Anna Guest-Jelley is the founder of Curvy Yoga, an online yoga studio and teacher training center that helps people of all shapes and sizes find true acceptance and freedom, both on and off the mat. She is the author of Curvy Yoga: Love Yourself & Your Body a Little More Each Day and the co-editor of Yoga and Body Image: 25 Personal Stories About Beauty, Bravery & Loving Your Body. I have been lucky to have known Anna since the very inception of Curvy Yoga, and I never cease to be inspired by her gentle, kind, and deeply powerful approach to accepting the body that you are in right now. In today’s episode Anna touches upon so many of my favorite topics – including how accepting our bodies is not in fact the death sentence so many of us worry that it might be, but instead is a pathway towards greater levels of growth grounded in self-love.

Tune into this conversation to hear us talk about

    • Caring for the body that you have instead of waiting until your “new body’ shows up
    • Letting go of your magical thinking and surrendering to the present moment
    • Focusing on how your body feels instead of how your body looks
    • Using your yoga practice as a place to practice body acceptance
    • How acceptance is not the same thing as stagnation (at all)

The more that I take ownership of meeting my own needs, the less "needy" I am for external validation or for someone else to swoop in and save me from myself. In today's episode, career change coach Lisa Lewis turns the tables by interviewing me about my relationship with my needs, reclaiming the concept of what it means to be "needy," and the personal power generated when we take responsibility for caring for ourselves as if we are deserving of our care.

Tune in to hear us explore…

    • Prioritizing the things that make you feel good
    • Loving yourself… even when you may not particularly like yourself
    • What building a relationship with yourself truly looks like
    • Finding the grey zone between giving yourself a free pass and holding yourself to your commitments to your self with gentle discipline

You Are Not (Just) A Complicated Houseplant May 22, 2018

Perhaps you've seen some variation of the meme telling you to get some water, food, and sunlight, because you are little more than a complicated plant. And, one one hand that concept is totally spot on, but on the other... you, being delightfully human, require more than water, food, and sunlight in order to feel TRULY fulfilled and nourished.

In today's episode, I explore what a need actually is, how you can figure out what you need, and where to focus your self-care right this second.

Tune in to hear me explore…

    • Expanding your understanding of a “need” vs. a “want”
    • What your feelings have to do with your needs
    • How to build your stamina and capacity to create the world you want to live in
    • Presence vs. Perfection (Oh yesssss.)

    Motherhood & Self-care with Graeme Seabrook May 15, 2018
    Show notes

Send Mara a quick text love note here!

Graeme is a maternal mental health expert, advocate, and community leader who helps moms remove their capes and reconnect with their whole selves. As a certified life coach and founder of The Mom Center, an online community exclusively for moms, she’s coached over 2,000 mothers on how to place their names at the top of their priority list, without guilt or shame.

The Whole Human Mama approach to this work includes a methodology that sits at the intersection of capitalism, patriarchy, and self-care. Her message moves beyond the traditional themes of finding balance and improving productivity for moms, and takes a 360 degree look into strategies that encourage their complete mental and emotional wellness.

Described as radical, honest, and uplifting, Graeme’s work is inspired by her experience with recovering from a traumatic birth and battling postpartum depression, when she became a mom for the first time. Her goal is to put moms in the spotlight and celebrate them for their courage to stand boldly in the truth of who they are – with or without capes.

Tune into this conversation to hear more about

    • Putting yourself on the calendar and holding yourself to your commitment to your own care
    • Asking for exactly what you want and need
    • How your self-care might look different than everyone else’s (and that’s TOTALLY ok)
    • Committing yourself to truly manageable and fulfilling self-care
