There's another social network making waves and you may have heard about it. The darling platform of late is called Vero and there has been a recent influx of photographers moving over for the prospect of no ads and no algorithms. Vero claims that their business model will be built atop a subscription fee (beyond the first million users, who get free lifetime membership). Time will tell what happens here and Brian and Sharky share their experiences using the app. Our second topic brings to fruition a prediction that we made way back in Episode 007. In that episode, Brian predicted that we'll start to see more camera technology incorporating intelligence to aid photographers. Sure enough, Canon has answered the charge. All that and a fresh batch of "What's On Your Gear Shelf?" to wrap this up.

We're thrilled to welcome our next guest to the show. If you've ever had your jaw hit the ground after seeing some particularly stunning macro photos of snowflakes, odds are they were taken by Don Komarechka. Don is the consummate photographer, equally passionate about the art of photography as much as the science behind it. And, Don is the perfect person to join us as we discuss the topic of niches and what role they play in developing your brand. Don lends some very keen insight here, given his extensive knowledge of the topic. Next, we segue to a murkier conversation about the perils of sharing your photos on social media. What counts as "Fair Use" these days and is it possible to unwittingly find yourself in trouble by sharing someone else's photo. It's a great conversation and we think you're going to love it. And just in case all of that wasn't enough, we've also got a fresh batch of "What's on Your Gear Shelf?" to tide you over until suppertime.

Welcome to Episode 25, everyone! That's probably 24 more episodes in the can than both hosts expected, but who's counting? The stories covered in this episode share the theme of branding and how some photographers choose to market their brands. Our first story involves a photographer whose brand is used to limelight and controversy. We're talking, of course, about Peter Lik and the recent confirmation that he had composited a recent super moon photo even though his initial description made no such claim. The second story comes from a video shared by Youtuber and photographer, Jessica Kobeissi. Despite billing herself as a professional photographer and resource, she made the tragic—and rookie—mistake of no maintaining any sort of backup for her work. So, when her sole external hard drive crashed while traveling, she had to cough up $4,000 to recover the data. How does this even happen anymore, people? All that and a fresh dose of "What's on Your Gear Shelf?"

Welcome back, friends! The past few years have been brought about an important and thoughtful need for change around accepting people for who they are and as they are. Messages about the importance of body-positivity can be seen spreading everywhere, and today's girls and young women need to hear it more than ever. We continue to see onslaughts of preened and manicured photo streams, showcasing picture-perfect moments taken at picture-perfect locations and including picture-perfect bodies. All of this has taken a toll on today's youth, so when a company like CVS decides to take action by banning the use of photoshop on any beauty product photos, it deserves to be recognized. Sadly, not everyone has gotten the memo, and we talk about that, too. Next up, Brian and Sharky share thoughts and best practices to keep in mind when considering joining a photography workshop. There are plenty of amazing ones out there... and just as many "not-amazing" ones, too. We'll help you figure out one from the other. Finally, a new dose of "What's on Your Gear Shelf?" to make your day.

For those about to rock, we salute you. That is, of course, you plan on rocking out at a Jack White concert with your mobile device. In that case, you're out of luck. More and more, musicians are clamping down on the prolific use of smartphones at live events. Concertgoers who wish to nab some photos or a quick video to remember the event are out of luck, so Brian and Sharky discuss whether the new policy is too far-reaching. Next up, the hosts build on some topics brought up in Episode 20 with Colby Brown. With all of the algorithms in place at Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter that determine which of your shared content will get shown, is it even possible for emerging photographers to make a dent with their brands? All that and, you guessed it, a fresh heaping scoop of "What's On Your Gear Shelf?" round out this episode. Enjoy!

You know what we love? Whenever we hear from our audience about the topics covered (or suggested topics). We're super lucky to have a wonderful band of listeners and when one of you shares feedback, we take it seriously. Such is the case with the first segment of our show. After listening to Episode 20 with our guest, Colby Brown, DCraig left a comment with some insight and poignant questions about training your competition and the overcrowding of the photography space. We really liked what he had to say and decided to expand on it here. Like we said, we LOVE hearing from you, so don't hesitate from actively engaging on our posts. Next up, Sharky and Brian cover a rather contentious policy change at Zion National Park. While it won't affect general tourists and photographers, it will have a serious impact on commercial projects, like photo workshops.

There are all sorts of shenanigans going on in the photo industry these days and we're gonna cover some of it in this episode. To start, Brian and Sharky bring up a thoughtful article about whether we, as photographers, are experiencing an over-sharing epidemic. While the title of this PetaPixel article may be a bit melodramatic, there are some reasonable points that author, Caleb Kerr, makes about our tendency to want to capture everything happening at every moment and from every angle. While the crux of Caleb's article stems from 360-degree cameras, we feel that it can be applied to other forms of image and video capture. Next, your hosts cover a peculiar story about Canon EMEA using a clearly composited photo with a large component coming from a photo taken by Elia Locardi. There are a lot of moving parts to this one, so definitely give it a listen. Finally, we've got another solid entry in our "What's On Your Gear Shelf?" series. Enjoy!

Here we are! A new year, a new episode (#20!) and a new guest. With all the resolutions and goals that photographers make, we thought it'd be a great time to dive into the role that social media plays with how we share our work and build our brands. To help bring that conversation to life, we're thrilled to introduce our next guest host, Colby Brown! Usually, each episode consists of two topics but because there was so much great chatter about how social media affects today's photographers, we decided to devote the entire show to it. If you've been looking for ways to help improve how you utilize social media with your photography, definitely listen to this show. And don't you worry... we've also got a fresh portion of "What's On Your Gear Shelf?" waiting to be served up.

Alas, friends, we have reached the final episode of 2017. The rate at which this show has grown since we first kicked things off in August still boggles our minds and we can't thank all of you enough. Seriously, all of you listeners drive us to put out the best show possible every week because we understand that the most precious resource you have is time and we want you to feel that it is well spent. As we continue growing into 2018 and beyond, we'd love to ask you for another 90 seconds of your time by filling out this user survey. This information is very helpful in letting us understand who our audience is and your participation is greatly appreciated. Ok, onto the show! Our first topic was inspired by a poll that Sharky created on his Instagram stories (follow Sharky and Brian on IG), where he asked how people felt about their photography pursuits in 2017. The results were surprising enough for us to want to dig deeper in. We then follow that up with the bit of news making the rounds regarding Apple and their intentional throttling of older iPhone speeds. Is it warranted? Do these class action lawsuits filed against Apple have merit? Listen up to find out! Finally, we put a bow on our final episode of the year with a fresh portion of "What's On Your Gear Shelf?"

Just because you can doesn't mean that you should. "What the heck are these jokers even talking about?" is something that you reasonably may be asking yourselves regarding that statement, right? So let us tell you. Let's say you have the ability to share 100 photos with your audience at the same time, should you? Photo sharing site, 500px, doesn't think so. In fact, they've taken steps to actively restrict how many photos you can share (with a free account) and we applaud them for it. Listen up to understand why. We follow this up with a tough topic as it relates to major photo blog sites and whether they're doing more harm than good under the guise of being "journalists" and "news sources". Heavy stuff, right? Well, let's lighten that load with another solid installment of "What's On Your Gear Shelf?" and call it good. High fives all around!
