    Native Land Pod

In the spirit of the last stanza of the Black National Anthem, we rise from the past, rooted deeply in the soil of ancestral struggles, to build a home, to claim our space. On Native Land Pod, Angela Rye, Bakari Sellers, and Andrew Gillum guide us through the political landscape, wielding insights and unapologetic analysis, unraveling the threads that connect Black Americans and marginalized communities to a place they courageously call home.

In each episode, Angela, Bakari, and Andrew embark on a journey of reflection, taking stock of the news of the week and the country’s road to the polls.

Join us each week as we navigate the dance between past and present, weaving a narrative of hope, empowerment, and the unyielding strength that defines the journey to reclaim ‘Native Land.’ This isn’t just news analysis; it’s a movement, a conversation, and a testament to the power of those who dare to rebuild and redefine the meaning of home.

    Show notes

How to fight back. Where are the Dems? Fed employees purged.

Between the end of DEI, migrants deported to Guantanamo, Federal payment systems seized and more–y’all got a lot of questions about The Fight. Hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum will respond. We cannot afford to sit out Trump 2.0, the Black community will be impacted first. You gotta know your role.

An email has gone out to 3 million+ federal employees–virtually the entire federal workforce–offering them a buyout to resign. The subject line read “Fork in the Road,” just like the email Elon Musk sent to Twitter employees during mass layoffs. What are the consequences and will those who acceptthe buyout lose their retirement?

We’ll end the episode with a special tribute to our #1 sports reporter: Tiffany Cross.

Black Hollywood with Leslie Jones | NLP Replay Feb 01, 2025

Comedian and actress Leslie Jones is that b*tch in Hollywood. Behind the scenes she’s experienced racism both subtle and overt and she is NOT having any of it.

Leslie tells hosts Angela Rye, Tiffany Cross and Andrew Gillum what she thinks about this political moment, the role of Black Hollywood, and advice for the youth.

Boycott or Nah? Jan 30, 2025
    Show notes

This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum are joined by comedian Leslie Jones to answer a question that we’ve been hearing a lot lately: “What do we do?”

What do we do in response to a Trump administration that’s upending our government? What do we do to re-focus on our local communities and ourselves? And what do we do about all these companies ending DEI? We hear y’all–what do we do??

Call 202-224-3121 to reach your local senator and make your voice heard.

The debate: to boycott or not to boycott? Large companies like Target, Facebook/Meta and Tesla have gone mask-off and ended their DEI initiatives in response to a “shifting cultural and legal landscape.” Does this mean inclusivity in hiring practices is over?

And comedian and actress Leslie Jones talks about being unapologetically Black in Hollywood. How do Black entertainers stand up for themselves in the entertainment industry AND should they be standing up for all of us?

And of course we’ll hear from you! If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/

Federal Funding Paused? | SoloPod Jan 28, 2025
    Show notes

How the federal funding freeze impacts YOU.

In a legally questionable move, President Trump has issued a federal funding freeze on all public loans, grants, and federal assistance programs. $3 trillion dollars were spent on federal assistance programs in 2024, money that helps fund universities, non-profits, small businesses, and local government grants. These programs touch countless American lives.

On her first SoloPod, Angela Rye breaks down the far-reaching consequences of the funding freeze, identifying some of the more crucial programs at risk, and the legal challenges to the order itself.

WTF Nelly and Snoop?? Jan 23, 2025
    Show notes

Why Nelly and Snoop went to inauguration. Abuse of presidential pardon power, J6ers v. Marilyn.

This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum react to Biden’s final days in office and Trump’s first.

Former President Biden issued a flurry of last-minute pardons including preemptive pardons for his own family. So he knows how to look out for his own but not our own, got it. We’ll talk about who did NOT get a pardon (Marilyn Mosby)–meanwhile Trump jailbreaks the J6 insurrectionists.

Rappers Nelly and Snoop Dogg performed at Trump’s inauguration despite past anti-Trump comments. “It’s not political,” Nelly said. “It’s out of respect for the office.” Is there any benefit for the Black community to engage with the Trump administration or are artists like Nelly and Snoop just being used?

The hosts debate when the idea of “no permanent friends, no permanent enemies, only permanent interests” comes into play when dealing with Trump and his government.

Inauguration: Who All ‘Gon Be There? Jan 20, 2025
    Show notes

Michelle Obama will not be attending Trump’s inauguration. If he truly believes Trump is a threat to democracy, shouldn’t Barack also bail? And why are we seeing Barack and Trump kiki??

On this MLK day, our hosts Angela Rye, Tiffany Cross, and Andrew Gillum reflect on the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and his dream for racial equality and liberation. In a fitting start to what promises to be a tumultuous year, the holiday falls on the same day as Trump’s inauguration.

Our WorldStar Congress Jan 16, 2025
    Show notes

Historically Black community burns, DOJ on Tulsa massacre, and Trump cabinet picks.

This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum acknowledge our brothers and sisters still reeling from the wildfires in the LA area. We’ll pay special attention to a historic Black neighborhood in Altadena that was hit by the Eaton Fire.

A shout out to Marilyn Mosby who’s running out of time to get a pardon from President Biden! Sign the petition @ justiceformarilynmosby.com

It’s becoming increasingly common for members of Congress to challenge each other to fist fights. What’s behind this phenomenon and how likely is it that we’ll see our elected officials ACTUALLY come to blows?

The DOJ has released a review of the Tulsa massacre. They found that the race riot was a “coordinated, military style attack” against the Black community but there’s no one left to prosecute. What’s next for the survivors?

Trump’s cabinet is being confirmed by the Senate this week, including some of his more controversial picks like Christian Crusader Pete Hegseth. Our hosts track which confirmations deserve our attention and share some spicy moments from earlier in the week.
