Ok, cool. Now that we got that song stuck in your head for the next day or two, we can begin. We've got a solid episode for you folks because it's time for another Guest Host Tuesday! For today's episode, please welcome photographer and photo coach extraordinaire, Matt Kloskowski! Matt has an extensive history teaching photography and we couldn't think of a better person to join us. Actually, our first topic is directly based off of one of his blog posts, so there definitely isn't anyone better to be here with us. We're going to start off with a simple question: Is there a Lightroom replacement? With the noise surrounding Adobe's updates to Lightroom a few months back, you're seeing a number of companies vie to fill that gap for people who are abandoning ship. But seriously. Is it really that bad and, if so, can any other product fill those shoes? We follow that meaty topic up with a healthy debate around photo critiques and whether they're still relevant (Spoiler: they absolutely are). All that, a bag of chips, and a heaping of "What's On Your Gear Shelf?" make up Episode 17. Enjoy!

    Show Notes

    • We're thrilled to welcome our next guest host, Matt Kloskowski. Check out his fantastic training systems for Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, and ON1 Photo Raw [via MattK.com]

    • Our first topic is directly based off of a post that Matt recently shared about whether there are any true Lightroom alternatives [via MattK.com]

    • Despite the nominal performance boost, both Brian and Sharky agree that Lightroom is still their primary choice because there isn't time to learn a new ecosystem

    • Several alternatives, including Luminar, ON1 Photo Raw, and Capture One are considered

    • Finally, the hosts share experiences giving and receiving critiques and reaffirm why they're still so important

We're covering all the bases related to gear in this episode. No camera, computer or piece of software is safe! To start things off, Sharky and Brian discuss whether there is enough justification for upgrading from one camera to a new version within the same family. For example are there enough compelling reasons to upgrade from the Sony a7R II to the a7R III? What about a Canon 5D Mark III to the Mark IV? Lots of juicy stuff there. Next, the hosts field a question left by a reader of Brian's blog about whether more photographers are moving from Mac to Windows. All that and a fresh, heaping portion of "What's on Your Gear Shelf?" round out Episode 16. Enjoy and please share!

It's sorta wild that we've made it to Episode 15! You could say we've quindecupled our episode output. In this episode, your hosts tackle a story recently shared on PetaPixel about a photographer who used a national home improvement store location as the set for a photo shoot. The results turned out beautiful but there were some larger questions about whether it should have happened in the first place that we wanted to bring up. It's a solid story and we think you'll enjoy it. That's followed by the first in what we're hoping is a growing series that we're calling #AskNNPS. We received a thoughtful question via Twitter from a listener and we felt it was certainly worth a segment on the show. We're hoping that you take advantage of this by tweeting us your own questions or topics using #AskNNPS. We'll happily cover our favorites, so keep the suggestions coming!

    Show Notes

    • Our first story begins with a post that the original photographer and post author, Jenna Martin, shared [via PetaPixel]

    • Sharky brought up that the story had been shared over 53,000(!) times since recording. It has been re-shared over 59,000 times as of drafting this post.

    • The story had also been picked up by global news outlets, including in the UK [via the Daily Mail]

    • While we shared our thoughts on the matter, we both agreed that Jenna is a helluva photographer and we would like to share her amazing underwater photography [via Jenna Martin Photography]

    • The hosts then segue to the first in a new series called #AskNNPS. Show listener, Martin Greenaway, tweeted to the hosts about their thoughts on upgrading to a new camera system after outgrowing an existing entry-level setup [via Twitter]

Are you sitting down? No? Ok, we'll give you a minute to find a suitable place to park yourself because Episode 14 is a powder keg. We've been wanting to cover the topic of women in photography since the first episode but we knew we wanted to have a particular person as a guest host. That person is none other than the incomparable Tamara Lackey and we are positively thrilled to have her join us! Tamara, Sharky, and Brian tackle the issues and disparities surrounding female photographers who work just as hard as men but often have to deal with the crap that sadly comes with a predominantly male industry. It's a really strong segment and we're sure you're going to enjoy it a lot. Because we spent so much time on that topic, our second topic is much shorter but it has to do with managing photo shoot requests from family and friends. Finally, we'd never let you go without a solid edition of "What's On Your Gear Shelf?”

    Show Notes

    • Tamara, Sharky, and Brian kick things off by referencing a variety of stories and posts that highlight the disparity between male and female photographers in the professional industry.

    • The hosts bring up the debacle with the Nikon Asia D850 launch [via PetaPixel]

    • In response to that, Tamara shared a wonderful and thoughtful post shortly after this story broke [via Facebook]

    • She also shared a blog post with more insights into what female photographers deal with on a consistent basis [via tamaralackey.com]

    • Brian brings up a post by former co-host, Nicole S. Young, where she catalogs the male/female makeup of each major ambassador program, showing the wild disparity [via nicolesy.com]

    • We also want to make sure all of you know that Tamara has a new book, The Portrait Shoot Playbook, coming out very soon, so be sure to check it out! [via tamaralackey.com]

It's a good thing that Episode 13 isn't airing on a Friday, eh? Get it? Because of Friday the... yeah. You get it. All jokes aside, we're genuinely stupefied over our first story. A guy who uses someone's copyright protected photo without licensing actually takes umbrage with the photographer for suing him—and winning. How do these things still happen in 2017? Oh well. Hopefully, lessons have been learned and we can grow from here. Our second topic covers the ethics of photographing vulnerable people. It's a topic that Brian and Sharky were excited to discuss because it truly is an interesting conversation to have and worth pondering for yourselves.

    Show Notes

    • Instead of adding our own colorful commentary to introduce this story, we're just going to paste the title of the actual article because it does the job perfectly: "INTERNET “ENTREPRENEUR” SHOCKED THAT COPYRIGHT OWNER SUED HIM FOR STEALING THEIR WORK" [via DIYPhotography]

    • Brian and Sharky bring up the importance of US-based photographers registering their photos [via US Copyright Office]

    • Sharky mentions photographer Jack Reznicki, who is the co-author of The Copyright Zone: A Legal Guide For Photographers and Artists In The Digital Age [via Amazon]

    • The hosts then segue to their second topic inspired by a recent PetaPixel article about photographing vulnerable people. No matter where you stand, this is something worth thinking about. [via PetaPixel]

We take the requests of our wonderful audience very seriously, so when you ask for a specific guest host to join us, we deliver. That's just how we roll.

And so, Episode 012 finds us with our second guest host: the incomparable Nicole S. Young (aka Nicolesy)! In this episode, your three hosts tackle a topic that cuts close to the bone with today's state of photography and social media. Can there be too many gorgeous photos out there? If so, what does one need to do to stand apart from the crowd? It's a serious topic and one that we're thrilled to have Nicole weigh in on. The next topic comes hot on the heels of the 2017 PhotoPlus Expo in New York City. Both Brian and Nicole were in attendance and Sharky raises the question as to whether it pays (literally and figuratively) for photographers to invest in attending a photo expo. All that plus a triple dose of "What's On Your Gear Shelf?" rounds out the episode.

    Show Notes

    ◦ Nicole found a great article thoughtfully discussing the commoditization of stunning photography on social media. It's a great read and worth serious consideration [via The Field]

    ◦ Sharky brings up photo trends that had their 15 minutes of fame and then fizzled out, like spinning steel wool. Brian shares his first and only experience photographing this in San Francisco:

    • Nicole and Brian share their experiences attending the PDN PhotoPlus Expo in New York City

    • Sharky questions the need for a photographer to attend an expo as opposed to spending the money on gear

    • Nicole recommends taking the money normally spent to attend an expo and spend it on a workshop with a photographer that you greatly admire

    • All three hosts unanimously agree that they'd love to attend Martin Bailey's Japan Snow Monkeys workshop [via Martin Bailey Workshops]

I love the smell of a new episode in the morning. Our 11th installment kicks off with a good ol', wholesome story of a newlywed couple whose NSFW stunt ruined wedding plans for a bunch of other couples. It's another example of why we can't have nice things (check out Episode 005 for more on that). Brian and Sharky clearly have their thoughts on the matter and, as you'd expect, they weren't afraid to lay it out. In an effort to calm things down, Sharky changes the subject to remind Brian about how he failed at implementing a true mobile photography strategy on his recent trip to Grand Teton National Park. Oh, and Brian has a retraction to issue. It's hunting season for Brian, we guess! All that and a new "What's On Your Gear Shelf?" round out this week's episode.

    Show Notes

    • A newlywed couple figured it'd be all good if they took a lewd photo of themselves with the religiously devout Greek island of Rhodes in the background and, well, the locals didn't take too kindly. [NSFW via DIYPhotography]

    • The hosts notice that this is clearly a trend with other similarly offensive incidents occurring at other historic and culturally sensitive areas [NSFW Example 01 and NSFW Example 02 both via DIYPhotography]

    • Sensing that Brian needed a pick-me-up, Sharky thought it'd be a good idea to see how successful Brian was with his mobile photo strategy during a recent road trip. (Spoiler: he failed completely) [Listen to Episode 006 for more context]

    • After Brian's wife, Nicolesy, listened to Episode 009, she had a different account of their encounter with a photographer at the historic barns on Mormon Row in Grand Teton National Park. She made Brian issue a retraction and, like a good and fearful husband, he does as he's told.

Alas, double digits and it feels so good! We've got something special in store for this milestone: our first guest host! From the get go, our goal has been to introduce guests because... guests are cool and cool guests are even cooler. But unlike many other shows that make the episode about the guest, our goal is to bring on guests who become part of the show. So with that, we're thrilled to introduce wedding photographer and the Storm Whisperer himself, Mike Olbinski, to join us for this episode! Fortunately, Adobe made some seriously big announcements with their Lightroom road map last week that provided more than enough fodder for our trio to discuss. Finally, each of our hosts share some pivotal moments from their lives that fundamentally changed their professional directions and led them to become full time, working photographers. All that plus a triple dose of "What's On Your Gear Shelf?" make up Episode 10!

    Show Notes

    • Brian and Sharky are thrilled to announce the show's very first guest host, Mike Olbinski. Aside from being a helluva wedding photographer, Mike is also one of the best storm chasers out there and has created some of the most visually stunning time lapse videos that your eyes have ever seen. Seriously, clean your floor because your jaws are about to be hitting them pretty hard. [Vimeo]

    • Now that you've had a chance to lift your jaws back up and wipe the mess you made on the ground, we can move onto the lil' bit of news coming out of Adobe's camp. In addition to a slew of major updates to their Creative Cloud ecosystem, the company announced a "new" version of Lightroom dubbed "Lightroom CC" with the existing implementation renamed with the lovely moniker, "Lightroom Classic." As you can imagine, this caused a lot of confusion and even more ire with the legion of photographers hoping for a more substantial update. [via the always wonderful Julieanne Kost on the Adobe Blog]

    • Mike and Sharky weigh in on these changes and lament about how much they wish Lightroom's initial culling experience was faster, similar to what Photo Mechanic provides. [Camera Bits]

    • After much hullabaloo, the hosts shift gears by recalling some of their more pivotal experiences that led them to leave their existing careers to pursue photography as a primary profession

We're so close to double-digit episodes, we can taste it... and it tastes GOOD! In this episode, Brian refers to a recent experience he had with another photographer during a road trip to Grand Teton National Park. It promoted both hosts to talk about the etiquette—or, sometimes, lack thereof—that photographers should consider having. Being nice and paying it forward should just be a natural thing that good photographers, and people, do. This allows Sharky and Brian to segue to a story about a new addition to "Leave No Trace" principles while visiting natural locations with your camera. Nosh on that and then come back for a heaping portion of "What's on your gear shelf?" You'll feel full in no time.

    Show Notes

    • Brian and Sharky share stories about photographers who treat every shoot like a competition and the act of helping another person out with information must be protected at all costs

    • Brian recounts a particularly frustrating story while visiting Mt. Ranier National Park with photographer, Matt Kloskowski. [visit mattk.com]

    • Sharky shares experiences from his photojournalism days and how some gigs were put in jeopardy because of others acting stupidly

    • The hosts use their stories as a means to introduce the 7 principles of the Leave No Trace Center [source]

    • A story was posted where an eighth principle has been proposed, urging people not to share photos from natural locations for fear of future damage [via GearJunkie]

Ok, ok. We admit it. Episode 8 comes out of the gate a little hot but what can we say? Brian has a short fuse when it comes to the whiny and entitled crap that some photographers cry about. Like it or not but there is no democracy with sharing your photos online and, well, this one article put Brian in the red. Fortunately, Sharky was there to even things out and calm the tides with his patently awful "Dad Jokes." Hey, you keep asking for them and we're not the sort of folks who say, "no," to the wishes of our dear audience. The second half of the show turns gears onto a seriously unfortunate event where a wedding photographer spaced out and left his backpack with his camera on an NYC subway car. Yikes. All that and a fresh serving of "What's On Your Gear Shelf?" will call Episode 8 done.

    Show Notes

    • A recent article by Baber Afzal grinds Brian's gears when the author complains that major Instagram hubs only share the work of other super-popular photographers and not of lesser-known creators. [via DIY Photography]

    • Sharky takes a moment to sneak in his IG follower count. Brian had to follow suit.

    • Sharky and Brian begin laying out the problems of today's generation of creatives who have a misplaced sense of entitlement.

    • Brian then moves the show onto the second topic where photographer, Kurt Sneddon, spaced out and left his backpack with his camera on an NYC subway car. Oh, and the camera had the only copy of a wedding event in it. [via DIY Photography]

    • Sharky and Brian continue on by sharing some of their strategies for backing up photos on the fly and when returning home
