The intellectually disabled are among the most vulnerable within the community. While many can lead normal lives, including holding down a job and raising a family, there are a number that sadly suffer in silence and need that extra bit of help. In an ideal world, those that struggle mentally would have a mentor or a guardian that have their very best interests at heart and assist them with their life decisions.
However, sadly for 24-year-old Vera Jo Reigle from Findlay, Ohio, she was truly alone in the world and those who appeared closest to her, were – in reality – her number one enemy. Poverty, drugs, neglect and abuse made up the four walls of a literal house of horrors for Vera Jo and in 2011, her disturbing death reverberated in a community which prides itself on being caring and compassionate and led to a discussion about what could be done to better identify and assist those who may be unwilling or unable to ask for help.

Redlands is a tranquil city in San Bernardino County, California. It’s known for its gracious Victorian homes, the Lincoln Shrine, acres of orange groves and low crime rate. While many surrounding cities are rife with gang violence and random street violence, residents of this bucolic city like to think that they inhabit an oasis. But throughout the 1990s, a wave of youth violence rocked the city and shattered their idyll. The violence culminated with the mysterious disappearance of a 14-year-old boy.
For a parent or guardian, their child going missing is undoubtedly their worst nightmare but the outcome of this case was even more horrific than anybody could have ever fathomed.

Lancashire is a ceremonial county in North West England. It is made up of beautiful and lush countryside and charming villages. One of the most gorgeous villages in the area is arguably Helmshore. This quaint village has the River Ogden running through it and the majority of the homes are brick faced and nostalgically attractive.
In 2016, however, a jealous obsession was brewing in Helmshore, one which would culminate with the brutal murder of a wealthy businesswoman.

    27: Goleta Postal Murders Dec 23, 2019
    Show notes

Mass shootings have become such a part of American life that a simple word can evoke them from the nation’s collective memory. For example, Columbine, Sandy Hook and Luby’s. One thing you’ll notice about almost all mass shootings is that the perpetrator is male. Female mass shooters are rare. Female mass shooters that target their place of employment are even rarer.
But in Goleta, California, in 2006, an ex-postal worker was an exception to the rule. It was the nation’s deadliest workplace shooting perpetrated by a woman and the nation’s bloodiest shooting at a postal installation in almost 20 years.

During the 1960s, hitchhiking was a common occurrence in Britain as well as across the United States and Canada. It was seen as an easy and cheap way to get from place to place and maybe meet some new friends along the way. While the Moors Murders happened between 1963 and 1965, many Britons felt as though this was a terrible one-off and it didn’t deter them from hitchhiking. While nowadays, a child hitchhiking to and from school would warrant a call to child protection services, back in the 1960s, some children did.
But in 1968 in Surrey, England, one such boy never came home, paving the way to one of the most exhaustive criminal investigations that Britain had ever seen and uncovering one of the most prolific pedophiles in British history.

Bermuda is a British dependent territory in the North Atlantic Ocean, just around 590 miles off the United States Coast. It isn’t a third-world country or a struggling developing nation. It has the one of the highest per capital incomes in the world. In 1996, it had a population of around 60,000 and prided itself on its low crime rate, white sandy beaches and golf courses. Because of this, Bermuda was a widely popular and trouble-free resort, especially popular among Americans. On average, half a million people visit Bermuda yearly. Bermuda was also home to a number of expatriates, many of whom come from British Commonwealth countries and they are attracted to the island because it is steeped in British traditions.
With such a small population and low crime rate, island news seldom ventured beyond local newspapers or travel news. That was, at least, until summer of 1996, when the world was rocked by the brutal murder of a young tourist and the injustice that ensued, leaving a black cloud hovering over this idyllic English colony.

Just as families across the world were settling down to celebrate Easter Sunday with their loved ones, a brutal crime scene was being discovered in Fresno, California. East Park Circle Drive was affluent neighborhood in Southern California. The half-a-million-dollar homes were well-kept and their gardens well-manicured.
The murders stunned the community and highlighted the fact that violent murders were not limited to Fresno’s Skid Row Areas. It was a bloody reminder that even in your own expensive home in a safe and quiet neighborhood, you could become a victim.

Colchester is a town in the county of Essex. It is known for being a market town and holds one of the most popular markets in North Essex. In 2014, the small town was rocked by two extremely brutal murders and the investigation to catch the killer was one of the biggest carried out by Essex Police. The town was held on edge as the spectre of a serial killer loomed over. Sales of stab proof vests rocketed while people refused to go anywhere alone out of fear they would become the next target.
The community and media alike had conjured up the killer as a Yorkshire Ripper or Ted Bundy type, but nobody could have possibly predicted who the killer would turn out to be.

    22: Garrett Phillips Nov 18, 2019
    Show notes

Potsdam is a small college town in New York of around 9,400 residents. It is located around 20 miles from the Canadian border and has an active downtown strip from the 1950s which morphs into the usually combination of strip malls and chain stores. It is predominantly white. In 2010, it was almost 90% white and less than 3% black. On the 24th of October, 2011, a young boy lay dead on his apartment floor as Potsdam village police embarked on an investigation into his slaying. But did that investigation focus solely on one man before other avenues of investigation were adequately pursed?
Long before fingerprints or DNA had even been analysed, Potsdam Village Police zoned in on one man in particular and with an overzealous prosecutor forsaking justice in the name of keeping her campaign promise, tunnel vision took over.
Tunnel vision can set in when a horrific crime takes place and there is tremendous public pressure to find the killer. People can often be hard-wired to find support for their conclusions even when this support does not exist and ignore information that challenges their conclusion. The presumption of innocence is a cornerstone of justice and when tunnel vision takes over, the wheels of justice move even slower.
The case of Garrett Philips had the elements of a classic whodunit, and according to who you ask, it also had the elements of a race-based prosecution.

In the grim lifestyles of homeless youths, instant and transitionary friendships are as routine as day and night. In the late 1980s in Sydney, New South Wales, a group of transient youngsters drifted in and out of each other’s lives just as easily as they drifted around Sydney’s streets and the city’s rail system. Studies have indicated that a common characteristic of young violent offenders is the alienation from families and often from the community as a whole.
The displaced youngsters were all well-known to police but in 1988, they became well-known to the world after committing one of the most vicious crimes in Australian history.
