One of the most terrifying things in the world for young African American men is knowing that certain people can feel threatened by you, simply by existing. Black blindness is a phenomenon that makes white cops see an imaginary gun on an African American man during a routine traffic stop. Sometimes, it can go hand in hand with the Stand your Ground Law. In 2012, the Tampa Bay Times found that those who killed African Americans using the law went free 73% of the time while those who killed white people using the law went free 59% of the time.
This controversial law offers protection to people who harm or kill someone who they feel threatened by. The ambiguity of the definition of threat under this law grants so much latitude that the law can often be abused. The Stand your Ground Law sets the bar incredibly low for what constitutes as a threat and when deadly force can be used to neutralize that so-called threat, it makes for a slippery slope.
In 2012, much of America was celebrating the re-election of the nation’s first African American president but just three weeks later in Jacksonville, Florida, the murder of an unarmed African American teenager was a bloody reminder of just how far we still have to go in the battle against racism.

For a lot of students, middle school is the place for a number of big changes in their life: a new campus, new teachers and even new friends. It is also a time when a lot of teenagers try to find out who they truly are and experimenting in any direction is completely normal.
However, sadly middle school can also be a place where bullies target those who they feel are not conforming to the expected norms. The pressures of fitting in alongside a new environment can often prove to be very difficult for some teenagers and when prejudice and bigotry go unchecked, it can sometimes lead to violence.
In 2008, a school shooting occurred in Oxnard, California, and in the aftermath, the deceased victim was practically put on trial alongside her killer.

Almost every single day, children pay for the bad choices that adults make. They’re left to die in hot cars. They’re sent into foster care while their parents make their way through the prison system. They’re left in sleazy motels while their guardian tries to get their next drug fix. They’re
sexually abused or beaten by a relative supposed to care for them. Sometimes the simple proximity to bad decisions can make children vulnerable.
We all feel rage at the casual indifference in which adults drag children along in the wake of their bad decisions, and in Arlington, Texas, in 1994, a teenage girl paid the ultimate price for the stupid actions of her older brothers.

17: Aurora Chuck E. Cheese Mass Shooting Oct 14, 2019
    Show notes

Chuck E. Cheese's has long been a place where parents take their children for a good and affordable time. This simple restaurant is complemented by arcade games, amusement rides and animatronic displays. It is synonymous with family fun. But on a crisp winter night in Aurora Colorado in December of 1993, this family style restaurant was the scene of a mass shooting that highlighted just how easily a gun can rip through a workplace.

The internet provides a cloak for monsters with nefarious thoughts and ideas. It provides these seedy characters easy access to freely consume our homes, thoughts, and lives. Social media is virtually an invisible world. A place where people can choose to be whatever – or whoever – they want to be. Of course, the internet can be a fantastic place for children and teenagers to explore their interests, learn and socialise with likeminded people but behind the veil of normalcy, sexual predators can be lurking.
In 2012, the city of Van, Buren, Arkansas, was rocked by the disappearance of a teenage girl. When it was discovered that she had been chatting online with a local sex offender, it forced parents to look with new suspicion at their children’s phones and computers.

It’s said that your teenage years are the most formative years of your life. They’re the years for finding yourself. Yeah, we’re all familiar with that cheesy cliché. But then there was Devon Guzman from Easton, Pennsylvania. At just 19-years-old, Devon knew exactly who she was. Openly gay, she drove around with a rainbow flag on the bumper of her car, always attracting an unamused glance from the intolerant locals.
But in 2000, Devon found herself as the star of a tragic tale of love and betrayal among three women and a man. This volatile mix of teenage angst and jealousy would eventually lead to a brutal murder.

    14: Carlos DeLuna Sep 23, 2019
    Show notes

The death penalty. It’s easily one of the biggest debates in America. Even today. Now those who agree with the death penalty like to imagine that the state never gets it wrong. However, that’s just not the case. It is better that ten guilty people go free than one innocent person be killed for a crime he did not commit. The case of Carlos DeLuna is not a lesson in justice, but injustice. It truly lays bare America’s broken “machinery of death.” The term machinery of death comes from Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun, who spent 24 years reviewing and often upholding death sentences. He had come to the conclusion that the potential for error is just far too great in a system which is “fraught with arbitrariness, discrimination, caprice and mistake.”
And while a large majority of people believe that America has the best justice system in the world, the case of Carlos DeLuna proves that even in America, an innocent man can be executed.

The case of Shawna Forde is a bizarre and tragic tale which highlights the dangers of militia groups. She first began making headlines in 2009, when she claimed to have been targeted for a series of violent incidents in Everett, Washington. According to Forde, she was the victim of Mexican drug cartel retribution for her Minutemen activism. The Minuteman Project began in 2004, allegedly in a response to the wave of people crossing the U.S. Border from Mexico. They were an anti-immigration movement, insisting that undocumented residents were responsible for increasing crime.
However, in 2012, Forde committed a crime under the guise of the minutemen which completely overshadowed any of their earlier actions.

    12: Mick Philpott Sep 02, 2019
    Show notes

As human beings, we all have ambitions and goals. For a number of people all across the world, their life’s ambition is quite simply to have a large family. In a perfect world, babies are born into hard-working families that do their best to provide for them a loving home and a stable environment. But what about those that are seen as nothing more than a source of income?
Mick Philpott first saw his name in the headlines in 2006, when he requested a bigger council-house for his massive family. Philpott had fathered 17 children by a number of different women and to fund his family, he relied solely on state benefits. His lifestyle was something which angered a number of hard-working Britons who felt as though he was procreating solely as a means of income.
Britain had almost forgotten about the Philpott family when in 2012, tragedy struck when their house went up in flames, opening one of the most shocking criminal investigations that Derby had ever seen.

Lying south of Bega in New South Wales, Australia, is the tiny hamlet of Kalaru. In 1997, it only had around 400 residents, living among the green pastures of prime south-coast dairy country. It’s a tight-knit community where everybody knows their neighbor. There are no fancy houses, hotels or restaurants, just modest homes, a service station, and a caravan park. Surrounded by bushland and beaches, the area was extremely popular for horseback riding and swimming.
The tranquil and rural lifestyle provides locals with a sense of security, but in 1997, this sense of security was completely shattered when two local teenagers vanished while walking to a party and as it turned out, the innocent act of being in the wrong place at the wrong time had deadly consequences
