10: The Ninth Gate, Euro puddings, the devil’s business; and the pleasures of story structure Sep 04, 2023

The Ninth Gate (1999), directed by Roman Polanski, is described as a horror-thriller (despite not being scary nor exciting). It has three spooky tomes though and a great game of spot the difference. Depp stars as the laconic book detective embroiled in the satanic silliness, with Emmanuelle Seigner as the femme fatale.
Joe & Adam discuss the film, story structure and the great soundtrack… and as an end of episode treat, some other films they've seen recently, including Oppenheimer and Memento.

A scorched Earth with nothing to live for - no, not reflections on our modern lives, but a look back at the 2002 dragon flick Reign of Fire, directed by Rob Bowman. Joe & Adam reflect on the proto-serious Christian Bale and scenery-chewing Matthew McConaughey (but have most time for the diamond in the rough Gerard Butler). They also dig into the post-apocalyptic genre, and Joe gets his size-14s stuck in an I-am-Legend shaped hole.

Released in 2008, Sam Mendes directs this adaptation of the Richard Yates novel. It stars the truly Titanic pairing of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, but how did this flick fall
into the forgot you forgot it pile? In this episode, Joe & Adam discover why film criticism is pointless, why DiCaprio is best in exactly this kind of role, and that Oscar nominations really do have an impact on your box office.

Joe and Adam apply some heavy, heavy chat to the lightweight 2011 flick written and directed by George Nolfi. Based on a Philip K Dick short story… that features a mind-reading/talking dog. The film has angels in it though, and according to egg-brained Joe is a repudiation of communism. Whatever else you say about this film, boy did it have a hat budget.

The Ang Lee directed Life of Pi wowed audiences in 2012, but how does it stand up in these cynical of times… and why did it fall

2: Blades of Glory, Funny Ferrell, and Recasting the Movie So It’s Different and Good Jul 17, 2023

‘Comedy’ Blades of Glory (of 2007 fame) is the flick we forgot we forgot for this episode. Starring Will Ferrell and Jon Heder, directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck, the story sees two chalk-and-cheese figure skaters who have to overcome their differences in order to win in the Olympics, or something. It was more fruitful recasting the film than actually dicussing its merits, so that's what we did.
