    Ep 123 - Tickling 100 (Sean Graham) Sep 25, 2017

    After Farley sets the table for the show, at (6:38) we reprise our Northern Lights discussion. At (12:11) We are joined by the new American University Director of Track and Field Sean Graham, who has seen the Northern Lights. At (14:36) Sean talks about being on one of the top high school cross country teams in the country and relates his experience to nationally ranked local team from Loudoun Valley and offers unsolicited advise for our scientists. At (19:19) we talk about his experience running for William and Mary and his post collegiate experience and the transition from professional runner to coaching at the University of Kentucky. At (29:20) we talk about the opportunity at American, transitioning back to Washington DC and the forecast for team. At (46:30) Joanna talks about her current training and then at (50:31) Docs runs without a watch and other random observations that can fit in a three minute segment. At (56:20) Farley asks his co-hosts to deep dive a Thomas Edison story and finally at (1:01:01) we reluctantly cover a story that is making its rounds in the running community, which Farley does not want you to bring up with him going forward. At (1:04:53) Pacers is hiring and (1:06:42) we recap our Hurricane Harvey and Irma fund raising efforts.

We recorded the show on Sept 11, at (7:42) and our hosts reflect on that fateful day, where they were and remember the impact that it had on this country. At (18:30) Runner's World columnist and Canadian author Alex Hutchinson calls in to discuss his writings, getting his PHD, running for Centro, and a whole lot of running science. At (51:56) we talk about the Northern Lights and rekindle talk about a podcast recording destination. At (55:00) I amazed at our ability to talk about running through the medium of professional football, soccer, and baseball. At (1:00:40) we have a PTN hoodie announcement. At (1:01:27) Farley breaks down the end of his running career and Joanna gives an update on her running, and Docs has a lot of unsolicited advice for his cohosts.

    It is one of our shortest shows ever, we try to limit the content to announcements and complaining, tell us what you think of the new format. We start off with the standard weather report before we make some exciting announcements like (4:42) we are now on facebook and (8:09) the sweatshirts are on the way, we swear. At (9:24) Farley looks for sympathy, and for some strange, miscalculated reason he turns to Docs. At (17:57) we get back on the announcement train and tell you all about our next planned road trip to the Running Event, which is a prelude to (19:37) actual running talk. At (6:10) we talk about an email from a person who is not happy with us. At (12:38) we recap the first ever PTN Judge Judy dog custody experiment, where our hosts compete against each other for custody of London and Luigi. At (19:07) Farley wants to talk about the over hyped boxing match of 2017 while Charlie and Docs want to talk about science.     Spoiler alert, Joanna is out of town so the boys naturally hold a book club in her absence. At (5:43) Kate Fagan of ESPN joins us to discuss her book What Made Maddy Run, where the conversation weaves around several topics including (7:45) what made her want to write the book and (15:53) social media and digital communication. At (21:58) we discuss Madisons love hate relationship with running which leads into a discussion about what the NCAA is doing to provide coaches with more help to support mental health issues. At (29:50) Kate talks about her own emotional investment throughout the course of writing the book. At (35:00) Kate talks about the responsibility an author has when writing about depression and suicide. At (49:58) Docs is excited about the solar eclipse which boggles the mind of Farley.


    PTN 118 - Unemployed...In Greenland Aug 20, 2017

    We start off the show (5:53) discussing a recent Judge Judy transaction and take a deep dive into a recent court case that centered around a dog. Continuing the dog discussion, at (13:13) Farley crowbars a self proclaimed good deed dog story into the show. And if that is not enough dog talk, at (17:20) we promote National Dog Day and an upcoming virtual 5k. At (18:01) we try to find out where in the world Docs has been. (19:21) Docs recaps his Ragnar Trail Relay and (28:58) a beach vacation, where the co-hosts discuss running while at the beach and what to do if you do not have a GPS watch. At (32:36) we talk about the Track and Field World Championships, looking at former PTN guest performances as well as recapping our favorite distance races. At (45:47) Docs touches on the Duck Tales premiere and polls the Pace the Nation Nation for their feedback and provides an employment update. At (48:07) we plug Pacers and upcoming events. We close out (49:02) with a preview of next weeks guest.


    Ep 117 - New Jersey connections (Darrell General) Aug 08, 2017

    Docs is on an extended vacation, so we have Senior Editor of Run Washington, Dickson Mercer, in studio to guest host. Joanna helps Farley remember a New Jersey song. Farley and Dickson compare notes about their sons who are a week apart. We are joined in studio by 2 time Marine Corps Marathon champion Darrell General. The local running DC legend has also qualified for the Olympic Marathon Trials a record tying 5 times. Dickson has a surprising connection to one of Darrell's best races he ever ran. That race took place in, you guessed it, New Jersey. Later in the show Farley and Joanna talk tipping on Square. Joanna mostly aces Farley's trivia question. And Dickson and Joanna talk about what they are looking forward to in the upcoming World Champs in London. We close the show talking about a week off next week and of course, the New Jersey marathon.


    Ep 116 - (Gabe Grunewald) Jul 30, 2017

    Joanna and Farley are in the studio sans Docs again. They talk about an adventure in Farleys parenting. Joanna shares are similar story that ends in her scaling a roof. The 2 hosts are joined on the phone by Gabe Grunewald. She is a professional track runner in the middle distances who has cancer. She suffers from a rare form of cancer - Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (ACC). She competed in the 2017 US track championships while she was on chemo. She tells her story - the history of the cancer and gives updates on her progress while she is at Sloan Kettering in NY City. Her honesty and positivity inspire the hosts throughout the interview. We close the show with talk of Joanna's CC Twilighter 5k and her upcoming trip to Maine.


    Ep 115 - (Alan Webb) Jul 24, 2017

    Alan Webbs 10 year anniversary of his American Record in the Mile. Docs is out of town so Farley and Joanna lead the in studio discussion – except for the part where Docs applauds Strava and talks about his race in Tahoe. Its hard to explain, you will just have to listen. We are joined in studio by the American record holder in the mile, Alan Webb. It is exactly 10 years since he set the record. His younger brother Chris tags along too. We talk about Alans life after professional running. His new business, Elite Onsite Fleet Services. Next we cover the fact that he was also the best miler ever in High School and all the pressure that came along with that. There is a brother therapy session, we talk about Alan becoming a professional and some of the ups and downs of his career. We recap the mile that broke Steve Scott’s 25 year old record – the record that has stood for 10 years now. Finally, we play some Alan Webb trivia to see if he can name his top 5 races of all time. Farley and Joanna do some promotion of next weeks show, and Farley puts in a Easter Egg for the first time of any of the shows he has edited.


    Ep 114 - Planez (Brain Danza) Jul 17, 2017

    We open the show with a deep dive into automobile oil changes. At (6:11) a SPRYNT car inspires us to make our travel app, do not steal our idea unless you are willing to pay reasonable royalties, in which case steal our idea and please send checks to the studio. At (10:35) we are joined by the Race Director of DC Road Runners One Mile and 3K championships Brian Danza. Farley is once again challenged by the space time continuum, as our guest is in studio to advertise a race that happened last weekend on July 15. At (13:03) lets talk about flying and our new travel app PLANEZ, which again, feel free to develop as long as you pay us. Much later, at (23:56) we seamlessly transition into Uber stories and self driving car stories, two more topics that have nothing to do with Running. At (27:12) we finally get to the DC Road Runners One mile & 3k Championships at Dunbar High School on July 15. It is a preview of a race that has now already happened. We talk about the history and evolution of the race while making live transportation observations. At (39:32) Brian lets us know what is up with the DC Road Runners and several of their other races. At (43:07) we record several contingencies to cover all of our bases because of the whole space time continuum thing. At (44:31) another Pace the Nation Bump field test is successful, as recent guest Robby Andrews punches his ticket to London for the World Championships by getting the IAAF standard qualifying time. At (46:11) a runner in Georgia claims to have encountered a bear while on a run, and at (50:55) we address the surprise podcast. At (51:51) Joanna goes on vacation, does a long run and tries hush puppies and we close out at (53:06) with Farley negotiating a deal with Joanna and Docs and our new app Studioz.
