    Old Fashioned On Purpose

We’ve gained a lot from modern life—but we’ve also lost something along the way. We’re more disconnected from our food, our hands, our communities, and the skills that once made everyday life feel grounded. On the Old-Fashioned on Purpose podcast, bestselling author Jill Winger explores what’s still worth keeping from the old ways—and how to make it work in real life now. Expect conversations about from-scratch food, old-fashioned skills, entrepreneurship, home, land, and what it means to build a meaningful life without turning it into another impossible ideal.

    Show notes

3Although we've talked a lot of about forging our own path and carving out our own independence, community is an essential part of the human experience. Not only is it impossible for us to produce everything we need, sometimes we just flat out need help to get through a difficult time. Over the past couple years Christian and I have made it a point to invest deeper in our local community. While it hasn't always been the easiest, in today's episode I share with you some ways that you can start reaching out and building deeper connections with the people around you. After all, the only way to really lessen your dependence on the infrastructure at large is by building and cultivating local resources. Tune in today to find out how!

S4 E10: Tricks for Storing & Using Bulk Pantry Goods (with Jessica) Apr 19, 2021
    Show notes

If you've been following along for the past year, food security has been a consistent topic of discussion. While I've talked a lot about planting gardens and how to produce vegetables, meat, dairy, and so on, I've only briefly touched on how to preserve and conserve for the long-haul. Today I'm thrilled to be joined by a real expert on this topic, Jessica from Three Rivers Homestead. With a family with seven kids, Jessica has experience not only with long-term storage but also volume storage. In today's episode we cover nearly everything including storage, how to intentionally use and replenish your pantry, what foods to buy and not to buy in bulk, how to prevent and deal with pests, how to plan your bulk buys, and so much more.

    Show notes

While modern medicine can provide tremendous benefits, it doesn't always provide the best or most helpful solution. While I have some experience working with things like essential oils, I'm not what someone would call an expert in alternative medicine. Thankfully, today I'm joined by Amy Fewell. Amy is an author, entrepreneur, and the Founder of the Homesteaders of America organization. On today's episode, Amy covers the best herbs to start with, the benefits of fresh vs dried herbs, the most common uses of herbs, and even talks about ways to use herbs with livestock. As a family herbalist, Amy truly has a wealth of knowledge on this subject. If you've ever wanted to lessen you reliance on modern medicine but never knew where to start, then this episode is for you!

    Show notes

While Christian and I had dreamed of building a greenhouse for nearly 10 years, when it came time to plan for it the process was so overwhelming that we gave up. While we were able to eventually finish our green house, it didn't happen until connected with someone who really knew what they were talking about. Today I'm thrilled to be joined by a true expert in the greenhouse space, the one and only Drew Landis.
Drew is the Marketing and IT Director for Greenhouse Megastore and has personally had his hands in over 50 greenhouse builds. In today's episode Drew covers everything including different types of greenhouses, ground coverings, how to best utilize your greenhouse year round, and if you even need a greenhouse in the first place. Drew brings a wealth of experience to cover all of the basics, and we even get into some more advanced topics like using geo-thermal and solar for heating and cooling. Let me tell you my friend, THIS episode is the shortcut I wish I would've had years ago. If you're ready to build a greenhouse, you won't want to miss this!

S4 E7: How to Stay Warm (and Cook!) When the Power Goes Out Apr 08, 2021
    Show notes

This might sound obvious to say, but most of us never even think about heat until the power goes out. Feeling that winter cold starting to creep in can be a really unsettling feeling if your sole source of heat is from the power grid. Thankfully, there are ways to counteract this problem. In today's episode I'm diving into my favorite form of heat. I cover all the basics of wood heat, including how to choose a wood stove and the best types of wood to use. I also discuss an option that will both allow you to cook without electricity while also improving your general quality of life under normal circumstances. No matter if you own your own homestead or if you live in town, this episode will help keep you covered no matter what mother nature might throw at you.

S4 E6: The Simple Formula for Planning a Year's Worth of Vegetables Apr 05, 2021
    Show notes

No matter if you're a new gardener or a seasoned veteran, I can guarantee you've struggled with figuring out how much to actually plant. How do I know? I struggled with this problem for years. No matter how much I searched online, I could never find an actual solution. Even worse, I continued making the same mistakes year-after-year without realizing what was happening. Well, fear not my friends. In usual Jill fashion, I'm coming to today's episode with a plan. Join me as I cover my straightforward equation for determining what to plant in the spring to ensure your family is covered all year long. First, I address the three key questions you must ask yourself before ever putting a single seed in the ground. Next, I dig deep into the equation I created, which includes factoring in your storage capacity. Finally, I provide several resources I've created to help make this garden season even easier for you and your family.

    Show notes

I must admit, while I fancy myself as being quite knowledgable as a homesteader, there is one area in particular I didn't have the slightest clue how to tackle. Although I had a good grasp on heating and cooking without electric, I had no idea what to do when it came to getting water. Thankfully, my good friend Amber Bradshaw has returned to help us all tackle our water systems. She even provides ideas for wind-energy solutions that can power a water heater! No matter if you're looking to go fully off the grid or simply looking to protect yourself in the face of extreme weather conditions, Amber offers a wealth of information to help cover every problem. S4 E4: Creating a Sustainable Off-Grid Homestead with (Amber Bradshaw) Mar 29, 2021
    Show notes

What do you do when the power goes out? For most of us, this is something we never think about and generally take for granted. However, the recent events in Texas and in some other areas of the country have re-enforced my interest in becoming self-sufficient when it comes to electricity. Today I'm thrilled to be joined by Amber Bradshaw. Amber is an author and her family's journey to off-grid living has been featured on the History Channel, Discovery Channel, and the D.I.Y. Network. Join us as Amber describes how she made the transition from city life to the mountains, how they decided on their solar setup, what they had to sacrifice, and how to properly plan for your needs. Amber's story is truly amazing and this episode is a must listen for anyone looking to lessen their energy dependency.

Eggs and dairy are certainly no stranger to this podcast. However, even with all my experience, I've never been able to figure out how to keep things going year-after-year without heading back to the store. In order to help solve this very problem, in today's episode I'm bringing in my good friend Kate Schat. S4 E2: How to Never Buy Meat at the Store Again Mar 22, 2021
    Show notes

What if you could never buy meat at the grocery store again? When I ask that question, I don't mean that the grocery store stopped selling meat. I mean, what if you could create your own self-sustaining source of meat that continued to produce year-after-year? In today's episode, I take a deep dive on everything needed to get a better handle on your meat production and storage needs. This includes everything from selecting the correct freezer, the amount of land you'll need to raise meat, the different types of beef available, how much beef you'll need for your family, and so much more.

Don't worry my friends, we're also going into what's required for raising chickens, pigs, and goats. I also touch on what you can do if you don't have the space or the time to raise your own meat. If you're ready to ditch the traditional grocery store meats, this is your episode!
