    Old Fashioned On Purpose

We’ve gained a lot from modern life—but we’ve also lost something along the way. We’re more disconnected from our food, our hands, our communities, and the skills that once made everyday life feel grounded. On the Old-Fashioned on Purpose podcast, bestselling author Jill Winger explores what’s still worth keeping from the old ways—and how to make it work in real life now. Expect conversations about from-scratch food, old-fashioned skills, entrepreneurship, home, land, and what it means to build a meaningful life without turning it into another impossible ideal.

    S4 E1: It's Time to Buck the System Mar 18, 2021
    Show notes

Whether it's toilet paper flying off the shelves or a historic winter storm in Texas, the past year has taught me that the systems society has created for us don't always work as designed in times of need. While us homesteaders already act outside the system by being homesteaders in the first place, I'm dedicating this season to building systems that can contribute to ourselves and our communities when disasters strike. Listen today to find out why this has become even more important to me over the past several months and get a preview of some of the exciting topics soon to come!

    Show notes

While we're getting ready to hit spring time and there's all sorts of exciting things happening on the homestead, I thought now was a great time to hit on something I always receive a ton of questions about. When you look at what Christian and I have built for ourselves, it's easy to assume that we always had money and things have been smooth sailing ever since we started this homesteading journey. Let me tell you, that couldn't be further from the truth. In today's episode, I'm going to cover how we've used businesses to fuel our growth as well as some of my biggest missteps along the way. Homesteading can be tough, so listen to find out how even a small side business can go a long way in getting through the growing pains.

S3 E11: How to Recover After a Major Garden Failure with Cris Daining Mar 01, 2021
    Show notes

No matter how long you've been gardening, it's almost guaranteed that you've faced some type of epic failure with your garden. While it's easy to get down on yourself when you have a bad gardening season, I'm here to give you some encouragement to continue pushing forward. In today's episode, I'm joined by my right-hand woman Cris Daining. Cris and I have been working together for years, and she's the first person I always turn to with my garden questions. Together we discuss why it's important to not turn a garden failure into a personal problem, why great gardening takes time, how a garden journal helps you grow (literally and figuratively), and so much more. Cris and I are here to reassure you that it's OK to cry over a lost garden, but it's not OK to accept failure. Listen to today's episode to learn how to turn that tragedy into triumph!

Concerned about preserving your garden bounty with the on-going canning lid shortage this year? I found the perfect solution!

Harvest Guard canning lids are not only 100% reusable, they are a fraction of the price regular lids are selling for online at the moment. They are BPA-free, earth-friendly (since you don’t have to toss them in the trash after one use), and work GREAT!

Check out their selection of regular and wide mouth lids at http://theprairiehomestead.com/canninglids and use code HOMESTEAD for 10% off your entire order— and shipping is always free.

    S3 E10: The Mysterious Winter Garden Feb 25, 2021
    Show notes

Winter gardening. No, I haven't bumped my head, and Christian and I didn't decide to pick up and move south. As crazy as it might sound, your garden is still a valuable tool no matter how cold it gets in the winter. While you might not be able to grow crops, today I'm going to explain how you can utilize your garden as additional storage to help your harvest last. I also cover other ways to extend your garden into the winter months, such as cold frames, high and low tunnels, and greenhouses. While you might be dreaming of a root cellar to solve your storage needs, this episode will give you many practical tips to ensure you're able to get the most out of your harvest!

    S3 E9: But Wait! There's More (Planning a Fall Garden) Feb 22, 2021
    Show notes

Summertime is a garden season, right? I don't know about you, but that's how I operated for the longest time. To be honest, I couldn't even conceive of being able to do anything in the garden after the August harvest. While you might not be able to plant a full garden in the fall, there are some amazing benefits to growing vegetables from September on into the early winter months. In today's episode, I cover the vegetables that thrive in the fall, when you need to plant your fall garden (hint: it's not in the fall), and cover crops that'll help your garden thrive in the future. If you've ever wondered how you could extend your gardening into colder months, this is the episode for you.
