Ok guys we are back! NYMR Episode 140 How to write your own training program. Today we have on the best in the business Mike Zourdos to help us figure out this whole training programming thing. Mike has in PHD in Exercise Physiology and is the assistant professor at Florida atlanti university. Mike is on the forfront of training optimal and I am super excited to have him on! Mike welcome to the podcast! So finally I will get the answer….what is the DUP?

Mike tell our listener alittle more about yourself and how you got into powerlifting and into the art of programming?

-There are many common forms of periodzation, such as linear, non liner block periodization and your specialty Daily undulating periodization? Can you give us a basic definition of each, how they can be useful for programming and why is it necessary?

    Frequency of lifts

Wht about if there isno competition for regular people

-What is the average length of a training block

oK Mike I think the best way to explain DUP and teach people how to use it is to give someone an example. If you don't mind can we quickly and rough draftly create a one 4 week block of DUP program using myself. I want you to ask me all the questions you would need to create a program. My rationale for this is that our listeners can understand a coaches perspective on how to create a program and what goes into design of one.

So lets use me as an example again… I WANT TO improve my deadlift and brng my 1 rep max up. What has to go into my training program in order to do that? Lets say for my next meet which is 12 weeks away I want to add as much as I can to my deadlift total

I'm 18 and a loyal listener to the podcast. I love weight training, but the people in my life have a problem with it saying that I'm going to become to big. So my question might be a bit weird. How do I get my arms smaller? I have a tiny waist but 13 inch arms, I know it's a genetic thing, my brother and I train together and people are normally amazed at how easily we gain muscle.

I don't have any other problems, and most of my body is quite lean. What can I do to loose weight in my arms before I go back home from university?

Love your podcast, and listen every week here in South Africa.

Ok guy we are back! Today we have an interesting topic Bloodwork for body composition and fitness

We have on one of our clients Austin Marshall MPAS, CPAAPA, PA-C basically hes a lot smarter then us. Austin is going to give us the run down from a medical point of view. And we are going to even do a live case study using pete and myself actual blood work. Austin welcome to NYMR! Give the listeners a little more info about who you are and your experience with fitness and the medical side of fitness.

How important is getting regular blood work done for fitness athletes, bodybuilders and anyone who wants to improve their body composition as well as health.

When you do go to the doctor what blood tests should you ask for? What should you get checked

What are some of the common things that might show up in lab work of a bodybuilder that some docs might mis interpret - creatine, AST liver elevations, occasionally fasting blood sugar spikes, blood count abnormalities, etc

For hormones and testosterone in specific there is always a reference range that is considered normal and healthy. But obviously having testosterone on the higher end of normal would help males prefer better and build more muscle and burn fat. What steps could someone take to improve testosterone within the normal range? How much of that is strictly genetic? What supplements can someone use to help?

What exactly is cholesterol and why do we actually care about it, and why anthony might have a better lipid panel than big pete despite eating the same macros.

What exactly is cortisol and how does intense strength training effect cortisol levels?

We hear it all the time, too much protein is bad for the liver and kidneys. What seems to be definition of "too much?" Some people are afraid of eating over the RDA of around 50g for males while other people over consume protein. Where is the limit?

New study from our group showing that doing a 1RM was all you needed to do to improve your 1RM. We chose a simple model to limit the skill aspect and showed that people doing daily 1RM's followed by additional exercise volume are likely getting nothing from the added exercise volume or muscle size (with respect to strength).

Say what you say about muscle growth in trained people for strength, here it did not augment strength.

Say what you say about doing more exercise volume, here it did not augment strength.

Say what you say about having "greater potential" to increase strength, here it did nothing.

Say what you say about having "greater practice" with movement, here it did nothing.

For strength, specificity is king…not muscle growth…and certainly not exercise volume.

"Our results suggest that the specificity of exercise, as opposed to exercise volume or muscle growth, are responsible for the magnitude of training-induced increases in 1RM strength. Additionally, the performance of familiarization sessions to eliminate the learning effect associated with 1RM testing is likely inappropriate. Therefore, individuals looking to increase 1RM strength should focus on the principle of specificity by practicing the 1RM test, and strength improvements are unlikely to be augmented by additional exercise volume." j

My bar path is always a different on my left side than my right, so although I can easily lift a larger weight, my form gets sloppier

What would you recommend to address and fix weak points and form issues that are only on one side ??
