Mom Can’t Cook! A DCOM Podcast

Join Luke Westaway and Andy Farrant as they talk about cinema’s greatest achievement: Disney Channel Original Movies. From X-TREME rollerblading, to Mermen, to homicidal smart homes, there’s something for everyone in these brilliant, baffling films. Also, usually the mom character in the film is unable to cook, and this is considered richly comic. Hence the name.

    Mouse Hunt Jan 19, 2026
    Show notes

What if Home Alone starred a mouse instead of Kevin McCallister, and what if the Wet Bandits legally owned the house he was murdering them in? These are the questions that only Mouse Hunt is brave enough to ask.

When brothers Ernie and Lars Smuntz inherit a dilapidated old mansion from their father, their disappointment turns to excitement when they realise that it is a lost architectural masterpiece that could earn them millions of dollars. Unfortunately for them however, the house is now inhabited by one super intelligent, pitiless rodent who will stop at nothing to make sure these men's skeletons are pulverised, their bodies set on fire and any other pets they acquire are killed. Can Ernie and Lars best this beast and sell the missing LaRue mansion? Is the mouse justified in its roaring rampage of revenge? And is string cheese just one long piece of cheese tied up in a ball? Listen and find out!

Haul Out the Holly Dec 22, 2025
    Show notes

After this year's Halloween special on Haul Out the Halloween, we realised that we'd already ruined the year, so why not do Haul Out the Holly for our Christmas show? It's not like it could get any worse.

Friends, how wrong we were. Haul Out the Holly is the first of three Haul Out movies, and this one shows us how Emily Melrose (Lacey Chabert) came to Evergreen Lane in the first place. How did she end up with a 2.6 million dollar house in suburban Utah? How did she become obssessed with the holidays? And how did she end up in a romantic relationship with Jared, a man who can only become aroused by HOA regulations? The answers may surprise you! Because they are sinister and insane.

If you crave bonus episodes of Mom Can't Cook!, monthly livestream watchalongs, or a shoutout at the end of the show, remember to check out our Patreon at Patreon.com/extrahelpings.

If you've watched Haul Out the Holly and have your own thoughts, email them to us at momcantcookpod@gmail.com for a chance to have them read out on the show.

A Very Jonas Christmas Movie Dec 08, 2025
    Show notes

Are the Jonas Brothers real? That's the question at the centre of 2025's Disney+ original movie 'A Very Jonas Christmas Movie', which is either grimly cynical xmas fluff, or a biting comedy about siblings raised in the spotlight that lays bare the personal and professional failings of each Jonas Brother. It's very hard to tell.

That said, we're trying our best to pin down this quantum-state Christmas movie, in which Joe, Nick and Kevin Jonas are thrust into a madcap chase across Europe in a bid to be home for the 25th. The only thing we do know is that if the authorities ever catch Santa, he's going to jail for a long time. They probably won't catch him though, not when he has the power to detonate any vehicle with his mind.

Josh Townsend is having a bad week. His parents have moved him to New Mexico for his fathers' work, his new hometown is overrun with both buffalo and bicycle knaves, and to make things worse, he has to get a job as a fence repairman so the buffalo don't escape and murder one specific woman.

But before long, Josh's initially fraught relationship with the local Navajo people and Buffalo steward John Blackhorse starts to thaw, and Josh realises that he must go on a vision quest, speaking to a glowing hawk, and challenge the bicycle knaves to a high stakes bike race for 11 million acres of Navajo land. Can Josh secure the future of the land and the buffalo? Can he even do that, considering the land isn't his in the first place? And is Josh's dad sexually attracted to the sky? Listen and find out!

Haul Out the Halloween Oct 27, 2025
    Show notes

If you were making a film and one of your characters was a petulant manbaby who was obsessed with rules, spent half of the film in a costume store pretending to be Gandalf and could only become aroused by enforcing the rules of the local homeowners' association, you'd imagine that character would be the villain, right?

Well, welcome to the Hallmark Channel's Haul Out the Halloween, where not only is this character, Jared, not the villain, he is also the romantic lead and deuteragonist, alongside his wife Emily. Emily and Jared live on Evergreen Lane, known as the most festive street in America, on account of how they go all in on Christmas decorations every year. But while they love Christmas, Halloween is banned because Emily got scared by a scarecrow once 25 years ago, and then her grandma died of unrelated causes several weeks later. But with the arrival of new spooky neighbours, played by Marnie and Kalabar Jr. from Halloweentown, the residents of Evergreen Lane decide that it might be ok to put up some plastic pumpkins this year, and still manage to turn it into a stressful ordeal because these people can't do anything right. Anyway, listen on for one of the most baffling films we've ever watched on this podcast, and enjoy!

Girl vs. Monster Oct 13, 2025
    Show notes

It's spooky season folks, and we're hitting the ground running with 2012's Girl vs. Monster, an ooky, spooky, rip roaring romp about a girl who fights a lot of things that you could certainly describe as monsters if you were absolutely positive there would be no follow up questions.

The girl in question is Skylar, a regular teen with a medical lack of fear who in a fit of pique one Halloween decides to destroy all her parents' scientific equipment, and by extension their life's work. But unbeknownst to Skylar, it turns out her parents are actually monster hunters, and by destroying their equipment Skylar has unleashed all manner of evil spirits onto the town, as well as restored Skylar's sense of fear at the worst possible time. Will Skylar be able to conquer her fears and face the monsters? Will the Halloween party at the old McQuarry Mansion still go ahead? And does anyone want to buy some slightly used orbs? Listen and find out!

    Hatching Pete Sep 29, 2025
    Show notes

If the Disney Channel approached you and asked you to write a movie about mascots, but you didn't know anything about mascots, you would probably do one of two things:

    1) Go away and learn about mascots, then write the movie.

    2) Say "sorry, I don't know anything about mascots, I cannot write this movie".

However, there is a secret third option, and that is to write the movie anyway, despite not knowing what a mascot is, or what one does, or how people would react to it.

And friends, that's the option that we have to assume led to 2009's Hatching Pete, in which a boy named Pete inspires a basketball team, lifts the hearts of an entire town, and gets away with grand theft auto by doing normal mascotting in a normal way. But will people still love Pete when he isn't in a chicken suit? Can the Brewster Roosters finally win a game if there is a chicken breakdancing in their peripheral vision? And could Disney somehow find a way for this movie to launch the pop career of Mitchell Musso? Listen and find out!

    Principal Takes a Holiday Sep 15, 2025
    Show notes

John Scaduto has a problem. If he can get through the school term without getting in trouble, he stands to get a $10,000 check from his grandma. Unfortunately, he has already set into motion an epic prank that will maim his headmaster and earn him up to one demerit on his permanent record. But when his headmaster is incapacitated by a second, unrelated Scaduto attack, John realises that the answer to his problem is simple: hire a random drifter to pretend to be the Principal and hope against hope that he doesn't turn out to be some kind of sex criminal.

Enter Fitz, a free-spirited traveller who takes on the role of Dr Vernon Baxter, the substitute Principal, in exchange for some drumsticks and the chance to mess with the system. But before long, Fitz's methods are causing anarchy at the school, plus about 14 other plot lines that I don't really have the space to go into here. But can John reign in Fitz's anarchic spirit and bring the school back under control? Why is there a second Vernon Baxter running around? And why is there a THIRD Vernon Baxter running around?
