    S2 Ep14: Humanitarianism changing Sep 25, 2018
Show notes What is humanitarianism? It’s a short-term response to alleviate people’s suffering during a crisis. From food and shelter to water and medicine, humanitarians support tens, hundreds and thousands at a time. But, humanitarianism is changing and in this podcast we’re exploring what these are, be they the challenges to how it operates or the cautionary tales of bringing new innovations and technology into the mix.

    S2 Ep13: AĦNA REFUĠJATI Sep 06, 2018
    Show notes

‘It’s a first on so many levels’. AĦNA REFUĠJATI is an ambitious Maltese opera that tells the story of a family’s emotional and physical journey fleeing their home, in search of safety in Europe. It’s one of Valletta 2018’s key pieces of performance on their calendar. We spent time with the cast and crew getting to know about the purpose of the opera and the importance of telling current stories about refugees and migration, both to Malta and to Europe. ‘This opera is about us, the Maltese, and how many people react the same way around the world to this idea of refugees. It’s about us, how we see them.’ Mario Philip Azzopardi, Artistic Director.

    S2 Ep12: Defending Human Rights Aug 29, 2018
    Show notes

Human rights allow us to work and to move freely. On the move, refugees and migrants are also entitled to rights and protections. But, what happens when these rights are violated or abused. Who is responsible for ensuring these rights and for investigating abuses? Who are Human Rights Defenders? Large international organisations or people like you or me? In this episode we’re trying to answer these questions by speaking to Christian Friis Bach, Secretary General of the Danish Refugee Council, Erin Kilbride, of Front Line Defenders and Matt Smith, co-founder and CEO of Fortify Rights.

    S2 Ep11: Raising Awareness Aug 14, 2018
    Show notes

How do you spread the word or engage people in understanding the lives of refugees and migrants? Research and report writing? It’s more than that. It’s about finding ways to create a change in people’s perceptions and to hold governments accountable for their actions and responses to migration. To explain more, we’re talking to Maria Serrano, Senior Campaigner on Migration for Amnesty International, an organisation well known for its research, advocacy and campaigning. AI has been covering major human rights violations and crises across the world for the past 50+ years.

S2 Ep10: The Human Trafficking of Rohingya Aug 01, 2018
    Show notes

Human Trafficking. It’s a huge industry generating 100s of billions of dollars each year, through the exploitation of vulnerable people seeking a better future. The Rohingya are some of its victims. A few kind words and an offer of work beyond the camps, can lead men, women and children into the dark underbelly of slave-like employment and sex work. In this podcast we’re exploring what Rohingya go through and how they’re approached.

    S2 Ep9: Rohingya Resettlement Jul 25, 2018
    Show notes

Imagine starting a new life in a country several thousand kilometres away. What about learning the language, culture or customs? Will I be accepted? These are the kinds of concerns facing refugees relocating under the UNHCR resettlement programme. For this episode we’re going to explore this mechanism and talk to resettled Rohingya communities and those calling for an increase in the program. UNHCR has resettled up to 207,000 Rohingya from the Bangladesh refugee camps, so far. In the current climate, is resettlement the answer?

    Show notes

Every Rohingya person has a story to tell, whether they’re living in a camp in Bangladesh, still trying to survive in Myanmar or living in the farthest reaches of the globe. As part of this year’s 20th anniversary of Refugee Week, we’re speaking to some of the Rohingya who make up its 3.5 million diaspora. We’ll be hearing from Mr Abul Kalam, Founder and chairperson of the Swedish Rohingya Association and one of the founding members of the European Rohingya Council. S2 Ep7: Preparing for Extreme Weather: Part Two Jun 13, 2018
    Show notes

The monsoons have arrived in Bangladesh. Humanitarian organisations are already seeing the severe effects of flooding and landslides on the Cox’s Bazar camps. In this episode we’re going back to the camps and talking to the organisations helping prepare the Rohingya for the extreme weather to come. We’ll be looking into ways to strengthen shelters and the landscape around them. We’ll also be finding out what MOAS is doing and hear from the people spreading the word about the dangers of the rainy season.

    S2 Ep6: Rohingya Repatriation Survey May 30, 2018
    Show notes

Will Rohingya refugees of the recent crisis be returning home to Myanmar any time soon? What will repatriation look like, and, most importantly, what does return mean for the Rohingya? Xchange has been investigating this in their new Repatriation Survey. Through over 1700 surveys across a dozen camps, Xchange has been trying to listen to the voices of the people repatriation will affect. They say that an overwhelming number of refugees want to go back, but not to a situation that forced them to leave in the first place. Joining us to talk about their findings is Research Analyst, Ioannis Papasilekas.

    S2 Ep5: Statelessness May 02, 2018
    Show notes

You’re not legally a citizen of the country you were born in or any for that matter. That’s Statelessness and it affects the lives and chances of over 10 million people globally. The Rohingya community make up 3.5 million of this unseen problem. We’ll be talking to Melanie Khanna, Chief of the Statelessness Section at UNHCR, Amal de Chickera Co-founder and Co-director of the Institute on Statelessness and Inclusion and Muhammed Noor, Co-founder and Managing Director of the Rohingya Project. They’ll be helping us to better understand statelessness and efforts to analyse, raise awareness and find ways to create identity through new technologies.
