How do you protect and nuture the future generation of Rohingya? In this Podcast we’re delving into the struggles and traumas of Rohingya child refugees face living in the camps of Bangladesh. To do that, we’re speaking to Max Frieder, Co-founder and Co-Executive Director of Artolution. It’s a global organisation focused on public arts that’s operated in refugee camps on the Syrian – Jordanian border, Greece, France, Turkey and now Bangladesh. Frieder says art can resolve conflicts, a therapy for those facing trauma and importantly, to educate young refugees.

    S2 Ep2: Preparing for Extreme Weather Mar 07, 2018
    Show notes

How do you protect over one million Rohingya refugees during the monsoon season? It's difficult. In a few short weeks, the cyclone and monsoon seasons will hit Bangladesh bringing with them wind speeds of up to 100 kilometres and almost two metres in rainfall in some places. That's why we're exploring what's going on the ground, why this year could be deadly and how the aid agencies are preparing for a multitude of emergencies. Joining us to discuss this are Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of Sheffield, Dave Petley and WASH Officer for UNHCR, Emmett Kearney.

Have you ever wondered how a refugee community of almost two thirds of a million deals with displacement? How about what keeps them going or how they support themselves? To open the new season we're exploring these questions and speaking to some of the nearly 700,000 Rohingya refugees across camps Bangladesh. We'll see how it feels to be away from a place of instability that you called home and what you do to keep you and everyone you love, going. We also speak to Dr Neena Jain of Embolden Alliances, an organisation working with Bangladeshi partners responding to the needs of the refugees.

    S1 Ep19: Xchange Rohingya Survey 2017 Findings Dec 15, 2017
    Show notes

Episode 19 of the MOAS podcast talks to those involved in the Xchange.org Rohingya Survey 2017. We also hear from Rohingya people on what they have experienced since August 25th.

Since 25th August 2017, over half a million Rohingya refugees from Rakhine State, in northwestern Myanmar, have fled their homes for neighbouring Bangladesh.

Those who have arrived in Bangladesh describe horrific crimes committed against them and their families. These range from the burning of entire villages and raping of women and girls to the murder of infants and mass shooting of civilians.

The Xchange Rohingya Survey 2017 brings together a dedicated field team to collect data from new Rohingya settlements in Bangladesh, with the aim of documenting incidents and abuses against the Muslim minority group to better understand the dynamics of their exodus.

    S1 Ep16: The Bangladesh Camps Oct 20, 2017
    Show notes

Facing persecution and death, over half a million Rohingya have made the journey from their homes in Rakhine state in Myanmar to find safety in Bangladesh. They’ve crossed all sorts of terrain, paid for passage across the River Naf and made their way to the shores of Bangladesh. Those who made the journey now live in overcrowded and makeshift camps ridden with disease and lacking adequate, food, water and sanitation.

To find out more about life in the camps, we’re drawing on the perspectives of data analyst and GIS mapper Pablo Gallego of Xchange.org. He’ll be telling us about the kinds of things he saw, heard, smelt and felt as he surveyed the camps for the first time.
