Would homeschooling be a good option for your family? Durenda Wilson: 229 Mar 02, 2021
    Show notes

Are you wondering if homeschooling would be best for your family? Today I have mom of 8, author, and homeschooling mom Durenda Wilson on the show. She shared with us how she became an author and how that process looked like for her to write a book. She mentioned that she was hesitant to write a book but after several people nudging her to do it she realized that her gifting is writing. Durenda shares with us how homeschooling is different from public school and that home life is a great representation of the real life. Also, how homeschooling allows for kids to move more, get outside and be able to have order the way it fits your family the best. She found that when her boys started to provoke their sisters she knew they needed to blow off physical energy that they wouldn't be able to do in a public school setting. She also shares with us about going at a slower pace and how that can be beneficial and that we don't learn very well under stress. Lastly, we talk about curriculum, and how everyone wants that's golden egg that will turn their child into a prodigy or get into college, and just doesn't exist. Also, that you have to think about the curriculum for the parent as well as for the child. Hear what she has to say about this topic and more on the podcast. Are you living a life too small for you? : Amber Sandberg: 228 Feb 23, 2021
    Show notes

Have you ever wondered if you are living your life to your fullest potential? Do you ever feel like you are playing too small? You see people out there doing big things and you know you have it in you to do something but you feel too scared? Today I am going to talk to you guys about figuring out your "second act"! Sometimes it's easy to over look what your talents are, and it can leave you feeling like you don't have anything special to offer. But if you can think about the things other people compliment you on or ask for your help with that will give you some insight to what you may be good at. It's so much easier for others to see our talents then it is for us to really see them. Also 2020 was challenging for most of us and you might feel like your progress got stalled or maybe you didn't even begin what you were hoping to start, maybe you feel like you even went backwards but I wanted to encourage you to think differently! What if we weren't "starting over", what if we were just picking back up where we left off.... wouldn't that have a different feeling to think that way? What if we could just start saying "let's just meet ourselves where were at, right now." Hear what I have to say about this topic and more on the podcast. If you enjoyed this episode make sure to check out my episodes that I did on my weight loss journey. Click HERE I have something exciting to share with you.... Why setting boundaries are important: Whitney Caves: 227 Feb 16, 2021
    Show notes

Are you a people pleaser and feel like you just can't say "no"? Today we Whitney Caves, a licensed professional counselor on the show to talk about, people pleasing, saying "no" and setting boundaries. Whitney shares with us that she feels like it can be destructive when we try to do everything and always say "yes". We talked about when we actually say "no" to opportunities even if they are good opportunities it leaves space for us to say "yes" for even better opportunities. I like how she mentioned that when we take on too much it can start to feel like an obligation. We know that feeling, we might be saying "yes" but our gut is saying no but we don't want to let someone down or come off rude and so it's important to know we don't have to please everyone and quite frankly we can't please everyone! One topic that stood out to me are boundaries and why they are not wrong, bad or mean and that they actually protect the people and things that matter to us the most. Hear what she says about this topic and more on the podcast. If you enjoyed this episode make sure to check out this episode with Emily Ley where we talk about boundaries regarding pre-teen and teenage girls, click HERE Who wants Beautycounter samples? Raising a rebellious teen in a Christian home: Ginger Hubbard: 226 Feb 09, 2021
    Show notes

Are you having a hard time raising your teen? Today we have Ginger Hubbard back on the show to share with us her journey of being a rebellious teen to becoming a Christian at 18. If you listened to Ginger's last episode 148 you know that Ginger is a Christian author and speaker so to hear she was a rebellious teen was quite surprising. So when she shared her story how her parents became Christians when she was 18 it truly changed her life drastically. Starting at the beginning of her senior year she decided to move out because she didn't want to follow the new rules that her parents were putting in place and that was just the beginning. Instead of her parents shutting her out they kept encouraging her to come back home and kept sharing their faith with her. Eventually after some major decisions she made in her life that she came to regret she decided to come back home. One story that stood out to me is when her dad came into her room and said "little girl I need to ask you for your forgiveness, I have been a failure as a father. I have tried to win your love by giving you everything you ever wanted but I have left out the most important thing and that is Jesus Christ and she said it was such a defining moment for her." Hear what she says about this topic and more on the podcast. If you enjoyed this episode make sure to check out the other episode I did with Ginger, click HERE Who wants Beautycounter samples? Have you been struggling with maintaining your friendships during the pandemic? Today we have Jennifer Thompson back on the show to share with us how life has been during the pandemic regarding friendships. As we were talking about this topic she shared with us that before COVID-19 her she always enjoyed her friends from out of state coming to visit at her house a few times a month and that it has been hard to no longer connect in that way. She is finding it has been hard to not be connected as she used to be to those friends! Jennifer did mention that a few positive things have come from all of this and one of those things is that she has learned to slow down and not rush from here to there and not only has she really enjoyed it but so has her youngest child. Also, she has learned to create more space to be more present and to not feel guilty over it. One topic that Jennifer mentioned when it comes to friends that she tries really hard to not put a lot of expectations on others and to give them grace. Managing loneliness series: Finding Community: Lindsay Young: 224 Jan 26, 2021
    Show notes

Has it been hard for you to build community during lockdown? Today we have Lindsay Young back on the show today to talk about building a community during a pandemic. Lindsay shares with us what it's like to move and cultivating a community before lockdown and how she would of done somethings differently if she had known what was coming. We talked about how if she would of known that 9 months after moving that there would of been a pandemic that she would of focused less on work and more on building friendships and creating a community for when times were tough. Lindsay shared with us that when reaching out to friends it's really good to ask specific questions, vs. just saying "how are you?", to ask "how can I pray for you?" that way it let's your friends know that you really care about their answer and that you are special to them. In the past Lindsay and I always talk about self care and so we touched on this topic again because it's super easy to put yourself at the bottom of the list when you are feeling lonely and sad. That to take care of yourself is super important and to create routines around the basics so that you are starting off the day the best way possible. She likes to say it takes the negotiation out of it. One topic that stood out to me is when Lindsay was sharing that it's always good to check on your strong friend, that many people feel like those friends are doing fine but they still need to know that you care. Hear what she says about this topic and more on the podcast. If you enjoyed this episode make sure to check the first two episodes of this series Mental Health with Melissa Sharpe. Managing loneliness series: Grief: Heidi McLaughlin: 223 Jan 19, 2021
    Show notes

Have you been having a hard time working through grief? Today we have Heidi McLaughlin, an author, speaker and someone who has been widowed twice. Heidi shares with us how this past year has looked like for her and how she learned that she really needed human connection and what she did to connect with others since she lives on her own. One of the reasons I wanted to have her on is because she wrote a book called Fresh Joy and I just love her attitude on life. So even if you haven't lost someone this past year, maybe you are grieving the life you had prior to COVID, maybe life changed drastically for you in a way you didn't want and dealing with that grief. Heidi talks about how she worked through her grief and how it was hard and painful but she knew she wanted to be joyful again. She also realized that she needed not only grief counseling but needed to go to trauma counseling and how that made such a huge difference in her life. Lastly, she mentioned that she learned she had to ask for help, and not to wait for people to connect with her that if she wanted to feel connected she took it upon herself to reach out. One topic that stood out to me is when she told us that peace is the foundation of finding joy. Hear what she says about this topic and more on the podcast. If you enjoyed this episode make sure to check the first episode of this series on Mental Health with Melissa Sharpe. Click HERE to listen.
