Against All Odds - Debbie Smelko Sep 11, 2019
    Show notes

Everything can change in a moment. One decision can change the course of your entire life. Debbie Smelko knows this more than most, and has made it her life's mission to share her story with anyone willing to listen. And while that story starts with tragedy, the real power of her witness is in the hope and redemption that comes after. This is an interview that everyone needs to hear and share with those they love.

See more of Debbie's story, including pictures from before the accident, video segments sharing a little more about her daily life and her annual social media post that she shares each September 17th at fumcr.com/morethansunday

Faith, Family, and Football - Drew Pearson Sep 04, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to Season 3 of More Than Sunday! We are thrilled to be back in your feed every Wednesday, bringing you insightful conversations full of the stories, themes, and questions of our faith. And seeing as we're not the only ones starting up a new season this week (football is back!), we thought it appropriate to welcome our friend Drew Pearson to the podcast. Drew was a wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys during the 1970s and early 1980s, and is widely considered one of the best to ever play the game (three trips to the Super Bowl, induction to the Cowboys Ring of Honor, and catching the first official "Hail Mary" pass, just to name a few of his accolades). He shares stories of his rise to the top of the sport, adversities he faced along the way, and how his faith was central to every step.

The Deep Metaphor - Len Wilson Jun 26, 2019
    Show notes

While the desire for the Church to grow is good and right, the methods and metrics we focus on in that process aren't always necessarily so. Len Wilson (Creative and Communications Director at St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Plano, TX) has taken to asking broad questions about how we measure the success our mission, and it's leading to some interesting answers. He outlines the importance of creativity and storytelling in the Christian life, and why the "growth" of our churches is only part of the story.

Worship As A Witness - Rev. DeAndre Johnson Jun 19, 2019
    Show notes

Jesus makes it possible for each and every person to have a personal relationship with God. If this is true, then why is it important to gather as a worshipping community? According to Rev. DeAndre Johnson, it is vitally important for faithful Christian witness. It's in the gathering that we realize that God is not only saving us, but those worshipping around us. And not only those worshipping around us, but those outside of the church as well. Worship draws us together, reminds us of who we are, and challenges us to live into the fullness of who God is calling us to be.

The Wonders Of Worship - Eric Czechowski Jun 12, 2019
    Show notes

When something happens as part of our normal routine, or has been around since before we were born, it's easy to take it for granted and not give it a second thought. The Church is not immune to this phenomenon, especially when it comes to worship. This episode (and this entire month at First United Methodist Church Richardson), we are taking a critical look at what worship is and why we do it the way we do. Our very own Eric Czechowski is well-positioned to help answer those questions, both as Director of Modern Worship here at the church, and as President/CEO of Oak Worship Strategies (a consulting group that helps churches discern how their corporate worship gatherings can richly reflect the vision and values by which they do ministry). If you've ever had a wondering thought about worship, this episode is for you.

Jesus At The Center - Ryan Hollingshead Jun 05, 2019
    Show notes

If you only know him as a player for the FC Dallas professional soccer club, then you've barely scratched the surface of what makes Ryan Hollingshead tick. His story is truly stranger than fiction. But rather than chance or fate, it was, and is, his faith in Jesus Christ that has motivated every choice. He joins us on the podcast to recount the winding road that led him to his spot on the FC Dallas roster, and how Jesus was with him - before, beside, and behind - every step of the way.

Part Of The Story - Joe Stallard May 29, 2019
    Show notes

In any organization, family, business, or church, someone new doesn't feel like they truly belong until they are part of the story. They must be welcomed in fully, and become inextricably integrated with the work and life happening there. This is an ideal that motivates Joe Stallard, both as Vice President of Human Resources for Sewell Automative, and as an active member of First United Methodist Church Richardson. Joe brings us the lessons learned in his 25 years at this family owned company, and ties them into the Church's crucial work of welcoming new people.

Our guest today, Laura Beil, knows a thing or two about telling a compelling story. She is a career journalist and the host of the massively successful podcast, Dr. Death.
