    Native Land Pod

In the spirit of the last stanza of the Black National Anthem, we rise from the past, rooted deeply in the soil of ancestral struggles, to build a home, to claim our space. On Native Land Pod, Angela Rye, Bakari Sellers, and Andrew Gillum guide us through the political landscape, wielding insights and unapologetic analysis, unraveling the threads that connect Black Americans and marginalized communities to a place they courageously call home.

In each episode, Angela, Bakari, and Andrew embark on a journey of reflection, taking stock of the news of the week and the country’s road to the polls.

Join us each week as we navigate the dance between past and present, weaving a narrative of hope, empowerment, and the unyielding strength that defines the journey to reclaim ‘Native Land.’ This isn’t just news analysis; it’s a movement, a conversation, and a testament to the power of those who dare to rebuild and redefine the meaning of home.

How to Buy a Politician Mar 20, 2025
    Show notes

This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum talk about the single most powerful force in Washington DC: the special interests.

Why is it that our political leaders so often act in opposition to the will of the voters? There is an industry of lobbyists and special interest groups that donate unlimited amounts of money (thanks Citizens United) to fund our politicians' campaigns, gain access to their offices, and influence their decision making. On today’s episode our hosts de-mystify the D.C. machine–who do our politicians REALLY work for? We’re looking at you, BlackRock.

Check out who donates to YOUR representatives at www.opensecrets.org/

Speaking of the influence of special interests, Palestinian Mahmoud Khalil has been separated from his family and jailed for protesting the war in Gaza while he was a graduate student at Columbia University. His fight is not over and he has a message for all of us, read his open letter here: inthesetimes.com/article/mahmoud-khalil-letter-from-a-palestinian-political-prisoner-in-louisiana

Can Black People Be Racist? | MiniPod Mar 14, 2025
    Show notes

Racism, Race-baiting, and Why Is It All About Race Anyway?

Our hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Tiffany cross weigh the age-old question: can Black people be racist? Well first it depends what we mean when we say “racism.”

Moreover, why is it that every time someone tries to point out structural racism online, some troll just has to accuse them of “race-baiting”? Let’s talk about it.

Government Showdown and Target Shutdown Mar 13, 2025
    Show notes

Shutdown or Shut Up: Why Won’t Dems Fall in Line? Reflecting on Bloody Sunday

This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum have a call to action: fast from Target.

Pastor Jamal Bryant has called for a fast of Target stores, a 40 day boycott that started on March 6th. The company has rolled back DEI initiatives despite being one of the largest employers of Black Americans. Our hosts check on the progress of the fast and discuss how to minimize harm.

A government shutdown is looming, funding runs out at midnight this Friday unless Congress can pass a new budget. Republicans want to pass a stop-gap measure called a “continuing resolution,” a slimmed down version of the current budget that would put off decisions on a new budget until the Fall. They need Democratic votes to get it through the Senate. Is there any reason Democrats should comply?

While the new Education Secretary Linda McMahon lays off 50% of the Department of Education’s workforce, Trump sends threatening letters to universities. Citing civil rights laws, the Trump admin says it will pull federal funding from schools that allow pro-Palestinian protests.

We’ve just passed the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, when civil rights marchers fighting for the right to vote were attacked by police while peacefully marching across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. How far have we come since then?

And of course we’ll hear from you! If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/

The Forming of the Revolution was Televised! The Opposition Gets in Formation at SOTU

This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum offer some counter programming to Trump’s “State of the Union” address. On the same days as the speech, Angela Rye along with Joy Reid and others gathered an incredible lineup of Black leaders for a 24 hour livestream, dubbing it The State of the People.

Rather than responding to the propaganda, this prolific gathering offered an alternative path forward, choosing to see this moment as an opportunity, not just a setback. Get inspired and energized, watch the full stream on NLP’s YouTube channel and at stateofthepeople.media

There was some DRAMA during Trump’s SOTU though. Rep. Al Green was escorted out after he brandished his cane and shouted at Trump, and a cohort of Democrats walked out on their own, led mainly by Black Women of the progressive and Black caucases’. We spoke with representatives on their way out, including Maxwell Frost, Ayanna Pressley, Jasmine Crockett, Maxine Waters, and more.

Finally, it looks like the Target boycott had a little bit of an effect. According to Similarweb, Target web traffic was down 1.0% to 4.7 million on Feb. 28 compared to the previous Friday's 4.8 million and traffic on the Target app was down 10.9% to 3.5 million users compared to 3.9 million the previous Friday. The hosts discuss…

    Who’s Racist Jesse Watters?? | MiniPod Feb 28, 2025

Fox News host Jesse Watters accused Atlanta Pastor Jamal Bryant of racism for statements the pastor made about Black Trump supporters. Specifically, Black Trump supporters who threatened the pastor’s life (or at least his bodily freedom) at a White House event. NLP hosts Angela Rye, Tiffany Cross, and Andrew Gillum clap back.

Why Cuts to Medicaid & SNAP Will DEVASTATE America. Should Dems Skip the SOTU?

This week hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum brace for the long night (shout out GOT fans).

House Republicans passed a budget framework that includes massive cuts to Medicaid and SNAP benefits, plus huge tax breaks for the wealthy. Trump is literally going to war with the poor. It’s not hyperbole to say that millions of American lives are at risk.

Meanwhile, big shakeups at MSNBC mean there is even less representation in cable news these days. We grieve the loss of Joy Reid’s show, The ReidOut, and ask: would boycotting cable news be more harmful or helpful?

Should Democrats show up to Trump’s State of the Union address? With Trump dismantling our democracy and the GOP pushing for devastating cuts to the social safety net, attending this yearly ceremony may just be a bad look.

Lastly: WE WON!! Our first NAACP Image Award is in the bag, we won in the outstanding news & information podcast category. It’s all thanks to you, our NLP fam. THANK YOU!!!
