    More Than Sunday

Welcome to the More Than Sunday Podcast, where we dive deeper into the conversations that matter. In this seasonal podcast, we invite guests from our vibrant community to explore tough questions and share inspiring stories. Each episode shines a light on the important work being done to uplift those around us. Whether you’re seeking answers, inspiration, or simply a sense of community, we hope you join us for the conversation. In season 10, which we’re calling Love Served Here, we took the show on the road to chat with local restaurants and organizations to hear stories of how they’re using food to bring people together.

We're back in your feed with a special bonus episode! While preparing for Season 2, we had a captivating conversation with Bishop Michael McKee, bishop of the North Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church. He sat down with us to talk about the role joy plays in our lives, and how we might have more control over finding it than you might think. We also reveal the release date for Season 2, a few of the upcoming guests, and one other special surprise! Enjoy this bonus content, and stay tuned for new weekly episodes coming soon.

Invite and Welcome: Part 3 - Patti Otte Nov 21, 2018
    Show notes

Welcome… to the final episode of Season 1! We're going to take a short break after this episode and be back with new content in January. We've been blown away by the response to our first year as a podcast, and can't wait to get back in the studio to talk with a whole new batch of inspiring people! As for this episode, it's one you absolutely don't want to miss. We are speaking with Patti Otte, co-founder of Sweet Firefly in Richardson, TX. For the Sweet Firefly crew, ice cream may be the product, but joy is the mission. Patti shares how that mission shapes every aspect of their business (down to the intentionally squeaky front door), and how they've taken lessons in hospitality and culture from their times at Disney and Southwest Airlines and applied them to not only running a business, but creating a space where all are welcomed and loved.

Invite and Welcome: Part 2 - Rev. Raegan Gililland Nov 14, 2018
    Show notes

Home. At its best, it's where we feel safe. Where we belong. Where we find strength when the world bears down on us. But this idea isn't limited to the physical structure where we sleep; it's the kind of belonging that the church should provide as well. Whether it actually does or not falls to the people that make up the church - and may the the most important factor in whether or not someone new feels welcome. Rev. Raegan Gilliland deeply values this sense of home, and works daily to create it at Lovers Lane United Methodist Church. She joins us this week to share encouraging stories and helpful tips about creating an atmosphere of acceptance and belonging in the local church.

Invite and Welcome - Eric Czechowski and Rev. Julie Richter Nov 07, 2018
    Show notes

Being invitational and welcoming is at the heart of the Christian faith. It's the first step in sharing the good news of Jesus and offering someone new a place at the table. But more often than not, this thing that is so central to who we are as Christians does not come easy. We're shy. We don't want to offend. We want to avoid potential awkwardness and exclusion. But the call of Jesus to make disciples remains… so what do we do? This week, our hosts Eric and Julie have a practical conversation about the why, how, and who of Christian hospitality and the difference it can make in people's lives.

Humility - Dr. Hugo Magallanes Oct 24, 2018
    Show notes

What should a church's relationship look like with the community in which it sits? When, and how, should we look to current culture to inform how we're carrying out our mission? And does humility play a role in any of it? These are important questions to answer when trying to figure out how to be the church that your community needs. Dr. Hugo Magallanes thinks so too; he's spent the past decade helping current and future pastors navigate these questions so they might help local churches better love their neighbors. He is currently the Associate Professor of Christianity and Cultures at Perkins School of Theology (Southern Methodist University), and is joining us today to share wisdom and experience around how the church can best relate to society at large.

Inclusion and Teamwork - Katie Patterson Oct 17, 2018
    Show notes

Diversity is a strength to any community or organization. Different backgrounds and points of view lead to a fuller picture of who we are and what we're seeking to achieve. But if we stop at simply acknowledging diversity, we're missing the gifts and opportunities that come with true inclusion and teamwork. Katie Patterson knows this all too well, and has made it her mission to break down the barriers that divide us through her work at the Richardson Adult Literacy Center. They are tackling these barriers in a literal way, teaching English to those in the Richardson community who don't speak the language. In providing a chance to communicate more effectively, they are offering inclusion and teamwork to members of the community who are desperately seeking it. Katie speaks from her experience in, and hope for the Richardson community, lending lessons that reach far beyond its city limits.

    Compassion - Cindy Shafer Oct 10, 2018
    Show notes

If your church ceased to exist tomorrow, would your community notice? That is the question we're seeking to answer over the next four weeks of the podcast. How do we as a church become so integral to the life of the community we are in that no one could imagine the city without it? How do we care for our neighbors the way that Christ calls us to - not just a donation every now and then, but loving our neighbors as ourselves? Cindy Shafer has set out to answer a very similar question. She is the CEO of Network of Community Ministries, a non-profit that seeks to care, coach, and empower our neighbors in need as they seek an improved quality of life. She shares with us how her faith drives the work she does, and the difference she has seen it make in people's lives.

Head, Heart, and Hands: Part 3 of 3 - Joey Schewee Oct 03, 2018
    Show notes

In the final episode of our 3 part series on the Enneagram, we take a look at the doers. These people are action-oriented. They often rely on instinct. They experience their interior world as physical feelings. One such person, Joey Schewee, is joining us on the podcast this week to talk about this group of people - their perspectives, their challenges, and the gifts they can offer to the world. Joey has taught the Enneagram nationwide for over 10 years, giving her the experience, knowledge, and insight she brings to today's conversation.
