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right “always lights up the room”, he says. We feel the same about Mr. Stigers.

Born in Los Angeles, Curtis Stigers grew up in Boise, Idaho. His interest in music began as a teen when he played in punk and blues bands. He moved to New York to pursue rock music but attracted label attention as the saxophonist/vocalist of a jazz trio, signing a deal with Arista and releasing his self-titled first album in 1991 (the multi-platinum album included the Billboard Top Ten single I Wonder Why). He contributed a cover of (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding to the soundtrack of The Bodyguard, which spent 20 consecutive weeks at Number 1 on the Billboard album chart. Curtis’s third album, Brighter Days, featured appearances by Jackson Browne and Benmont Tench. From 2001, he began to concentrate on jazz albums, including Real Emotional and Lost In Dreams. In 2012, he released the country-tinged album Let’s Go Out Tonight, featuring covers of songs by artists like Steve Earle and Richard Thompson. One More For The Road, a live salute to the Sinatra At The Sands album was another big success. Curtis is currently touring the UK, promoting his new album This Life.

The Age Old Question: Is "Free As A Bird" The Beatles' Most Impressive Hit? Mar 23, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode, Rich and Clint make the case that "Free As A Bird," which the Beatles released in 1995, is, in fact, the band's most impressive hit. After years of acrimony and discord, after the tragic murder of John Lennon, the Fab Four were able to work together again on a "new" song. And who made it possible to bring the band back together? Yoko. Here's the story of how the song emerged and why it should be considered a gem in the Beatles' remarkable catalog.
