    Native Land Pod

    In the spirit of the last stanza of the Black National Anthem, we rise from the past, rooted deeply in the soil of ancestral struggles, to build a home, to claim our space. On Native Land Pod, Angela Rye, Bakari Sellers, and Andrew Gillum guide us through the political landscape, wielding insights and unapologetic analysis, unraveling the threads that connect Black Americans and marginalized communities to a place they courageously call home.

    In each episode, Angela, Bakari, and Andrew embark on a journey of reflection, taking stock of the news of the week and the country’s road to the polls.

    Join us each week as we navigate the dance between past and present, weaving a narrative of hope, empowerment, and the unyielding strength that defines the journey to reclaim ‘Native Land.’ This isn’t just news analysis; it’s a movement, a conversation, and a testament to the power of those who dare to rebuild and redefine the meaning of home.

    Meanwhile, conditions inside of American prisons are so inhumane, that prisoners at one Virginia State institution have been lighting themselves on fire in protest. Tiffany guides us on a deepdive into Red Onion State Prison.

    And Trump has proposed a new director for the FBI, Kash Patel, who’s threatening to disband the FBI’s Washington bureau and fire its leadership. Sometimes politics makes for strange bedfellows…

    Does the hypocrisy of Mitch McConnell know no bounds? He’s been sounding off on Federal judges who have reneged on retirement since Trump won, calling it “naked partisanship.” Mitch, please.

    This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum share some of the amazing comments we’ve gotten from you, our NLP fam, along with a replay of three of our best segments that feel especially relevant now:

    What’s up with Project 2025? The 900+ page document that outlines the republican plan to replace tens of thousands of public employees in the FBI, Department of Justice, and more with conservative loyalists. The plan could change the federal government as we know it.

    IMMUNE. That’s what the Supreme Court said a president will be for any “official” act taken while in office. To quote the dissenting opinion written by Justice Sotomayor, “Orders the Navy's Seal Team 6 to assassinate a political rival? Immune. Organizes a military coup to hold onto power? Immune. Takes a bribe in exchange for a pardon? Immune. Immune, immune, immune… In every use of official power, the president is now a king above the law.”

    AND Biden’s laid out some of his priorities for the remainder of his term, like Supreme Court reform, but how can he actually get that done? And what other bold actions could he take now that he’s a lame duck? The hosts dream BIG.

But what are recess appointments, when have they been used in the past, and how does that compare to how Trump might use them now?
