So many of us suffer from worthiness wounds and feel as though our needs don’t matter as much as those around us.

Today’s guest, Thais Sky, is a truthspeaker, healer, women’s coach and feminist on a heart-led mission to support the seekers, the edge-dwellers, and the “why the heck do I feel so broken” of the world reclaim their sense of belonging by learning how to explore, trust and express themselves unapologetically. Based on her own healing journey and decades of research and mentoring women worldwide, she has developed a comprehensive model that explores and offers tools/skills to heal the pervasive sense of unworthiness within women, what she calls the worthiness wound. She also hosts a weekly podcast RECLAIM where she offers conversations on finding the intersection of feminism and spirituality. Thais received a prestigious first-class degree in Management and is currently getting her Masters in Clinical Psychology. Washingtonian Magazine named her as one of the top “8 bloggers to know.” The Huffington Post calls her “an inspirational woman” and she was nominated for Forbes Magazine 30 under 30 award.

Inside this episode, we explore the notion of allowing unworthiness to exist and cultivating a relationship with it. We dive into learning to be in conflict with your own sovereignty and the sovereignty of others and how you can love yourself without diminishing your love for others. She shares practices you can use in your own life and why you need to infuse time into your day to ask yourself, “What do I need?”

Tune in to hear us explore…

    • Why so many people pretend like their needs don’t exist
    • Expanding your capacity to sit with discomfort & creating more space for your emotions
    • How your perception of self-worth impacts the care you give to yourself

Tending to Your Perfectionism with Justine Taormino Sep 24, 2019

Send Mara a quick text love note here!

Today’s Needy Podcast episode features Justine Taormino!

Justine Taormino is a writer and coach living in Ojai, California with her little family: her husband, an almost 3-year-old daughter, and their rescue dog. Her favorite things include reading, hot beverages, good conversations, water of any kind (ocean, baths, rivers, rain), and all things self-development. She’s a highly sensitive Piscean INFJ who loves bringing people together and is obsessed with the experience of our experiences.

In today’s episode, Justine and I dive into the many ways that perfectionism and unrealistic expectations muck up your relationship with yourselves and others. Justine beautifully shares about how she has learned to stop judging her needs and start challenging the self-imposed restraints she had been placing around receiving what she needed. Through her wise advice and wonderful anecdotes, Justine reminds us how powerfully worthwhile it is to be emotionally honest and bring all of yourself into your relationships.

Justine is also a Tend graduate! During this episode she shared a little bit about her experience in Tend last year. If you are interested in joining me for Tend, you have until Friday to claim your seat. You can find out more by clicking this link.

Tune in to hear us explore…

    • Tending to your physical body & learning it is not a machine
    • Connecting with & prioritizing the things you value the most
    • Navigating tending to your needs when you have a toddler at home
    • Mara’s favorite “whiteboard method” & what it changed for Justine’s relationship

Taking off Your Superhero Cape with Christina Perkins Sep 17, 2019
    Show notes

Today’s truly special episode features Christina Perkins!

Christina Perkins is a needy human who is working daily on accepting her neediness. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, pet caretaker, enneagram 2, INFJ, and a Scorpio. She is currently in private practice in Knoxville, Tennessee and working toward a Doctorate in Social Work. She is a cis, queer woman who is working really hard to hold open space for queer people in the Southeast to be themselves, take care of themselves, and tend to their mental health. She is a cancer survivor, an Ivy League educated and once poor kid from rural Appalachia, a good friend, sister, and partner, and a pretty kick-ass historian of 80s and 90s useless song lyrics.

In today’s powerful episode, Christina and I discuss the importance of prioritizing your needs when you work in a helping profession. Through Christina’s insight and beautiful anecdotes, we explore the true cost of putting other people first and what it means to believe that your worth relies squarely on what you DO for others instead of who you are. Christina reminds us that it’s time to take off our superhero capes and bring our needs into the center of our lives.

Christina is also a Tend graduate, so she shared a little bit about her experience in Tend last year. If you are interested in joining me for Tend, you have a little over a week to claim your seat! You can find out more by clicking this link.

Tune in to hear us explore…

    • Dismantling the belief that asking for help means you are weak
    • How holding space for others ethically means embracing & tending to your needs first
    • Feeling — and trusting — your feelings (even anger)
    • Navigating feedback from others when we change how we show up in our relationships
    • Loving out of abundance instead of deficit

Self-Care & The Creative Life with Anna Lovind Aug 16, 2019

Today’s episode features writer, editor, and creativity mentor Anna Lovind.

Anna has seen bestselling authors through to publication, helped launch solo entrepreneurs into orbit and guided hundreds of creatives from all over the world to go from dreaming to doing. In her upcoming book, The Creative Doer, she writes about women’s creative freedom. In teacher program Write Your Self she teaches how to use writing as a tool for healing. Every once in a while she hosts a workshop or a retreat where women gather to make dreams happen. More than anything, she believes in the power of our voices and stories. Anna lives in rural Sweden, where forests are deep, winter is dark and summer nights last
    forever.

In today’s episode, Anna and I discuss the laughable concept of finding “balance” between creativity and taking care of ourselves, practical negotiations in getting your needs met on a more oft occurring basis, and trusting your body to let you know what you need. This deeply rich conversation delves into the heart of what it means to be a driven, ambitious creator with a human body in need to tending and a hunger to live life well.

Tune in to hear us explore…

    • doing the work you are called to do instead of what you think you should do
    • saying no — even and especially when that means saying no to yourself
    • worthiness and believing you deserve to maintain your own boundaries
    • where to begin in cultivating your creative life
